http://www.ign.com/ipl/all/ipl-5

The IGN Pro Leauge returns to the beautiful Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas from November 29th to December 2nd! We are proud to bring a $100,000 League of Legends tournament, a $100,000 StarCraft II tournament, the Global StarCraft II Code S Semifinals and Finals, the Global StarCraft II World Championship, and more back to Sin City for the best eSports event in history!

StarCraft II returns to the IPL5 circuit bigger and better than ever. In contrast to the past IPL tournaments, there will be no group stage as we will have 72 qualified contestants participating in a giant double elimination bracket!

Our eight Regional winners will be seeded directly into Winners’ Round 4 including, Sleep, Snute, MarineKing, TaeJa, Polt, Xigua, Crank and IPL4 defending champion aLive!

In addition, the GSL Code S Semifinals and Grand finals will take place at the event over the course of the weekend showcasing four of the top players in the world!

We’ll also have the GSL World Championship featuring Korea’s best five against the Allstars of the world to see who can prove is best in the StarCraft world!

More information can be found here! http://www.ign.com/ipl/starcraft-2/ipl-5

Looks like they're hosting GSL Season 5 Semi-Finals and Finals.

Thanks to our ongoing partnership with GSL, they will be at IPL5 to assist IPL in all our production and in addition, the GSL Code S Semifinals and Grand finals will take place at the event over the course of the weekend showcasing four of the top players in the world to close our the GSL season!

We’ll also have the GSL World Championship featuring Korea’s best five against the IPL chosen Allstars of the world to see who can prove is best in the StarCraft world!

Players will be nominated through a community poll to take place in an open bracket to determine the 2 best NA and 3 best EU players! Keep your eyes open for the community poll that will be coming within the next few weeks!

Hey everyone! Wanted to give you guys some background on the decisions we've made for this event:

Regarding the new format:

We found that people have the most interest in following the up and comers through a bracket (hence why players like Illusion and Scarlett were receiving the most attention during IPL4). This tournament system is a reflection of that. It's intended to remove group play and ensure that everyone who enters could have an awesome bracket run and a shot at the title. However, it is a new experiment for us, and we may find significant flaws. We are certainly open to criticism and suggestions moving forward.

Regarding the change in GSL Code S:

We listened to the community and found that most were upset with having the entire Round of 8 through the finals at the event. As such, we've modified the format so that there's still a significant amount of content from the GSL as we're working closer and closer with them but ensures that the players involved still have time to prepare for their opponents. As I mentioned before, anyone involved in the Code S semifinals is in no way, shape, or form forced to participate in IPL5. If they choose to withdraw to concentrate on the GSL title, more power to them!

We should have a schedule of the actual events themselves coming up soon, but we're happy to have a long lead time for this event. Also, it's our hope to announce IPL 6 in the relative near future as well.

See you at the event! ^__^

Interesting.

Let's hope the critique from TAC doesn't go unnoticed - that event honestly were quite below the standards we've come to expect from IPL.

Really nice, glad they reduced the Code S stuff to semi-finals and finals only.
And I'm also excited for the World Championship

If IPL learned from their TAC3 finals-mistakes, then I know that this will be the best tournament of the year.

Ro4 + Finals always made the most sense to me -- GSL saves a week on their calendar, and player preparation for the Final, while not 100%, isn't eliminated altogether like what would happen in an 8-player weekend.

On another note, with the currently announced IPL 5 qualifiers, there are still 14 unaccounted berths in the main event (72 - (40 + 18)).

This looks really cool !
-The ro4+ro2 of the GSL final make more sense since it has the legitimacy of the near-GSL format and can still bring interesting stories to see who advance.
- The korea vs foreigner thing looks cool. I would have argued that 2 slots out of 5 for the NA is a lot but this is definitely a show match event held in the US so it's pretty normal to have NA players. I'm sure we are gonna have a good show
-The giant double elimination bracket is something I really like and that we never see. Of course it has ups and downs but I'm really looking forward to it!
-Nice venue and nice prizepool

Let's hope for a nice production and good casters and it will be perfect

edit : oh, I didn't see the schedule conflict with WCG... I hope it will be sorted out

Last year it was a GSL vs The World type tournament thrown by GOM. I'm assuming they're doing something similar this year. Don't really know though.

