Looks to be more news on this tonight from Slasher
CBSi/GameSpot Director of eSports Benito Gonzalez and DreamHack eSports boss Frederik "ponderosa" Nyström will be on Live On Three tonight to discuss all the news regarding the new CBSi deal with TwitchTV, MLG and NASL, and the new collaboration of MLG and DreamHack. Also full previews of MLG/DreamHack, Naniwa's triumph in GSL, and MLG's Adam Apiacella hinting at HotS and BW pros being featured at MLG Anaheim.
The expansion of the CBS Interactive Games group includes the following deals:
• Partnership with TwitchTV: CBS Interactive has signed an exclusive partnership with TwitchTV, the world’s leading video game broadcasting network. Each month, TwitchTV attracts 16 million people from all over the world who tune into live gaming competitions and events. CBSi Games, which now has a total reach of 25 million users watching almost 50 million hours of live gaming video per month, will exclusively sell advertising, promotions and sponsorships for this community .
• Partnership with Major League Gaming (MLG): The world’s most prominent eSports league, Major League Gaming (MLG), has signed a partnership with CBS Interactive to be the exclusive online broadcaster of their Pro Circuit competitions, as well as for advertising representation. MLG is the world's largest competitive video game league with over 15 million hours of live video served to fans during the 2011 Pro Circuit season, nearly 2,500 hours of live gaming competition scheduled in 2012, and thousands of the world’s best players competing at MLG events annually.
Another source The Next Web. Basically CBS will be selling advertising for both TwitchTV and MLG from my understanding of the release. This can only be good as CBS is a giant media company. There is absolutely no mention of television, this release focuses on live streaming.
CBS Interactive (formerly CBS Digital Media Group) is an American company and is a division of the CBS Corporation. It is an online content network for information and entertainment. Its websites cover news, sports, entertainment, technology and business. It is headed by Jim Lanzone.
CBS Interactive coordinates with CBS Network Sales to bring together ad sales operations, as well as the Corporation's television, sports, and news groups, who will continue to be involved in program development.
On May 30, 2007, CBS Interactive acquired Last.fm for £140m (US$280m).
About CBS Interactive
With more than 250 million people visiting its properties each month, it is a top 10 Web property globally and a top 5 Web property in the U.S. in terms of unique video viewers. Its portfolio of leading brands, which include CNET, CBS.com, CBSSports.com, GameSpot, TV.com, BNET, CBS RADIO and Last.fm, span popular categories like technology, entertainment, sports, news and business.
It's quite clear that this is coming, since GameSpot has been actively covering MLG events last year and they already teamed up back to Winter Championship.
and @above: CBSi is the internet/web entertainment branch of CBS, if that's not clear enough: GameSpot is the biggest media house of CBSi, along with metacritic, gamespy, etc.

CBS is by far the largest television network in the united states. To me most of there shows are rather boring but there is no questioning the size of the network. What I dont understand still is what exactly is the point of having a partnership with the online section of CBS. MLG has about all the online exposure one can get.

Can someone explain this? What do they mean with live video gaming?
On topic, great deal and I hope that it will last.

Can someone explain to me what exactly CBSi is? I know its a network on the web or something like that, and that Gamespot belongs to CBSi, but what do they do, and what does MLG get out of it? more money? more viewers?
On April 17 2012 21:31 torm3ntin wrote: If IGN has its own league. Gamespot put their hands on the other leagues.
Makes sense. Honestly, IPL had taken me almost completely away from Gamespot, even subconciously, I was just used to typing in ign.com.
With CBSi's resources, and MLG's high production standard, hopefully this will revolutionize what we can expect from streaming media in the future: Lagless 1080p+, multiple streams, easy navigation, etc.

Scroll up like 5 posts above you... it's a pretty huge television network, the biggest in the US. And they own a ton of other stuff. It'll bring stability, money, and growth potential most likely.
This is different from an internet giant supporting MLG because CBS is a major MEDIA company in the united states. Deep pockets with endless international connections.

