I did a search for season 8 lock and found no topics, and seeing as the season is coming to a close and we always make one of these I decided to make one, if this is wrong however feel free to delete this topic.
Season 8 is finally coming to a close, and it has been quite a long season I must say.
What does a season lock mean? For starters it means that you will be locked to your current league, (say you are in plat now you will not be able to advance to diamond, you can also not be demoted either). Your bonus pool will also stop growing. So if you have any plans on getting promoted before this season ends, now is the time to do it!
So to end this topic, did you make your goals this season? What are you happy with and what did you feel did not meet up to par with your standards set for this season?
If there is anything wrong with the information provided or information I left out feel free to tell me in a comment and I will edit it in.
Yay! Finally a new season. Finally a new chance to get into Grandmaster Maybe this time I'll do it (if I'm realistic I don't think I will but meeting 3 or 4 GM players in the last few days in the ladder still gives me some hope)
So this was my first full season in SCII. After finishing last season in mid bronze I worked myself up to (at one point) high platinum. I've really hit a slump lately and have fallen down in my plat division. It's been frustrating, but I tell myself to be happy with the progress I made this season.

Hope to reach Diamond in season 9.
Mid-bronze to platinum is good. You've already overcome the biggest hurdles.
The longer season has been pretty good; if not a bit disorganised. It's given me a chance to go through all my bonus pool worth a month's inactivity at least.

I started Sc2 during mid season 7 and finished 4th of Platinum, then this season im currently sitting in the top 10 of Diamond, which was my goal. Im starting to play with master from time to time in ladder so I guess that achieving Master during season 9 is an easy goal.

its probably one of the really old ones, like lost temple or something. if you go to ladder and click on current season this is what you look at.
it amuses me that there are naked collossi and the toss player decides to use them to harass.
I have not reached my goal yet (Plat), but I'm ridiculously close. I've been close several times, so it's kind of frustrating. If I don't reach Plat by season lock, though, I will definitely get there by next season, and maybe even Diamond too.

How much you play per day? 10h or?
I have an average of 6 games per day. So maybe 2 hours or so. I'm just in my last high school year, so I'm in school until 3 o'clock most of the times. So I can hardly play much more.

It's a tileset that hasn't been used in any ladder/comp 1v1 maps.
I believe Twilight Fortress is the only Blizzard map that used it? And it's not that as far as I can tell.
Also there is no notable community map with this tileset atm.

nah just dont play mindlessly, watch reps and study good builds will do you more good than just playing twice the amount without analyzing

It is very easy to get to master league, it just depends on your play style.
I've never played an rts game online before, and I've never been lower than diamond since the game released, and now I am mid master, and i didnt have to analyze replays or have high apm to do it either. I'd say one of the keys to getting master league, if you really really want it, is to play cheesy and aggressive. The longer the game goes, the more decisions you have to make, which makes playing a longer game more difficult than palying a shorter one.

people put way too much importance on what rank they finish. More often than not, finishing top 8 just means you played more than most people in your league or let their bonus pool get high so that they get the most benefit from it.
Download SC2gears and the MMR plugin, that is a far better indicator of where you rank than what rank you are in your league. For instance, I am top 25 dia on both US and EU, actually higher ranked on EU than US and my MMR is lower on EU than US and my KR server account is just about on the line to make plat and I'm actually rank 13 gold (just got promoted today after goin 5-0 in placement and being put in silver last week). Seriously, this whole "high/mid/low" X League thing is silly..... until you hit master all people need to know is "i am in X league, playing against mainly X league players" or "my MMR is xxxx"
I started playing seriously early july, and got from mid silver to top 8 diamond, for a bit. Now school started though, and 18 units and starcraft don't mix

Are you joking, it's really not that difficult. I have about 700 1v1 wins (in 2 years time, yeh i'm a slacker) and I'm mid masters, Starcraft II being the first RTS I've ever played. Just a matter of how quick you are able to learn stuff.
People put way too much emphasis on what rank one begins at and what one ends up as. It means nothing without context. For example, I started in silver league, this May, and was in masters after a month. Why did I start in silver league? Probably because I had no idea what the units were or how the game was played. I didn't play the campaign. I didn't play any practice league. I just jumped into playing my placement matches. But, if I played practice league first, I probably would have started in plat or diamond. With a BW background, there was little reason for that improvement to not happen. Context is everything.