It was a little unclear in the twitter post, but it's as DeathSquire36 says. It's an event hosted by GOM, where they pit koreans vs. foreigners. It is NOT WCS

Finally we get more info on when IPL5 is going to be! I like that they are having it at the end of November, this will give plenty of time for qualifiers to finish up since they removed the open bracket. I'm still iffy on their decision to remove the open bracket but we'll see how it works out.

Oh they changed the format of IPL5 it seems. From the beginning it was 40 players and here, they tell about 72 players.

Still don't agree with the GSL decision. I really feel that all of the preparation that goes into a GSL match is being ignored.

Haha, lets just be honest, the TAC finals could have been amazing, but they were lame. Sure the games were all pretty good, but I didn't feel the hype or excitement i felt from IPL 3. or GSTL

Lol good luck with that! So many events. So many internets will be needed, this could be so much chaos. 29th 30th 1st 2nd, to produce GSL Semi Finals and Final. LoL tournament. IPL5. And GSL World Champs?

AND you will need to provide the players to be able to practice? Might be a big flop.....but it might not be

If you watched at the end, there were things like players intros.

Honestly I think the event was supposed to be much better, someone just screwed up.

They could have the GSL semi finals played out on the 1st day Nov 29th and the actual finals on Dec 2nd, giving the players 3 days to prepare for the finals.

I hope they release the package ticket and hotels deals really soon.

I'm looking to get 2 VIP tickets and 5 days hotel at the Cosmo, but I don't want to wait so long that they sell out. Not that I'm expecting $250 tickets to sell out fast.

Can we get any response from IPL staff as to the time when the packages are made available?

The last IPL, the hotel packages came a few weeks after the tickets went on sale.

Many high-level players were upset with the qualification system, as there were a limited number of qualifiers, some of which ended up conficting with other major tournaments (most notably NASL3 Final/WCS Canada vs IPL American Satellite). So in response, IPL added another round to the tournament, 32 more berths, and more qualifiers to fill them (on weekdays).

They should really stop calling that the world championship. It's nothing more or less than Korea vs the world. It's a pretty inherently elitist / nationalist show with very obvious favorites.

Well, glad they scaled back the GSL a bit. I think semifinals and finals isn't too bad. Ro8 up was probably a bit much, but I'm glad that GSL and IPL responded to the community feedback.

I look forward to the community voting huk and nony and idra and white-ra and the other old stalwarts who have declined a bit in terms of skill. That said idk how many spots they're going to vote on for this open qualifier, still looking forward to it.

Bit concerned that it might be a lopsided team (eg: no terrans) just due to the qualifiers rather than invites. Also only 5? Would like to see a few more so they can properly chose snipers and such.

I think this is too much action and nothing will be great.

The GSL Semifinals + Finals are too close to each other so the players will not have enough time to prepare plus it is very likely that one or two participants will play in IPL 5, too. Another shitty finals incoming.

The Worldchampionship is a funny gimmick but no one will really concentrate on it.

Finally the main event: The qualifiers and the main event will be waaay to far from each other so there will be no breakout performances only underachieving ones.

better choice with GSL. Also, I assume it will mean tastosis coming in (for gsl), but will they be getting other outside casters or sticking primarily with their inhouse team? I don't remember what they did with IPL 4, didn't watch it. But i hope we'll be seeing outside casters.

I don't see how anyone could watch it to the end - not only did it not live up to the high expectations set by IPL 4, it was quite a bit worse than anything I've ever seen in SC2, even counting the MLG that we do not name.

