That's how it was last year with the WCS. Even though the prize money was huge, Parting's win didn't feel like a big deal, because he didn't even have to play a Korean until the final. And this I think is the problem. Parting did actually get 3rd at WCS Korea, which was the harder event, but because it was only a qualifier for something bigger, it didn't matter. Creator won WCS Korea, but it just didn't feel as big as a GSL win, because the whole event felt like just a qualifier. I'm worried that this may happen to GSL now, and that a Code S championship may no longer have the same weight it used to have before.
Parting's win wasn't a big deal because WCS was terrible due to the location, crappy stream and the fact the game was imbalanced as fuck and no Korean Terran's made it as a result.
Not to mention so many of the worlds best players weren't there because it was all based on the results of one tournament.
None of those issues will come up again at Blizzcon this year.

Realistically the top 16 in the world are Koreans. OK we know this. Why should Blizzard even bother doing this at all then logically though? They already have Code S and Code B, Blizzard could have just given them money to up their prize pools and then made GSL free to watch, maybe buy out GSL so people watch, rebroadcast the games during EU and NA times and grow the brand.
Logically they wanted to grow internationally, this is the whole purpose of the tournament AT ALL. You nationalist guys are proposing this joke tournament where Koreans take all 16 spots through chicanery because they are special snowflake enough to be entitled to do so.
I do not understand those mad that EU and NA may get some spots, why don't you be mad at Blizzard for compromising Code S? If we want an international tournament that grows both scenes further (NA needs it the most) why do you let people poach our spots? It is not logical.
But y'all are right we need to wait and see how things actually go down.

are there gonna be a bunch of online tournaments that anyone can sign up for? or are they just gonna pick the pick players themselves?

Same format as what GSL has been doing.

Everyone in GM will be invited as a minimum but I think there's a slightly bigger online tournament to establish the initial Code S/A/B players.

Still wondering if GSL yearly ticket holders get compensated in some way.

There is nothing wrong with investing into foreign players. Maybe the Koreans are fine for you, but that doesnt mean that many people enjoy rooting for their local player. This is the most basic expect of sports.
It is fine that you are good with just the GSL, but that doesnt mean that you have to hate so much on what Blizzard is doing. It is logical in every respect to what a sport is.

according to Mike Morhaime's speech, GSL yearly ticket holders will have VODs and the possibility of higher Def. streams.

Yeah, but I definitely wouldn't have spent this much money only for VODs if I can get 720p for free. I'm sure GOM will come up with something though, include GSTL or something.

Actually due to the korean timezone VODs are a big deal O.o

The added value of the yearly tickets was dimished. And I doubt that holders of the light ticket will get 1080p, because what will premium/EH customers get? So it is probably basically 75$ for Vod access for 4 events, one of which not even produced in house. They have to do something about that (add GSTL or whatever) to sweeten the deal, otherwise they'll have a lot of unsatisfied customers at hand.

Will the NA and EU league be played at local friendly time or same time like the KR games? Or not announced yet?

I have to imagine NA and EU WCS will be played for NA and EU friendly times respectively.

Not announced, but I assume it'll run in the evenings. I would think it'll run mornings KR, early evening EU, late evening NA if you are in EU time.

I was thinking about all this for a while and I was also reading throughout this thread, so I want to share my thoughts.
- First and foremost, since we all kinda knew this is gonna happen, imho it completed it's goal at least for me - I will probably be watching some foreigner games here and there in this tournament, while I would not watch foreigner games at all otherwise.
- I think people are overreacting about the Korean exodus - none of the Kespa/ESF players will be playing in NA/EU versions of this. I don't think their teams would like them to move (why losing practice partners/potential GSTL/Proleague players? Also players without coaching etc) or fly them to matches constantly (assuming the matches will be played out over a course of few weeks even in Ro16 onwards, which it seems so). The only Koreans who would maybe consider playing in NA/EU versions are Koreans on foreign teams based in US/EU (Sage, Polt, Hyun(?), Sting(?), TheSTC(?) to name the strongest).
- What's super-awesome (imo) is the plan of 2 GSLs and 2 OSLs per year. This is the best part of announcement for me and it's how it always was supposed to be!
- I kinda don't like the format, I think that taking only Premier Division, have only top 8 from last season qualify for next one and then do preliminaries for all the reamining spots would make more sense. Although, it's this way probably because GSL didn't want to abandon its format.
- We can see the results of this announcement right away, CLG (one of the biggest LoL teams in NA, EG bought CLG.EU team recently) are considering adding SC2 to their lineup of games just because of this announcement, as can be seen in this tweet. (the guy is the GM for CLG)
Overall I am pretty satisfied, and i think Blizzard did a good job. Now get to the negotiations to finally get Proleague and GSTL into one big league full of awesome!

I understand why some people like to root for NA/EU players (I guess) -- some kind of relatability or nationalistic fervor.
As for me, I'd rather see the best of the best, even if that field was comprised of 95% Korean players. For me, the beauty of SC2 is about its absurd difficulty; the transcendent moments come when the best in the world bring out new highs in each other. I would much rather this event focus on skill level rather than bids from certain regions (i.e. NA).
I'm not naive, however. This is a business venture. Having foreigners compete will raise viewership numbers and make casuals interested. I'm not really interested in affirmative action starcraft. I'm into watching the best players fill me with awe. Those players aren't found in NA or EU (for the most part!).
Still looking forward to the event and will support it with dollars and eyes.
