Been a longtime reader of this place and finally found a need to jump into the discussion.
I think Blizzard has the right intentions with this announcement but I also think it was poorly executed. (The announcement being poorly executed that is and hopefully not the format.) I've looked at the chart for the qualifying global finals for this and read the official statement a few times. I don't believe it's Blizzard's intentions to harm the esports format we have today but rather to contribute to it in a meaningful way. It's not a my way or the highway, let's rock the boat thing or choosing a specific league sponsorship to run esports for that area. What they want to do is improve and streamline their own WCS tournament format and how to qualify for it.
I believe the entire purpose of this is to reward consistent play instead of handing out guaranteed seed spots to players winning tournaments. In no shape or form does it state winning or performing extremely well during one season guarantees a player a slot in the global final. It doesn't even say the top five players in the NA and EU leagues are guaranteed slots. I would include KR but who am I kidding on that one.
For all intensive purpose, someone winning the season final could theoretically have a great run for that season but completely fail to meet the required points to qualify for the global finals because they did poorly the rest of the year. In theory, nine players on KR league could qualify for the global final and the other seven slots between NA and EU because of the point system. On the other hand, I can see it will reward a consistently well playing player from KR playing on the NA and EU leagues greater than on the KR league because they have a better opportunity to make it to the finals and grab more points.
Basically this is rewarding players to perform well throughout the year by participating in tournaments whether it be in the WCS events or non-WCS events. I'm sure they'll have regulations on how the non-WCS events will be eligible to earn points and how many points they can earn based on if it's a large open tournament or an inclusive invitational.
As I was saying before, I think the entire announcement was executed poorly. It should have had more details and a huge FAQ following the announcement. That's my take on this.

Actually due to the korean timezone VODs are a big deal O.o Actually I can decide what's a big deal for me on my own. I can watch GSL live so I wouldn't spend $100 on VODs.
Yeh i didnot buy GSL ticket, for VODs, 1. i don't need it i watch live 2. i don't watch VOD in any condition, i wont live
so 100$ for VOD for mi is like 100$ for nothing, i wont money back, or GSTL HQ + T-shirt

I don't know about letting players play in which region they want, sounds to me like koreans will dominate the EU and NA tournaments :/

No they won't because A) They will have to play with lag and B) They will need to be able to afford to come to EU/NA to play the offline finals and C) They have to commit to playing in EU/NA for an entire year which is a large financial commitment/risk and a pretty defeatist attitude from a Korean than they don't think they will be good enough all year to hang with the Koreans.
Players like Polt, Sage, Daisy, Real, Violet etc.. who might live in EU/NA and join their teams will do it, but you won't see random Korean on Mvp, KT or IM playing in the NA/EU WCS from Korea because of the lag, financial barrier and huge long term commitment it requires.
We didn't see Koreans playing in the foreign qualifiers for MLG unless they were on foreign teams and this is a much, much bigger time/financial commitment than that was.
EU have no worries at all because the lag is unplayable anyway.

Is there a more detailed description of how the event will work in terms of qualifiers and stuff?
|
It's not like you have to spend money upfront. If you know you have better odds of qualifying in another region, you play in that region and then worry about expenses once you have qualified. If they were to qualify, why wouldn't a team sign them and help them out? Lag is a minor inconvenience if you're better than the field.
Tournament integration is nice and needed, but perhaps the con is every event wants Koreans for a perceived viewer bump. I just think it's beyond amateur and ridiculous to not even have a cap on how many Koreans can switch regions.
In hockey there's the KHL, that is composed of mainly Russians and people from neighboring countries. Even though Russia is a very good hockey country and many of them could play in the NHL if they wanted to leave Russia, they still have a cap on how many foreigners a team can have. And, when the NHL went into a lockout, that number was only increased by 1. And, they wouldn't allow just any NHL player to come into their league. They had to meet really high standards.
In short, there's ways to end up with a mutually beneficial thing without having to worry about a complete fuckjob of every region. They need to stick to making games and have other people handle things like these. Koreans brought up sports. You have to wonder if anyone in Blizzard has even watched sports, let alone played one.
Imagine what would happen if all of the NBA players decided to play in China. Obviously there's a number where it becomes detrimental if too many make the switch. Otherwise, why the hell would any Chinese players keep playing? They couldn't even if they wanted to. O, maybe they should just step their game up, hehehe. Maybe some people should start using some common sense.
It's a glossed over fuck job. Could take easy steps to not have one, but instead we're resorting to crossing fingers and speculating how viable it is for them to come over." Amateur hour.

does this mean GSL and OSL are the same tournament now? Code S for GSL will carry on to main OSL tournament?
|
Does it mean lesser Koreans will go "full foreigner"?
|
I don't get it. So Code A is gone and the GSL winners get their season 1 points based on that?
This takes the cake for the most vague, confusing tournament structure ever. I guess MLG will run the NA part online then have a separate thing at the event? Same with IEM? This whole thing is too confusing.

