Everything this documentary brought about artosis and tasteless is the same stories i've heard countless of times from both of them and Day9. Nothing new to see if you've watched eSports the last 3 years..

man.. these starcraft/esports documentaries always make me a little emotional. it's just so hard to find people irl to share my passion for gaming with, and to see and hear people truly passionate with something that has been a big part of my life since childhood brings me such happiness.

Anita Sarkeesian makes some very high quality content and promotes valuable discussion and calls the industry out of some of its dumber things. And people knew what they were getting when she started her project.

And this is how kickstarter works, if you don't like it or feel you didn't get what was promised, don't donate next time. Also, don't preorder video games.

Watched a bit of the documentary, didn't seem that bad but it felt like the thoughts were all over the place. He should've started with them talking about starcraft, what it is, some footage then BW -> SCII transition. He had SCII and BW videos jumbled together. He should've at least clarified that part(maybe he did later on and I didn't watch enough). Quality seemed ok but I was getting lag in the videos which made it annoying to watch. Seeing as I didn't contribute to the kickstarter project and wasn't that interested in this in the first place, I guess that explains my lack of expectations and such lol

But if you're new to it, I imagine it's very interesting indeed. I like all the behind the scene footage and beside some audio quality issues, I think it's very well done and I am looking forward to the next episode, even if I already know the story :b

Yup, they didn't clarify it further. It also bugs me sometimes that there is this ambiguous term of "Starcraft" that gets thrown around all the time and you always have to guess which one they are talking about at that moment. It makes me feel very pedantic or douchy and I know that a lot of people wish/wished to see both BW and SC2 as one big "Starcraft" thing, but it just somewhat rustles my jimmies.

What I hope people learned from this:

1. The Smash Bros doc is fucking awesome (if you're into eSport watch it!)
2. Kickstarter is (and always was) basically a "Here have some money. I hope you're motivated enough to make your vision become reality".

About the documentary itself:
It's only 1 of 4 parts. That gives me hopes. Not big major "omg it's awesome" hopes, but "maybe I will get something out of this" hopes.
The problem with part1 is that it's basically all intro. And that only the last few minutes focus on the history/beginning of Tastosis. I've heard the WCS 2005 story multiple times, but it's still awesome. If the rest of the doc is like that - awesome!
The problem is the whole "intro" stuff - it's too long and lacks focus. Random dudes (dudettes) interviewed and talking random stuff.
Overall it lacks direction. No narrator. No sections "What is eSports/SC2" "Who are Tastotis" "The early beginnings".

Honestly? Just release ALL interview footage (via torrent) and I will probably get more out of this than the actual documentary. Since I dont have to deal with "cut" footage and the work of the "editor".

Anita's vids are about 100x higher quality than this. She obviously got alot more money, but it appeared to actually be reflected in the production results.

Really shitty part one. No focus at all and weird background music on almost all the time. First 20 minutes are all about how great game sc is and how great is esports. That very long introduction was very bad idea and it was very boring to watch. So far even Teamliquids "documentary" was better job than this.

If you're new to it, you have no idea WTF is going on because the story is all over the place. It's not even obvious what the film is about until maybe 20 mins in, and then you have no real clue why these two people are even important or why you should care.

Compare this to the Smash doc, where you learn in the very first scene (by literally showing you) that there are people who play the game who are so severely better than everyone else it feels like cheating. Then you learn that the game was never supposed to be competitive, but various people from different areas of the world figured out interesting things about it that nobody knew and allowed them to be better than everyone else. They then introduce you to the first mechanic found, how it worked, and how tournaments built up around it, and then introduce you to the players who used these techniques to their advantage. Then you get into these players personality and their gaming history arc. Each one of these steps teaches the audience about the game, how it grew, its scene and it's personalities.

SoS simply says "SC is hard", "SC is awesome", "I love this game so much". No mention why, no showing why, no reason to give people a sense of why this is true. If you can't show or prove this then people will not care about it. Especially people who are don't know much about the scene.

yes I agree. I think they showed clarified what starcraft they meant. The BW and SCII scenes are split. There is no one Starcraft. It's either BW or SCII. The documentary was supposed to be about SCII so I think they should've just mentioned BW early on to show SCII's predecessor and how Artosis/Tasteless got their start then move onto SCII in 10 minutes time or so and stay on SCII. Would've made it much more cohesive.

it is kind of apparent at this stage that this is a rush job that he slapped together over the last month just to appease the community. i don't think he has even started part two or been in production for the last year like he claims. it is disgusting that $40,000 was spent on him partying for two years and then producing a quarter of a documentary at the last second.

I didn't dislike the documentry but I did however expect more from it considering how long it's taken and because fans have donated money so you really want to make them proud. It is only the first part so a lot more can be seen in the future which might make it even better.