MLG is also still partnered with another major company IMG,
and right about now is where we twitter bomb them with "thank you for supporting Twitch, MLG and esports" seems like a good move for all parties involved. i hope everything goes well for these companies, that CBS gets a good return from MLG and MLG as well as Twitch will be growing healthily from this partnership

I think what is hapenning here is that the holding company is putting money on games to further boost their gaming division aka GameSpot. What we can expect from this is a lot of advertising from their side including all their brands and Gamespot itself.
Basically its money put into twitch and MLG for ads. I can't see any further than that at least for now.
This is a great move for all parties involved. Twitch and MLG get the advertising and behemoth sales force that only someone like CBS can provide, and CBS Interactive gets, in their own words, "s rapidly attracting the core 18-34 male demographic in greater numbers than any other medium or category,” The one part to watch out for is CBS acting as the online broadcaster for MLG. But if March Madness and Final Four is CBSi's examples of live streaming, not only do I have zero complaints, but I believe it is a step up.
The first of much exciting news, with my own to come shortly. Will once again be covering MLG NY for GameSpot with Benito and Erick, lots to watch this weekend.
lol im excited though, i wonder how long it will take to see the effects of this, would love to see some better advertising from mlg than a hotpocket and some razors
Huge step for MLG and Twitch. Now maybe we will start seeing better adverts since I am sure this partnership will expand the advertising we see on the streams. This way it may not be the same 4 adverts in a row where you are pulling your hair out going WHY!!!!
Also the adverts will hopefully be better scheduled so I can have that down time to go grab the beer and chip refresh between the games. I mean you need sometime to get a new beer between games right? Do not want to miss any action!
this might wildly upset the balance between own3d and twitch. the twitch streamers may or may not be getting a lot more money for their streaming now but then again I guess that can only be a good thing
Interesting turn of events since Slasher's been hinting at this for a while... In my opinion it was only a matter of time since Newscorp (Fox) has their own presence in this space and the advertising potential for the coveted demographic is unprecendented in this digital age. Let's see where CBS takes this going forward, I'll be quite curious as this opens up the arena to a brand new set of advertisers and events...

MLG most prominent eSports league? Really? How weird.
Shame really that European scene is not as energetic.

Just hope that MLG's stream viewer functionality (I.e. quad streams and whatnot) does not suffer in any way shape or form as a result of being broadcasted on CBSi.
absolutely HUGE news. CBSi provides something that esports has been missing. this is great news. twitch, mlg and nasl just became way more stable companies.

It will likely get better. If you watched March Madness online at all this year, you will know what I mean. They definitely know what they are doing over there.
No, SC2 will not be televised on national American...at least not yet. It's like ESPN (major sports TV and online news outlet) - they have a mixed martial arts and bass fishing, both of which are covered heavily on espn.com but rarely, rarely, actually seen on the mainstream ESPN TV channels.

But the question wasn't "will esports be on CBS TV," it was just whether CBSI is a part of / affiliated with CBS the network, which it is. The OP has also been edited to point out that there's absolutely no mention of television, so that should clear things up.

I think that biggest thing actually will be the ability to attract advertisers by being linked with CBSi. As many people who've been following the business side of esports will know, the biggest hurdle right now for streaming events has been securing enough sponsors to sell their full ad inventory. Being part of a major media house like CBSi means that they now have a foot in the door of just about anyone who wants to sell ads to the 18-34 male market.
I guess this cements MLG/IPL rivalry, with MLG now partnering with IGN's competition. Hope this doesn't affect the IPL/twitch dynamic =( Maybe an IPL or twitch rep could clarify how/if this will have any impact on other organisations?
This is huge. I remember when not long ago, guys on SotG were talking about expansion of e-sports and that SC2 will sooner or later get some kind of ESPN-like channel. So this is like the first big step to doing so.
On April 17 2012 22:45 archonOOid wrote: How will they market sc2 to the mainstream audience? As an action packed stategy game where anything can happen?
What do you mean exactly? More advertising and whatnot might bring in more viewers, but that doesn't mean it's suddenly going mainstream.
Awesome news, the partnership with twitch.tv is huge since I imagine it will help them sell advertising much easier and to a bigger market of companies.
In a simply stunning move, CBS Interactive, an online play, has at once locked in Major League Gaming and Twitch.TV as partners, taking over their ad sales, adding them to their broadcasting lineup, and more.
so what does this do with IPL & twitch relations? IGN is owned by Fox. I can't imagine IPL sticking with twitch if CBSi takes over all of twitch's ad sales.
On April 17 2012 23:40 Noocta wrote: So.. basicly there will be some MLG and NASL ads on CBI internet content ? That's a step forward, but not the big " OMG " thing I expected. :<
No, the big thing is that CBS will be selling the ad inventory of MLG and Twitch.tv, who've previously had difficulty selling all of it because the world of advertising is very much an old boy's network. This means that MLG and Twitch are going to have far more stable revenue streams and will be able to do more things with that. Those Twitch ads are also going to improve the revenue for anyone using Twitch: streamers, cups, major tournaments, shows, whatever. Overall this is allowing esports access to the marketing world it has been fighting to gain entry to for a long time.
Basically MLG and Twitch sold ALL their commercial time to CBS for 6 dollars, and CBS will sell it piecemeal for 10 dollars. This is a good thing, since before they were only able to sell 3 dollars worth of their 10 dollars of commercial time because they didn't have the connections or the strong sales infrastructure to sell advertising..
The reach of CBS Interactive is extraordinary. Example sites that they own: CNET, Giant Bomb, GameFAQS, MetaCritic, CBS News, CBS MoneyWatch, ZDNet, TechRepublic, Last.fm, CBSSports. All of these have the potential to vastly increase the audience for competitive gaming. This is a big step towards making this more mainstream.
The article Adam linked says NASL is also a part of this deal...this is really huge news, I so very hope it'll turn out beneficial for the community and the involved companies. There's plenty of things that could go wrong, but until they do so (if ever), we should be excited about this