Glad they scaled the GSL bit back.

If they hold the Ro4 at the start and the Finals at the end that will still allow for some prep.

EVeryone... It's a single GSL, it's not unnatural for events to have different aspects going into it once in awhile, I like the diversity. YES it will be less like the preparation GSL, but it's a single GSL and it will be fucking awesome to have so much talent at IPL5. I know I'll be attending^^

Ironic - in one day Kespa shows how closed minded and anti-competitve it intends to be in this new era, while GOM continues to work with other esports communities to provide opportunities to its players and fans to grow the scene together.

I feel sorry for the Kespa players who wont have the opportunity to be a part of what sounds like an amazing event.

Best of luck to GOM and IPL for this epic event, I couldnt be more exvited about the GOM world championship. They've listened once again and bringing back one of the events of 2011,

The KR WCG Qualifiers are still ongoing. MKP, Polt, and TaeJa all have paid trips to IPL5, but are in the Ro16 stage of WCG KR as well.

I assume that the best player from every country wont go to ipl5. WCG is the dream of many many players.

I see a problem for a korean player. Lets say MKP has qualified for WCG and GSL4 Ro4.

Yep, RO8 down to RO4 is a good compromise. Good to see GOM listening to the most important people, the viewers. Cant wait to see this, just hope its not another PVP Korean zergs and terran better pick up their game next season!

I still highly dislike hosting several tournaments at the same time, for the 10 players who is in IPL 5 and have the chance to get to Ro4, they would be forced to play more and not be as well rested as their opponent, kinda like Mvp VS MMA at Blizzcon.

Atleast I hope they make it a 4-5 day event, where the Ro4 of GSL is on the first day, and finals are on the last.

Yeah, I wonder what choice would they make? I understand WCG is pretty important for Korean players. Imagine a walkover in the GSL semifinals.

Not really a big fan of GSL semis AND finals being played over 4 days, really think it will detract from the quality of the games played in the finals, especially if one player gets there only having played one or two matchups(incredibly rare, I know, but still)

I extremely suprised that IPL has not made any effort to coordinate better, this has the potential to be so awful for some players, especially the koreans who are in IPL 5, in the running for WCG and has the chance to get to a Code S Ro4.

Seems like there's too much going on in one weekend. It seems like IPL always takes longer than they planned so some of the games late into the night might be crap. I'll just hope that things turn out differently at IPL5...

The SC2 WCG are not too sexy tbh...
The production was not good, and look at the prizepool of last year. Less than Crossfire, Special Force, Asphalt, CS, Lol...
This year SC2 was not scheduled for a long time. Very little communication...
All that suggest that WCG is not really SC2 friendly...
Last year the list of players attending was not very impressing.

not sexy anymore for viewers yes, but for players is this (still) too sexy.
Look handball, the list of teams attending at EM (European Cup) was/is always much stronger than WM (World Cup), and however WM is the dream of all handball player.

I remember back in the day (like, last year, lol!) when IPL 1 was sooooo small, just a wee little prize pool and a couple of casters. Always knew IPL would grow large, but heck, this is even bigger than expected! And it hasn't dropped off in popularity; if anything, more people watch each season!

Smart move by IGN for hosting this league, and I'll hope everything works out ('specially with that whole deal with GSL) for an enjoyable finals.

I think this indirectly confirms Stephano competing in the next season of GSL since to get to the semi Finals he only has to play 3 days.

"Players will be nominated through a community poll to take place in an open bracket to determine the 2 best NA and 3 best EU players!"

Well that's not fair now, is it. Let us vote on the best foreigners, not a quota for specific regions.

Hmmm shame on the conflict with WCG. I want to see MKP at IPL 5, so now wouldn't mind if he loses in WCG so he doesn't have to make that choice, lol.

No terrans? What about qxc, illusion, demuslim, thorzain, kas, happy, etc.....

