To maybe explain this more in depth as it's all too easy to forget not everyone knows this stuff as someone in the mapmaking scene, a team in mapmaking has many benefits. For example there is the being able to interact with your teammates and bounce ideas off of at any time. Very much like a pro player, the ability to message anyone at will and say "hey look at this mineral formation I'm trying?" or "what do you think of this natural layout?" and get a greatly varied response (as the ESV team is quite large) is huge.

Also on other things, there is things ESV does that no one else just does. I personally negotiate with tournaments for our map use (which is just more or less arguing about load screens), talk to their admins about any concerns or questions, and just generally fill the role of a general team manager (very much like Evoli for EG, just no clan wars or travel). These are things on other teams the mapmaker has to deal with as they have no one filling this role, and often leads to confusion and just not perfect scenario's to create a perfect environment to make maps.

For a perfect example with Dreamhack recently. The main admin was very interested in new maps and just maps in general and I have spent probably about 10-20 hours on Skype with him discussing stuff while my mapmakers can do their thing. Again on other teams this would be Jacky's responsibility or the mapper in question.

More then anything however, the closed off team Skype discussions is worth it alone. You can see it's effects if you look close. ESV maps tend to share similar traits ( recognize the third/fourth's? ) and often concepts form one leak over to another. You can even see the effects with teams like TPW for example, who's maps aesthetically are a level beyond everyone else's and have been ever since they teamed up.

While teams may not offer the traditional benefits a player receives like salary, benefits, travel, etc, it offers a canvas to paint your picture (make your map) onto, but the canvas responds back and lets you know when you are making a mistake . Also in the future when a big sponsor realizes they can get in almost every tournament on the planet by sponsoring mapmakers, team will become VERY important.

I think it would be apropiate if Wolf would ask the questions in the first interview with jacky. I belive he has many questions regarding Crossfire.

P.S. I'm just joking :D he makes awesome maps! Congratz on both sides of the deal.

Good to see him go to ESV's mapmaking team. I like his maps except Crossfire. I also wish Xel Naga Fortress lasted longer in GSL.

Jacky is awesome.
To this day, Crevasse is probably the most inspiring map I have ever seen. And I have probably seen thousands by now :D

I'm not really sure if some people in here understand that he didn't really make Crossfire. It was a remake of a BW map that Blizzard made, and Jacky only made some slight changes to make it viable in GSL.

Does it actually matter if people live in a house together playing Starcraft? Don't you have to connect online to play with each other anyway?

he isn't moving into a house with them.. and the comparison is weak because it is widely considered hugely beneficial to live with teammates.

Being on the same team as someone has competitive advantages. Having them explained to me from the map maker perspective was great and educational. The people who tried to take this opportunity to be a dick or w/e were funny

you get quoted cause yours was by far the worst. congrats!

Sorry man, dumb questions get dumb answers. My question was clearly rhetorical. Just as there are advantages to team-mates living together there are also advantages of someone from a different scene participating within the larger conversation that is map-making at ESV.

It used to be that the only way you could get maps into GSL was if you could talk to Mr. Chae directly, ideally in Korean (he has mentioned many times the language barrier was a big reason as to why he didn't affiliate with "foreign" map teams so maybe a year ago this would have been true, but not anymore. We've come a long way since then

What was GSL's reasoning for taking out Crevasse?

Looking at the maps, Calm Before the Storm just looks like an attempted revamp of Crevasse.