Ah, thanks. You explained it a lot better than the article did tbh.
I can see why it's very good then. More money into the scene is always great.
MLG might keep their Manathan building flor then ! *rolleyes* Just kidding obviously. :p
meh ... saying they're partnering "with CBS" is misleading. rather, they're just partnering with a tiny online component of the CBS umbrella corporation. they're not going to be on CBS anytime soon. i remember MLG freaking out in 2009 about the Agora partnership, and 2010 about the IMG partnership ... neither of those changed the world, exactly.
it looks like CBSi is just a somewhat better way to stream content, with better advertisers, which will help with revenue, somewhat? again, not exactly earth-shattering

imo, any improvement in this area is worth mentioning, because a firm ad-base can in time become a nice backbone.
This was an advertising deal, pure and simple. It's a red herring and naive to talk about anything else.
What this means is that we'll get more ads during MLG, in variety and quantity. This is no different from Facebook or Youtube putting in more ads to increase revenue.

Honestly I'm more curious what this means for NASL. Rewind two or three months NASL prospects didn't seem so bright, but now they've really revamped how they run, finals in Toronto guaranteed to be epic, and now this partnership, season 4 looks likely.
Good news everyone! In all seriousness, this is really awesome for Twitch and MLG. I know that there isn't any mention of TV but building a relationship with big players in that industry is definitely a good start.
Am I missing something here? Is there a source that explains NASL's involvement with CBSi? CBSi's press release makes no mention of NASL and NASL's site makes no mention of CBSi. The only thing that says they are involved is a hastily added sentence in an article that is devoted entirely to talking about Twitch and MLG in relation to CBSi, not NASL.
I'm just glad that I was there when it happened. I think this is the beginning of the next step. eSport rises. Wave or bubble you asked? I hope we know the answer now.

CBS is doing the right thing, putting the gaming on-air makes no sense right now. You have to keep it in the correct medium to succeed and show numbers before you can move it to a different platform.

CBSi is the branch of CBS that would handle this sort of entertainment, as it is the online branch of CBS. It is a huge deal, as CBS brings their advertising connections and marketing both twitch and MGL. There is little that is bad about this deal.
This is pretty cool. CBSi also recently acquired Giantbomb, and is basically still giving them free reign to do all the crazy shit that they do. This partnership with twitch could mean more budget for more servers or whatever it is they need to improve the experience of watching videos there.

True but this deal says nothing about TV which is what everyone is expecting. It is; however, a clear path to Television and mainstream acceptance.
So does this mean MLG (and Twitch) will be getting decent ads, instead of crap like that Chevy "I OWN YOUR SOUND! YOU WILL LISTEN TO ME!" flash crap?
Sounds interesting. I'm wondering about all that "exclusive" wording in there - if it will mean something later. Although I guess if CBSi wanted to get real exclusive, they probably could have asked the daddy corp to just buy Twitch and MLG.