Whew. Thank god it's only the World Cyber Games. I was worried it was the Blizzard sponsored World Championship Series. The WCG broadcast from last year was very very subpar, but the WCS has been great so far.

Hello! I just wanted to mention that we are in no way forcing players to play in both tournaments. If someone just wants to concentrate on GSL, by all means they are welcome to! There's nothing forcing them to play, and they are welcome to withdraw from IPL5 before hand if they've already qualified or something along those lines.

Yeah WCG isn't the biggest deal to crash with. That event is usually streamed in around 100p, with lag and korean casts.

I am sure more players prefer WCG than WCS. The only one reason to go to WCS is money. You you talk about dream then is WCG (without a doubt).

Why is that so funny, shouldn't skill be considered above all else when you are trying to hold a tournament with "the best five foreigners" vs "the best five koreans"? I get that it's better for the crowds if you get diversity, but one could argue that it didn't turn out too swell for TSL4. Just my opinion.

Ah, alright. My point still stands, though, I don't think it should be limited to 2 from NA and 3 from EU. Why not the other way around, or 0/5, or 5/0. It's like deciding the best five koreans with "max one player per pro team".

Well it's logic versus precedent. Decisions have already been made (that you are not objecting to) that go against your argument. So while you've made a logical point, you've made it in a context in which it's impotent.

And which Koreans have qualified for WCG 2012 (World Cyber Games)? The same weekend as IPL5

Whew. Thank god it's only the World Cyber Games. I was worried it was the Blizzard sponsored World Championship Series. The WCG broadcast from last year was very very subpar, but the WCS has been great so far.

I am sure more players prefer WCG than WCS. The only one reason to go to WCS is money. You you talk about dream then is WCG (without a doubt).

WCG used to be a big deal when there wasn't any other foreign tournaments. But it's lost almost all its prestige from back then. The qualifiers have pretty much been an afterthought to the WCS, and there was even some talk about dropping all the non-mobile games. Now it's WCG that's just another tournament and WCS that's getting the most attention/viewers.

Why is that so funny, shouldn't skill be considered above all else when you are trying to hold a tournament with "the best five foreigners" vs "the best five koreans"? I get that it's better for the crowds if you get diversity, but one could argue that it didn't turn out too swell for TSL4. Just my opinion.

edited my post, see above

Ah, alright. My point still stands, though, I don't think it should be limited to 2 from NA and 3 from EU. Why not the other way around, or 0/5, or 5/0. It's like deciding the best five koreans with "max one player per pro team".

EU arguably has the top players, but the competition is in the USA, so they probably think they need some "local" representation. Otherwise it would end up with 5 Europeans in the NA vs Korea, with no NA players at all on either side.

Agreed, WCG is a rather insignificant tournament from a SC2 perspective, while the WCS is shaping up to be a very large event with quite some hype building up for it, the regional WCS leading up to the main event are already well done ( I suppose Blizz payed a lot to get those qualifiers done all over the world with - most of the time - top notch production and good casters). Compare that to WCG with bad streams, no english coverage (are there even qualifiers outside of Asia? I'm aware there are qualifiers in Korea for this, but elsewhere?) and the whole disaster that was the mobile game only announcement, and you get a tournament that hardly anyone would miss if it were cancelled.

I was slightly disappointed when I heard this. After seeing how fun it was to compete at IPL4 and have a chance to go head to head against just about any pro, I had made a decision that I would compete too if I was able to get my silver level play up to at least Plat in time for IPL5. I hit top 8 gold last night, but... oh well.

I'll still go as a spectator

Any information on the map pool? We are getting to the point where the "ladder six" is getting to be a pretty boring map pool on its own.

On the on hand, it will be interesting to see the GSL-final in a new setting. On the other hand, it cannot not detract from the attention given to the 'main' tournament. The result will be a more cramped schedule for the tournament and more important matches not being shown. Which is a real shame. I'm really not sure the upside up weighs the downside.

errrr....No he has to win Ro32 (week 1), RO16 (week 2), RO8 (Week 3) and RO4 + finals (Week 4). So by the unlikely chance he competes and actually makes it through, it would require a full month of consistently playing well (wont happen, sorry fan boys).

