The ESL just announced an Intel Extreme masters in Katowice in the south of Poland. The event will have a 82.000$ Prize-pool, which is distributed between Starcraft 2 and League of Legends. It will be hosted from 18th-20th January 2013 in the Spodek.

Here is a picture of the venue; it looks pretty sick IMHO:

Interesting, "Spodek" is pretty much one of few places in Poland where you can held big events, such as popular gigs etc. And its pretty popular, so there is possibility it will catch mainstream attention.

Looking forward not only to being in Poland for my first time, but casting in such a fantastic looking venue. Hoping we can ramp up the hype, ramp up EVERYTHING to make this the BEST IntelExtremeMasters ever! I'll be doing my bit between now and then to bring as much content as I can once the qualifiers begin.

Living in Warsaw and if I WERE to complain, I'd have to ask 'why not in Warsaw'?

But then again I am so proud it will be nearby.

And Spodek is a great place for such event. I remember 2 great concerts in there - The Offsprings and Iron Maiden. For one of these I came ... 1 month too early... Silly me.

The only things which are better in Warsaw are flight connections and the night life.
It seems I am going to Katowice again.

great news, but being Polish i need to complain.. why not in 3city (Gdansk/Sopot/Gdynia), it sounds better logistically - airport, port, trains (however renting ERGO arena would be more expensive); Sopot has best clubs in Poland, there's a sea and the most important thing - i live threre :D. Anyway count me in for the event unless it will interfere my winter exam sesion.

Im so happy, finally an IEM event that I can attend!

But to be honest, the choice of the hosting city is quite a surprise to me. I'm from Wrocław but I would bet my money on Poznań, since they have some experience with PGA, unless I'm mistaken.

edit: Kaelaris, I will hunt you for a photography!

Wikipedia lists 8k regular seats. Dunno how the scene will be setup, but I suspect that there could be even several thousand people watching. I wouldn't worry about empty places. Even if Poles won't come, the venue is like 3h from German and 1h from Czech border and I heard that especially the former country has some sc fans

Good map pool please. The community will have to start drumming for new maps to be used.. we have been on the set of maps in non-kr tourneys for a year now.

The only thing I'm afraid of is hearing polish language describing SC2 or polish commentators. I tried once to hear polish commentary but it was like raping my language

EDIT: where can I buy tickets??

The IEM events in Kiev were also standalone. But this is still a very different type of venue and we're very excited to go there.

I think the people that qualified for China should have seeds or atleast some time of advantage to qualify for this.. Make it happen!

As the official news states, there will be 2 more events this year, prior to Poland. For the next event the players & teams who qualified for China will be seeded into the final stages of the next qualification.

Well Spodek is generally used for concerts and sport big events - i.e. Volleyball World League or EuroBasket. I expect every SC2 fan in Europe to visit us.

Damn that's better than I expected! If the whole Liquid team will appear that would be even better!

There needs to be more hype for this, this could easily rival Dreamhack WCS EU if produced well.

come on, it's "just" a qualification event for IEM WC Hanover
let's hope the venue gets full and audience passionete. If so, IEM may consider organising their World Championship in Poland

Mlgs used to have small prize pools. They fixed that.

Glad Poland is getting a big event. Iem cologne was a great event, hope can keep it up.

It is the most unfair thing in the world. I've been waiting for some events in Poland:
1) I had a wedding day on the day when Blizzard Cup happened in Warsaw
2) I had to study just before the exam when the Battle of Ministry Of Win happened
3) WCG finals were two days ago and I had uncancellable plans arranged before I heard about it
4) IEM Katowice will happen just 2 weeks after I leave Poland for several months!

This is fucking unfair! My fate is a bitch and it clearly doesn't want me to visit any big e-sport events!

Mana and Nerchio to the finals! Can you imagine how crazy that place could get if one of those two makes it through to the end?

tbh, nerchio vs mana wouldn't be so awasome as if i recall well, Mana did not ever won a set vs nerchio. I would prefer nerchio vs a top tier korean

And I was so envy for DreamHack Bucharest but I guess IEM Katowice evens the score. I don't know how Ukraine, Romania and Poland ended up as the central european countries with premier events at home but I'm glad we joined this "club".

Hey guys. I intend to come to IEM in Katowice (as a spectator) and this would be my first event of this kind. Could anyone more experienced tell me, how much should I expect to pay as entry fee? Do I need to make a reservation way ahead? Do I need to arrive at the site early to have a good spot? Do you know any good, but not expensive, hotels near Spodek? Anything else, that might not be obvious for me?

Thanks in advance for assistance and see you in Katowice.

There will be no entry fee (from what i know).
Poland is cheat. You pay like 10-15zloty for a good dinner (1euro=4zl).
No reservation is needed, thousands of people can get inside and I'm quite sure it wont be full.
For a good spot you should come like 2 hours earlier.

Greetings from POL.

Thanks Chrząszcz. That is some good news you bring, some of my friends want to tag along, but they were afraid it is going to cost like 200 zl to enter.

Cheap, not cheat. We don't cheat, really.

Also it is not true that Poland is cheap - that cheap at least. Warsaw definitely is not that cheap though there is little reason to visit Warsaw on your way to Katowice considering that Katowice has an airport. Good point though to write it clearly. Maybe we should prepare some guest-friendly maps for guests from outside the country? Katowice is considered hard to navigate in even for people speaking polish.
