It's easy to now say "what did you guys expect, clearly it was going to be very amateurish when you give money to 3 people who never did a documentary before" when I'm sure back then most of those people didn't think that way. I wouldn't say that it was "clearly" going to be amateurish and a disappointment. But I would say that anyone who paid money for this should have taken into account the very real possibility of this being a disappointment. But then again, most people here who are complaining the loudest probably didn't pay a dime for this documentary in the first place.

I really wish I had the time and/or energy to relentlessly bitch about a decent first part of a documentary about people that make me laugh and have had me entertained for the better part of the last 7 or so years... Or maybe not. But poor MarineKing, man, Artosis was just slaughtering him xD

So when people vote EA as the most evil company in the world, you take it with a grain of salt and remember they don't use child labor or anything else terrible like that.

During the project, Alejos claimed "I wanted to be like, Alright, well, keep them interested, show them what they paid for, be as open as possible." (relevant interview) So if he had been "show(ing) them what they paid for" people would have had an idea of the quality that was going to be coming. And based on feedback from the community, he could have gone back improved it. But given he went into silence for about 2 years except for that one fluff interview and empty updates to the community, there was not a chance for the community to give him feedback on the project. I guess all that time hanging out in Seoul with his buds Dan and Nick left little time to communicate with the people who gave him the opportunity for him to be there in the first place. Pretty big slap in the face, IMO. Its just amazing how night and day SoS and the smash doc were in terms of creation and end product (which was also mentioned previously in the thread, welcome to the discussion guys ![]() + Show Spoiler + On the subject of being more candid about where the money has been spent, Sherman seemed receptive. “Publishing a budget is not really uncommon right, we see what a conventional movie costs all the time, then it's used as a barometer for success. In this case though it's more for over all accountability. The norm is to just see what a movie costs total. But I think with kickstarter projects it would be good if a more detailed budget was published to show where money goes. Maybe not to the extent of a line item budget break down, but at least major categories such as travel, equipment, and things of that nature." Would be interested to see where that money went to, but given they took more donations privately after the kickstarter, then struck deals with Ongamers and netflix to finally get this thing finished, I doubt that breakdown would be very relevant. Also there has been no mention of the "limited edition" DVD which is owed at the very least to roughly 280 kickstarter backers. One kickstarter backer brought up a valid point in the comments too: ![]()

let get into reality, the people who pay for this kickstarter pay the guy a trip of 2 year in korea for 42 000 $ money, he was having so much fun he did not work that much on the project, this was delayed and the end product worst that any amateur would make with so much time, the fact he amateur not a excuse, the terrible sound that even a amateur can fix not a excuse either.... . that a scam and anyone who pay money for this can be angry, watch the kickstarter and everything else related to it , everything was way more quality....

Lots of unrealistic expectations here. Edit: yeah he should give some money back or provide every backer with a detailed budget plan rationalizing why the surplus should be kept. ~20k was a reasonable budget, the rest of the money should be donations given after the film is released from people who like it.

Though it did allow him to jetset for the past two years with two of his childhood friends, a once in a lifetime opportunity that any of us would jump on if we had friends like Nick and Dan. Given the delays, I don't think he was staying in Super 8s in order to be frugal with the money he raised from the community. Suites, lavish dinners to get interviews, international plane tickets, equipment to do freelance work for Machinima instead of working on your project will drain $40,000 real quick. Alejos is making his money off the private donations (which we will never know how much they took in) and his deals with Ongamers and Netflix to release this. It will be interesting to see how long he lives in Korea after the release when he is there on his own dime instead of the community's.