I'll never like the idea of doing two tournaments at the same event. They always overshadow each other. If it was just the finals like Blizzcon last year, that would be fine since the players can still prepare, but putting too much stuff in one weekend is always a bad idea.

Anyone else find it a terrible idea to have gsl semi and final in same weekends? What I always though made GSL better then other tournament was the preparation.

IPL proves to be a competent e-sports community when they actually listen to the community, or at least have some rational people behind the program. Really stoked for the new players for IPL and the two GSL events.

If they are putting the semi's and finals as far apart as possible on the weekend I find this acceptable, much better than ro8-finals.

Hello CatsPajamas,
Is there any reason why exactly from Nov 29 to Dec 2? Didn't you know that WCG 2012 has the same weekend/date?
Why not one week earlier or later (to avoid two tournaments at same weekend)?
Dont get me wrong, I am not talking ipl5/gsl but ipl/wcg.

I think we all have enough seen how it works in the past with two tournaments on different place at same weekend like MLG & Dreamhack (two times).

I'm wondering if there is actually any SC2 events on Thursday or if its only LoL qualifiers. The website doesn't specify it.

If its only LoL, that could save me a day of hotel. Any IGN/IPL persons around that could find that out?

Oh, and the Semis and the Finals will most likely be on different days, so the semis will play out, then the competitors will have a couple of days to prepare for the finals. It's not 100% settled yet, but I'm pretty sure that's how it's going to go.

The week before is Dreamhack. The week before that is WCS. The week before that is MLG. It's unfortunate that both events land on the same weekend and we do try and accommodate as best as possible given the incredibly busy schedule of events in eSports at the moment. Hopefully fans will be able to enjoy this event as much as any weekend.

You, IPL guys, make an awesome job. IPL 3 was great, IPL 4 was, to me, a little worse but the GSTL finals were intense. I was disappointed about IPL 5 along the qualifiers and the decision to play the RO8 to finals of the GSL. You listen the community, you make great decisions and I'm sure the IPL 5 will be, through it, way better than I expected. I can't wait to see it and I'm very curious about the GSL World Championship. It's uncommon that the community and the players are considered at this point, congrats to you.

Why would they pick two guys from NA? Everyone knows that all the best foreigners are european... ;-)

Also I don't approve of the Code S decision. The finals are almost a week and a half after the semi-finals traditionally and I feel that this just throws all of that preparation to the dogs... It feels like it throws a bit of the legitimacy of that GSL season.

VIP ticket holders are the only ticket holders to be able to check-in on Thursday, November 29th.
The General Admission ticket holders will gain access to check-in and the venue beginning on Friday, November 30th.

So general admission doesn't get access on Thursday (11/29). What exactly would I be missing on Thursday?
I put the fu in fun

Two VIP tickets purchased and hotel reserved. See you all there!!!

BTW, that hotel discount is amazing!!! We're staying 5 nights for less money than we spent on 4 nights last time.

Guesses on the foreign nominees for the world vs korea faceoff?
I'm going:
America: Sheth, Major (eligible?)
Europe: Stephano, Naniwa, Nerchio

That's a whole lotta zerg... could be a weak point.

Major, Sheth are you kidding me?

Stephano,Nerchio,Thorzain,Naniwa,Sase,Kas

Read it again. They're picking two guys from NA and three from Europe.

On top of this, I would rather have Scarlett than Sheth, and possibly Illusion over Major, although Major is very good.

I do like the change from GSL round of 8 but I really feel that the best games will be produced from just having the finals there :S BUT hopefully the games are great!

Where do I go to get the room discount rate? It says it will be available shortly on the website that is listed in the OP.
That's what she said
