During the Winter Championship, we revealed details for the Spring Season of the 2012 Pro Circuit. The season will culminate with the Spring Championship in Anaheim, California, June 8-10 at the Anaheim Convention Center. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is confirmed for the Spring Season and we will announce additional games over the coming weeks.

To recap, the Spring Season for StarCraft II will feature multiple stages of competition leading into the Spring Championship. Please read the full announcement for details of each stage. The events are as follows:
  • Open Online Qualifiers – March 30-April 15 – Online Only, Not Broadcast
  • Spring Arena 1 – April 20-22 – NYC – LIVE Broadcast
  • Invite-Only Online Qualifiers – April 27-30 – Online Broadcast (Note: broadcast dates TBA)
  • Spring Arena 2 – May 18-20 – NYC – LIVE Broadcast
  • Spring Championship – June 8-10 – Anaheim, CA – LIVE Broadcast and in-person spectators

We listened to your feedback, and you now have a variety of viewing options.

Buy a Spring StarCraft II Season Pass

  • FREE: Standard definition streaming during the Invite-Only Online Qualifiers and the Spring Championship remains free.
  • Spring Season Pass – $30: By far the best deal we offer. The Spring Season Pass gets you full HD access to all streams at all Spring Events at a substantial discount – 40% off what you would pay if you purchased each Event individually.
    • Get 1080p access to all streams at Spring Arena 1, the Spring Invite-Only Online Qualifiers, Spring Arena 2 and the Spring Championship.

  • Gold Members – Special Discount: Gold Members, who already have full HD access to the Spring Championship, get a special discount on full HD access to all other events in the Spring Season. The entire Spring Season leading up to the Championship (Spring Arena 1, Spring Invite-Only Online Qualifiers, Spring Arena 2) will cost you just $15. That is half what it will cost non-Gold Members.
    • Note that Gold Memberships are no longer available online, but they are available at GameStop and Toys “R” Us locations in the US. If you don’t have a Gold Membership, the Spring Season Pass is your best option.

  • A La Carte HD: If you want to pay for full access to each event individually, prices are as follows:
    • $10 for Arena 1
    • $20 for the Invite-Only Qualifiers + Arena 2
    • $20 for the Spring Championship

We hope you join us this Spring as we make MLG StarCraft II even bigger and better.

Great prices for me! <3 gold membership.

...That said I don't know how many people are going to spend 10 bucks on an eight player tourney for arena one but the spring pass as a whole is FANTASTIC (especially for us goldies)

*Hmm, not sure which thread will stay open, I'll go ahead and post here as well.*

Glad to see a good discount for Gold members. 15 bucks for 2 ppv arenas and HD qualifiers is an awesome price.

For those wondering:

If you paid for the season pass each season, you will be pay $120 for the year for all events and HD.

If you have gold membership for the year, you will pay $90 for all events and HD. (includes $30 for a year of gold)

If you do a la cart every season you will pay $200 for the year for all events and HD.

* Of course this is assuming similar number of events and similar pricing structure each season.

Sounds great, glad I have a gold Membership. If possible I think you guys should look into coming up with a better VOD directory system as it will soon be stuffed full of content from all of your events (a good problem to have)!

Will be purchasing my spring pass today.

I don't see anything fair about that, maybe fair for mlg measures but not compared to the general tournament footage.. I don't understand why mlg has to be the only tournament to not stream for free, I mean premium passes for higher quality or earlier vod access can still be offered. Apart from that 10$ is still too much money for an Arena.
The competetive Starcraft scene is far away from being ready for pay tv, don't understand this at all and I think the people who make MLG are seriously money-grubbing.

Well it is a good thing you can still watch two of their events on a free stream, with the VOD's for the PPV being free after the event!

i'm not excited about the arenas as i was let down big time watching the winter arena. I associated arena with special effects, a large venue and a massive crowd. The arena i spectated was like a LAN party in an office building with people working running around although the view of Manhattan was magnificent. Until the Arena experience is fully developed i will wait patiently.

What is a Spring Arena? And are the actual MLG <Location>s still going to be free to watch? (I guess that's the Spring Championship right?)

I don't plan on paying for MLG (or any SC2 tournaments) and I doubt I ever will, but this does seem like a reasonable price.

The way you are thinking is so last year. There's enough content for you to watch if you don't want to pay for it. Just don't watch it then. You don't HAVE to watch it. The people that do want to watch the Arena's will pay for it, and based on the previous Arena, it was worth it overall.

