I was visiting Hacker News and saw this post about a guy who made a web app that automatically converts sc2 replays into youtube videos.
http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4303757
The website still kind of raw, and he's looking for feedback of what could improve. But enough to get me impressed. As I understand he's actually got sc2 running on amazon servers and got a script that automatically loads replays, records them and uploads to youtube. (I might be wrong tho) Anyway it's awesome and extremely impressive that he actually got it to work.
Personally I don't even have sc2. But I follow the pro scene on vods and streams. But often times I see people release replays of tournaments, but not videos. So I'm left with nothing. Not anymore! Worth taking a look imo. If you like it, leave the guy a suggestion on HN (there's obviously lots to be improved still).

Why is nobody talking about this?
This is amazing!
|
oh my god how did he do it
|
This is very interesting. The more content, the better. I wonder what kind of tags and description is automatically added.
Also makes it easier on people without the tools necessary to stream/record to upload vids to youtube.
|
Wow I've wanted this to be a reality FOREVER
|
o.o I considered writing this exact thing too. Love this guy for actually going and doing the work! I consider this my new way of watching replays via iPhone
|
I remember when the game just came out, some scurb said it will be a good idea to just upload replay to youtube.
Hands down to the people make this happen, but the application for this thing still very limited.

How does it work in terms of viewing....smart-cam of some sort, or one player's view?

This is what I'm wondering. What exactly do you watch?

If he made observing AI similar to "Directed" mode in Dota 2, this man deserves a medal and work place at Blizzard.
If not, it's still pretty cool.

If not, it's still pretty cool. There is something like that as part of one of the custom gametypes. Possibly the KOTH maps? Not sure how you would manage it for viewing a replay though.

Just tried using a replay of a friend. Hope all's good!

Which I suppose are the taking the info from the player camera position in the replay file (is that correct?).
Here's one example: http://app.ggreplayz.com/replays/view/4f15869f646847c0ba297ee50a653fa3
There are more example at the bottom of the main webpage. Anyone here got to upload one? How long is the queue?

Wow, that is so cool! We only need the sound now and hopefully in the future it will be a feature that switches between the two players, so there are not only recording what the one player does, but what both does.
Example: Like the Dota replay thing, where it jumps around to different players.

yes when i click to go and add a game it wont respond. !!! although i was able to view some games through the website !!
let us know when it'll be back online to add games !!
|
this would be awesome if all the pros started doing it and they all had their own channel so we could just watch whatever we wanted.. too bad they probably wouldnt want that cuz then their playstyle would be exposed to other pros... still cool though
|
wow that is impressive nice work
|
Would definitely be nice with gamesounds and an auto camera, Dota2 or LoL esque (as stated by posters above me). It's still clearly a work in progress, but what is done so far is quite nice. This could be something really great in the future.
|
Omg this is freaking amazing! :D And yeah, I wish there were game sounds in those videos, and I am sure it will be implemented soon. Great work!

....... what does this do that using fraps doesnt?

How about you go back and read the OP?
|
aww man, i was gonna do that first. gg
I remember a thread from a while back with somebody suggesting youtube support for sc2replays, that would encode videos. That idea was completely dismissed by the community. But it really ain't hard as long as you can deal with player perspectives only. It's more a question of server capacity, and last I checked, s2 cpu time was pretty damn expensive. If this gets popular the author's gotta find a good way to monetize or drown in server bills.

Hi everyone, just was made aware of this thread. First post of mine on TL - so go easy on me
First off thanks for all the nice comments.
You can find most of the answers to the questions asked her at the reddit thread here: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/x9uej/automatically_turn_your_sc2_game_replays_into_web/
This exploded way faster than I anticipated, so the queue is quite long AND the 1.5 patch that came out today is really causing me some problems. I'm working hard to try and fix it. Haven't had problems with any patches prior to 1.5 ...grr.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions to make the site better - if you could open issue in github (https://github.com/rynop/ggreplayz/issues) that would be best for me. If you don't want to make a free acct, just post something to the reddit above. thanks!
|
everyone support this guy lol, even if the camera isn't that good, it's better than nothing and as long as the production tab is open or showed often, it should be enough to learn what you want or be entertained
|
Can you elaborate on the camera - what would you do to make it better? Are you asking for some sort of camera with AI?
|
Extremely impressive, if it gets audio in the works I will def. be using this, Amazing innovation! Thanks!

DOTA 2 uses some heuristics to have the camera automatically track the action. While this is often more interesting than following the view of a single player, from what I understand of your setup it is not really that easy to implement as your program doesn't have direct access to the game world to determine where something is happening.
If you would have a list of all active units and their positions at every timestep, some AI could be designed that attempts to follow what goes on (prioritize camera-action on areas with units of both players, brief swaps to some types of buildings that have just started construction, etc...)
|
I'm not able to choose player perspectives from the list, so I can't upload my replay :[
|
Things are back and working. 1.5 patch caused a few small problems. More hardware will be online soon to convert replays. Got a friend of mine to help me out so will able to spend more time making this better. thanks for your patience on this, i know its probably annoying.

Wow! Huge props to the creator of this. I am always amazed at what passionate people can produce and Starcraft fans have really brought it to the table thispast year. I hope blizz brings back modding in some form since the release or 1.5 killed some pretty cool shit like STC and Bw voices!