Why should Blizzard even bother doing this at all then logically though? They already have Code S and Code B, Blizzard could have just given them money to up their prize pools and then made GSL free to watch, maybe buy out GSL so people watch, rebroadcast the games during EU and NA times and grow the brand.
Logically they wanted to grow internationally, this is the whole purpose of the tournament AT ALL. You nationalist guys are proposing this joke tournament where Koreans take all 16 spots through chicanery because they are special snowflake enough to be entitled to do so.
I do not understand those mad that EU and NA may get some spots, why don't you be mad at Blizzard for compromising Code S? If we want an international tournament that grows both scenes further (NA needs it the most) why do you let people poach our spots? It is not logical.
But y'all are right we need to wait and see how things actually go down. There is nothing wrong with investing into foreign players. Maybe the Koreans are fine for you, but that doesnt mean that many people enjoy rooting for their local player. This is the most basic expect of sports. It is fine that you are good with just the GSL, but that doesnt mean that you have to hate so much on what Blizzard is doing. It is logical in every respect to what a sport is.
isnt this whole thing about encouraging more foreign player commitment and investment since being able to be "world champ" and earn lots of money does not mean moving everything to Korea. Yes Korea is the best now, but this is instead to try and change that by giving foreign players and teams a chance to legitimately catch up with a big regional outlet that is not automatically going to be dominated by 1 or 2 Koreans visiting for a day. Its designed to improve exposure for foreign players and teams I think. Whether it will work as intended over time is another question.
Its like, up until now we have had an open ramp for any unit to come and go and participate in tournaments on all grounds. Now there are destructible rocks meant to prevent Koreans drop killing foreign players/teams at the 5 minute mark and allow foreigners to realistically play and build up skills and infrastructure. Whereas now foreign teams join a game and get squashed before a unit (player) can shine because Korean macro/micro is far more developed. The rocks are meant to give them some time to practice and build up a bit of an army to defend and hopefully attack the Korean armada.
Although flying units (like polt) are not effected by rocks, few Korean teams can afford to tech up (so very poor) to afford the tier 2 flying units or flying transport units (air planes) are too pricey considering Blizzard has spammed turrets all over the place preventing flying units from crossing regularly. (polt has cloak and can sneak in early before the turret wall is complete).

Has there been any mention of who will handle production of the non-regional WCS events? Because if MLG or IEM are doing it it will probably suck with the world champion standing awkwardly while the casters pat each other on the back thanking Sundance and passing to analysis desks. I hope Blizzard doesn't do it either.

Haven't had the opportunity to read much of the finer details about this whole thing.
- Has there been any mention of any possible restriction on map pools for WCS tournaments? - Or how Blizzard are planning on approaching map pools for their seasonal finals, who might be involved with those decisions etc?
Example, are GSL / OSL / MLG / IEM / whoever else is a partner.. does each organisation/partner decide the map pools for each region/tournament? Would they have to clear it with blizzard? Or will blizzard designate a team for this themselves?
Just thinking what possible effect this could have on the map making community

What's the advantage of making pretty much OSL = GSL

On April 04 2013 19:24 nimdil wrote: What's the advantage of making pretty much OSL = GSL
Yeah why have 2 streams broadcasting the same thing? I guess it's cool that you can choose casters, but OSL stream seems to have the short end of the stick right now, less then 1000 viewers compared to over 20000, even though they have a higher resolution.
I'm not sure about this....
|
So what's the big whoop?
I'm going to TL, check for streamed events and watch them... Not sure if I care how they are called/organise/managed as long as there are some good players in the tournament...
Is there a reason I should care (as a representative of an average starcraft viewer)? Was there really a need for a press conference over THIS?
