Yea but was that what we got? an interview complication where the only question basically was "talk about tastosis" and just ask everyone in the scene.

But there are years of footage from the old days of SC/Tasteless/Artosis as well? Where's the history or direction? The first one looked like a glorified vblog with repeated elevator music. I hope the others are better and they actually kick up the pace and content...but...

Final verdict: If you expect something mind blowing and ground breaking, well take a walk. However if you are massive fanboy of Tastosis, then you might enjoy it.

Kudos to everyone recommending that Smash documentary, which seemed so much more like a true labor of love, and one in which you can truly feel the directors love and appreciation for the game. Hell, I dont even play Smash nor know anything about its community or its icons yet I was glued to my screen and loved the narrative and story lines that the Documentary covered. I want to say I'm disappointed in SoS, but I cant say I am. Another great example of someone exploiting the community in the name of Esports and promising big things and horribly under delivering. I knew nothing about the Smash scene or the game (never played it) but that's why the Smash doc was so good. It was riveting. You learned the history of the game, the players the scene, etc, so much so that I wanted to be *in* that scene when it was over. I fully expected SoS to have that same feel. To start in the present and quickly introduce Tastosis and why they are important, and then to flash back to the very beginning and tell each individual story in full and how they came together in the end to be so dominant. Instead we just get a bunch of interviews saying how great SC is, over and over, for the first 20 mins, and then we breeze through both of their Brood War careers in 5 mins. The music does not help matters. Nor does the editing or the interviews. The lack of any real depth here is disturbing. Any newcomer to the SC scene would have no idea WTF this was really even supposed to be about. At a certain point both these guys need to be careful as stuff like this is tarnishing their brand.

edit: The film making crew could have made MUCH more money if they released this documentary on time with great quality. It could very well define their film making career. The community would've fund another project, but I guess 40k made you guys blind.

It's fine if it is just some independent project or something that someone did in their spare time. But considering the amount of money placed into it,the advertising, and how long it took... it is wildly disappointing. Just compare to some of the other recent gaming docs. They better hit the other parts out of the park...because people seriously need to stop throwing money at these type of things and having out of world expectations without some evidence of credentials.

Because I think the most interesting part of documentaries are when you get an insight into a world you don't know much about or previously had no interest, or a passing interest at best. I'm not really too surprised that people in the Starcraft community aren't particularly pleased by it, because the main personality's in this are pretty damn well known at this point. Personally I haven't even bothered to watch it yet because I know quite a bit about Artosis, Day9 and Tasteless already. I'm more interested in what other gaming communities have to say about the documentary specifically ones that aren't really into E-sports like Dota and LoL etc, more traditional outlets like IGN and Giantbomb. Edit: 420th post blaze up yo See, this is one of the problems in my opinion. The "documentary" (I actually think a documentary shouldn't be a commercial, but let's skip that part) seems to be aiming for the complete outsider who has never even heard of eSports or Starcraft, Starcraft 2, etc. yet we can be pretty sure (I think) that the very main audience will be Starcraft 2 fans /Tastosis fans who already are familiar with the topic, and so far I think most of them got bored with shallow information that they already knew about. It's quite a dilemma to me, because so far Sons of Starcraft seems to be aiming towards a tiny percentage of the audience, the outsider, while the audience that financed this project might be somewhat disappointed. Let's not forget that this was only part 1, so I'm hopeful that the later episodes, now that we got an introduction to the topic, will go more in depth. ![]()

to all those who didnt watch it yet: please do so. OT: "He has never done anything like this before therefore you can expect it to be bad" while that may be true, it is still allowed for people to call it bad.

And also, what did people expect? It's good to be optimistic, but many of you paid lots of money to people that have never made a documentary before, and expect to get a BBC-quality documentary. Hopefully this teaches some people about why they shouldn't support Kickstarter-projects.