I've said this before, but it needs to live on the medium it was born on when you want it to go more mainstream. CBS is making the correct move. If they see large numbers on the CBSi side, it gives them more incentive to take a "lesser" risk in trying to throw it on a bigger stage. Also with easing into a TV medium, you need special things in place where people can understand how the competitive gaming scene works and the "Rules" and "How to Play". These are things that can be developed while they still make revenue on their advertisements.
This is a pretty big move, and I'm sure there will be competition by other networks. This was actually the exact same idea that I brought up and was shut down, but will keep pushing for some healthy competition and for eSports. FOR ESPORTS!!
Basically, better support for tournaments, streamers, and all of that. I think these guys also own GameSpot? So will that mean that coverage for eSports will be on the more mainstream gaming sites?
On April 18 2012 04:50 SovSov wrote: can someone explain what this actually means for sc2 in layman terms?
People using Twitch will get more money per add (including MLG and NASL) because CBSi will be finding there ads. So now everyone showing adds from these services get more money. So more money in the scene and CBSi get's more exposure to a certain demographic.
This is fantastic. Honestly, I got tingles reading it and it doesn't really even benefit me. Finally, something mainstream realizing there are people watching these things.
In a nutshell, CBS now owns all advertising sales for MLG and TwitchTV as it relates to MLG broadcasting on TwitchTV. For this, CBS will share ad revenue with both entities, and share in cross promotions between TwitchTV and MLG on CBS Interactive websites.
As the article states, eSports is growing, but what eSports doesn't have that CBS does is mature advertising selling infrastructure. This allows CBS to use its extensive Ad selling capabilities and networking to the benefit of eSports broadcasters and streaming sites.
Good move by Twitch and any affiliates providing Twitch with content that have signed on to the CBS deal.

Yes, and what this means is there are more people who will ultimately be supporting esports, because anyone who sells advertising through CBSi will be supporting MLG Twitch, sc2, etc.. basically it'll be easier to sell MORE advertising because CBSi has an easier sell than MLG does for itself... Edit: I think this is spectacular news!
While more money in esports is great, I wonder if this agreement will also hasten the "growing up" process. There will be less tolerance for racist/sexist/inappropriate language and other unprofessional "drama" in esports when there are larger and more mainstream sponsors in the mix. IMO, I think this is ultimately a good thing for esports to gain a more permanent niche in entertainment/society. Time will tell whether esports ever becomes truly mainstream like professional sports.
I don't think this is a "great" news. CBS Interactive may use MLG and Twitch TV for their own purposes and influence them in a way actually harmfull to us. So I think reactions here are realy over-entusiastic. Let's see how it goes though.
Why the fuk starcraft 2 is not mentioned in the article: "Twitch.tv, which streams competitive multiplayer games around the world, will provide live streams of hugely popular games like Dota 2, World of Warcraft and Call of Duty to GameSpot's audience base, with CBS selling ads around the new content."
This is quite strange... but obviously great for MLG, Twitch, and the growth of esports. CBS, the media company, is obviously a supporter of SOPA-like legislation. While MLG went dark with Reddit, Wikipedia, and others in protest of SOPA. Hopefully MLG doesn't end up getting mafia-style run by CBS now that CBS controls the advertising (large portion of MLG's revenue).

I'm sure that article was written with someone who had more experience on the advertising/broadcasting side of things than they did the game world, and just grabbed names of titles abritrarily from the Twitch.tv landing page to fill out their article.

ummm actually we should see MORE free content because twitch's ads will actually be worth something now. Advertising just became much more real for twitch.
Glad that everyone liked the TNW article. You guys should have seen what was cut from its first paragraph. I'll see if I can find a copy somewhere.

I'm really happy, because this is good for eSports as a whole, but I haven't been blown away by Gamespot... But I realize that they are completely different entities for different purposes. I'm optimistic.

They need to expain what the new guidelines are, if its the same as before or if we cant stream music anymore. The news on white ra page scares the shit outta me. He cant even stream music created for him by dj amoreux.
CBSi also put out that article hating on Gordon Hayward (NBA player) playing SC2 professionally as well. I guess that's all in the past since eSports is getting bigger amirite?

While ive forgotten about that particular article if it is like most opinon pieces than at the end it probably says in small font "the opinions presented in this article are purely those of the author and do not represent those of CBSi."

We are in the process of moving the show to a constant day of the week that won't compete with any other Shows so that Esports can be cover everyday of the week by major shows. Episode 99 went amazing with MLG Sundance. Look for episode 100 next Wednesday at 7:00pm EDT over at Twitch.tv/starcastshow

A bit off-topic here, but The starcast is an amazing show. I would watch it even if it coincides with other, so go on and pick any day. Competence is not bad!

I think if Twitch stops streamers streaming music then more streamers will move to own3d