I'm just one of those people who like to have a shiny badge at the end of the season...
im pretty happy so far, i had alot of fun this season trying to learn mech and skyterran vs protoss, not to mention i was trying to play zerg as well at the start of the season! just recently i started to play seriously and i have gotten 350 points in 4 days, im more then happy this season, i even beat a top 8 masters player twice in a row ^.^
Stuck in gold for ages, now I am finally close to top 8 gold, hope i can reach it before season lock though. Anyway congratulations to all which goal is completed.
I was ranked Gold after the game launched in 2010, but I seem to be stuck in silver, currently #1 in my division with 867 points. Just recently I seem to be able to defeat the gold player I get matched against more often that I lose to them.
I actually came back in the middle of this season (around the beginning of august) after a six month hiatus and decided to switch from Terran to Zerg. I've loved it so far. Even though I like the aesthetics of Terran more, I feel like I can grasp the mechanics of Zerg so much easier. In a month I managed to get my Zerg to a low Platinum level without getting demoted into Gold. I'm pretty proud =)
My love for Starcraft 2 has really resurfaced over the last month as well and I've closely followed the OSL and GSL as they've begun. It's really exciting!
Next season I'm considering playing Random in order to further my understanding of the game even more. If not, I'll push myself as Zerg to get into Diamond.
I came back last month and since then have played 300 or so games , more than I've played nearly overall over other seasons. :p
I got placed in Platnium and since I switched to mech in all styles for a week or two I wasn't getting very far, but then I got into the top 10 of my division, beat high golds, high platinums and high diamonds so I have no idea where my MMR is at the moment.
Hopefully I can finally get back to being close to masters, before I took a 6 month break or something and lost like all the skill I had. I was so close to masters before too >_<
Finally. My MMR will finally reset so I can start playing again.
I've been a platinum zerg player since release and I've been playing way too little. Next season, I will lose all of my 5 placement games on pupose, then work my way up from bronze or whatever using only filtersc like simple macro oriented builds, so I can mass games instead of trying to be fancy. Might even switch races around, though I will probably keep maining zerg.

It's really not. Once you get the basics down (probes and pylons) it's pretty easy to get to diamond based on macro alone, then it's mostly refining your play and becoming more consistent to get to master.
I started the game low bronze, but after i watched Day9's first newbie tuesday video and practiced the concepts i got to diamond within a week and i'd never played an RTS competitively before. (ps this was when the game first came out so diamond was the highest league and also people didn't know how to play the game as well as they do now, however my point still stands)

Thank you, I'm well aware. I have not played since season 7, which is why I'm waiting so hardcore for season 9.
I'm in Bronze and I've been winning 60-75% of my games for like 10 days, still no promotion. How many games does a guy need to keep up that winning percentage to get promoted?

Like 250+ more ladder points.. you got 953 from what i see.. and blizzard write that 1200 is"minimum" . I think your MMR is really near promotion. Just dont have now lose streak in new seson , and you will get promoted soon ™
I think I played 7 games total this season. I'm proud on improving the number of games I normally play . Plus loads of customs of course, like watching people play on that observer map I forgot the name of.

No. I was Gold Terran, switched to Zerg, dropped down to Silver and now I'm Master. But actually I don't think it's that hard. And I think it's definitly possible to do it much faster. It's just important to think what you do, and watch streams. I'm always watching Stephanos vods taking notes.

It's possible! Plat to GM in one season here.
Hardly can believe this. You would need to play like 20 games every day, and only do some pretty good cheese.
The skill difference between a low master and a grandmaster is already like the difference between bronze and platinum. And let's not forget that in between high master and grandmaster it's already hard to learn because it's mostly not the bad macro and micro that's holding you back but actual strategy and decision making which is much harder to master and usually you need some natural talent in there too.
So Plat to GM in one season is really hardly hardly possible especially with no previous rts experience.
Something strange happened this season for me. Starcraft became kinda bad to watch. Yeah, the top tournaments still delivered, but the entertainment quality of the daily / weekly cups became really poor.
So I played more. I've won 195 games this season and it payed off. After 20+ months in platinum league I've finally moved up. And now I'm diamond terran on EU :D
Finally! I was begging to have strange ideas like getting US account or going the ezmode

After seeing my own progress, I can't really squash the idea of plat to GM in 1 season. Although, it is certainly quite the accomplishment. I started playing last season and went from silver to plat, then this season I went from plat to 1400+ masters. Next season, I will be aiming for GM since the momentum is in my favor.
Now, I really did play about 12-16 games per day however there wasn't a single cheese. No pools ever before 14, and never a 14/14 build. I never went for any speedling or ling/bane busts. I would not recommend cheesing to gain rank because you will hit a brick wall much more than someone who simply got really good at macro and timings in a very short period of time.
Then again, I'm an old BW player so that probably helped out a lot.
*edit* I switched the very day KeSPA officially switched. I clung on 'till the end~

unless you are protoss then you can just 2-base your way to GM if you are good enough. With Zerg I feel is more of a defensive race. Always being macro and less cheese. There are always opportunities though to be aggressive when you see a weakness (a third not being protected or runbys) So I feel Zerg takes a lot more skill. I know i'm only Gold league but I feel i'm pretty decent and have come a long way this season. But seriously I play some tosses and terrans and I think how did you get into gold league just making mass marines?

You can cheese your way to GM with any race. There's even a guide to 6-pooling to GM in the strategy section. You can get into gold league by making mass marines because the scouting and macro in gold league is subpar. Zerg is more reactionary, but I don't think there is a good case for arguing that it is harder to play than the other races on any level. If anything, playing terran at the low level is probably the hardest.

As a Bronze (soon Silver) terran, I feel that playing TvZ and TvP at this level is not too hard, but TvT makes me pull my hair out. Those siege tanks...
I made it out of bronze this season, and have been killing most silver players recently. Im like 9 for 10 in my last games. And the one game i lost, i was acedentally playing zerg. ( i play terran) my Apm is also way up. i usually get to 120.

Diamond for 8 seasons now. At least I played 400 games this season which is decent but could have played more. Don't think I'll ever get to masters no matter what I do though. Even without time constraints I don't know if I could ever make it. I think starting RTS at 26 really limits how good you can get at it.

900 is the diamond to masters for NA based off that post, but its not an accurate post anyway. I got promoted like 2.5 weeks ago at 940 or so so your probably one or two wins away from a straight promotion, and almost certain for a promotion on your next season placement. I was almost a 600 point masters on promotion too, once your at the point your playing mostly masters it really is just a matter of maintaining. You are probably well into masters mmr.
Another season where I played a heap of 2vs2 and 3vs3 and almost no 1vs1. I want to push to masters... And a couple of seasons ago I was starting to fight against them as a diamond player. But I can never maintain my motivation for long enough.
I advanced to gold the other day which was my goal before starting school that starts today. Was planning on playing all the time but ended up playing like 10 1v1's. I'm pretty relieved. :p
While those numbers about when you generally get promoted may be true for most, they weren't for me. I started out the season as a newcomer to Starcraft, and for the most part, RTS games in general, and naturally got placed in Bronze. It really felt like I was winning a lot, to be honest. I won a total of 114 games before I got promoted while my ladder rivals played around 50. I got promoted at about 700 points, though. That's 500 points under what Blizzard says.
Now I'm #1 in my silver league, proud of a very successful season about to come to a close. I'm currently at about 930 points, and I'm still going to play a few before the season is over, so I guess I can expect a promotion next season.
Overall it's been a fun journey that I've enjoyed tremendously, and I can't wait to move up. I may only be silver, but I really haven't pushed for anything higher because I wanted a solid progression through the leagues. I do beat all my top gold and mid-high plat friends though, so that's always a good and promising feeling. So yes, season 8 was good to me.
Well, I really wanted to make diamond before my summer vacation ended (school starts tomorrow for me) but I only ended up making top 25 Plat, which is what my realistic goal was. I had planned to ladder five+ games a day everyday for my vacation but I guess I just couldn't do it. I'm satisfied, though.
I wanted to make platinum, or at least get out of gold league (not go down lol) and I did. Very satisfied with how I'm playing now, my winrates are pretty good, (not right now anymore since I'm offracing as Protoss right now before the season ends, getitng to learn the race better) so this season is probably the best that I've played so far.

How much you play per day? 10h or?
I have an average of 6 games per day. So maybe 2 hours or so. I'm just in my last high school year, so I'm in school until 3 o'clock most of the times. So I can hardly play much more.
erm... that seems hardly possible. You must be some kind of Wunderkind.
I have a friend who just got SC2, came in with BW experience (played Terran in BW) though who made it from Silver to mid masters in 2 weeks and has played out the rest of the season in masters.
That being said, it was with Protoss and I really think that with decent mechcanics and knowledge of the basic Protoss strategy (he had the mechcanics from BW and a good eapm coming in, just had to read some strats) on the NA server you should have no problem at least making diamond. My previously mentioned friend would play Terran for the hell of it because he did in BW and was not very good at it in sc2, lost a lot at Diamond but had no problem making Masters with Protoss (in a very short period of time). I am not saying Protoss is OP, what I am saying is that at the lower levels of the game, it it easier from what I have seen to progress through the ranks with them because they are easier to play than the other races (for those with less apm, less ability to multitask/scout properly, etc). Once you hit masters where you need to have solid apm and mechcanics with any race, it is not about how easy/hard the race to play because at that level they are all hard to play properly.
Ive been playing sc2 on and off for a while now, originally played zerg from bronze to top plat then quit for a couple of months. came back to play terran in my 1st season as top gold. Was hoping to get to Platinum by the end of the season but i dont think itl happen unless i get a good streak going. Hopefully mid/top plat next season!
Every season for me is like, I start of as top masters and beat GM players etc. Then after awhile I get unmotivated and slowly drop down as my bonus pool expands -.-
Anyone knows which maps will be removed and which will get added ? Thought I saw a topic about it last week but can't find it anymore, it might have been just a poll vote about which map should get removed can't remember.

Yeh it was not official blizzard maps.. , its was only players vote in poll.
such a mad season, starting in plat, midseason promotion into diamond, now im top 25 diamond consistently hovering 700 points+. Shame i can't ladder this week, I could go for a mad run into masters, but no, college...
made it to high gold again after taking a 3 month break off so i'm happy with where i am also i've been working on some of my own builds that seem to be working so i'm extremely pleased with how the results turned out and i hope to break plat/diamond soon.
Generally speaking (not always), you'll probably need to hit #1 in your division to advance. If you are in gold, you will know when you are close when you start playing top 8 plats. You'll at least need to beat a fair number of mid-plats. It can work funny. You might hit #1 in your division, then take 2 weeks off, come back, lose one game, win the next and then suddenly you're promoted.
I am 32 years old, had no RTS experience prior to spring 2011, and have played ~ 2,000 games since (recently got the 1,000 wins achievement) as a macro zerg and am #9 plat in my division.