Being a gold member, I now get two Arena's for the same price as the Winter Arena, so I'm happy ^_^.

I paid for the first arena although I will probably not buy any this time. Doesn`t seem as hype as the championship events(just feels like glorified qualifiers but with nice prizes) and there appears to be other means to watch it.

Who knows I might end up buying it when the time comes near, but it doesnt seem like it.

Couple things
[1] VODs are free a week after the event happens.
[2] You're complaining because somebody isn't willing to give you something for free
[3] They're flying all these korean players into the MLG studio and paying for their hotel stay and roundtrip. It costs a lot of money.
[4] There are people who are willing to pay for this event to support MLG and eSports.
[5] Compared to how much money you spend doing other things that cost money, you get an incredible amount of content.
Buy a movie? (1.5 hours) $15. Rent it? (1.5 hours) $7. Go golfing? $20 (4 hours)
MLG? $30 (10 hours MINIMUM)

I can definately pay 15$ for HD for 4 events, it's a very good price. I'm a little bit sad MLG don't care as much to bring in new viewers like they did last season. I remember MLG being on the top of r/gaming, now it's like they choose to go the other way, looking for the hardcore fans only. Oh well as long as they keep putting up good events I'll watch and pay as much as I can afford.

Im not buying this mostly because Im not working atm so cant use my money in this kind of things and even if I find prices a little high I see no problem about it.. we still get same things as last years for free and they just added more and ask money for it..what means no one is forcing you to buy it.. yay if you like it and can buy it then do it.. if not then just don't do it

It's not about "wanting" to make a profit. It's about turning this business model into a business that makes a profit in order to not have to close down. Thats what its about.

I like the new setup, $30 for the season of events is much more reasonable than just $20 for a weekend. Well done MLG, well done.

$30 is a very good price. I guess they thought they could lower the price not only because of feedback from the community, but Sundance did say that viewership for the $20 pay per view event was actually higher than they anticipated.

<3 you MLG.

Also to people who say they don't understand the pricing, one of the reasons I love MLG and am happy to pay for it is the storylines. The open bracket format lends itself to epic, epic runs (Naniwa, Polt etc) and there are so many awesome rivalries (Idra vs MC?). So yeah, thats why I think its fair.

Much better price system. I have gold membership, but am going to wait till the line-up is revealed for the Spring Arenas before buying them - nothing against MLG there, just the way I watch these days, need players I like before dropping the $.

EDIT: before anyone asks - any line-up that has one of Stephano, IdrA, Naniwa, Ret, Nerchio, HuK, and Sen is enough to draw me in.

interesting, ill wait till the date comes closer to these ppvs to see what the player line up is before deciding to purchase or not. The winter areana was good, but lets be honest, one of these upcoming areana's i forget which one will collide with dream hack. The last arena mlg might have been able to win out ASUS, but theres no way in hell people going to pay for mlg areana while they can watch dream hack for free on the same day. I will wait to see what the player line up is ( because obviously dream hack will steal some players) to make my decision.

I agree with the rest of your post and I think that it is awesome that MLG can do PPV events but people should not be buying PPV to "support ESPORTS" but instead because they feel like it's worth it for them. If people start buying PPV because they want to support ESPORTS/MLG then I'm afraid that the PPV thing might look a lot better than it actually is, which isn't good in the long run.

Sure the price is better but I still won't pay. I don't see why you can't provide a free stream like ANY other tournament, there is always free stream even if it's low quality.

Huzzah, glad to see the gold membership I bought will pan out and give access to the other events.

And to people bitching about not paying at all now, that's great, MLG isn't a starcraft charity and for esports to succeed they can't give everything away.

Indeed. <3 those Russians and Poles, MLG Winter Arena wouldn't have been the same without them. I'll go in for it this time though, now that I actually have the money

Why is the pricing so much better?
They have a new option "30$ for everything". The rest didnt change.
The new option is of course an improvement. But its still too expensive imo, especially if you can't watch everything (EU, other stuff).

The opposite of this? You want them to give you money to watch?

This pricing looks about perfect to me. Of course, I'd like to pay less, but if it wasn't for the fact that it seems I'll be traveling both Arena weekends this would be an instant buy for me, even if I didn't have Gold already. If I could watch MLG on my phone/iPad I'd probably buy it even then. :D

$1 = 0.63

$30 = 18.80
$15 = 9.40
$50 = 31.34
$10 = 6.29
$20 = 12.54

While I agree 30$ is an ok price for 4 HD events, I'm disappointed there's no option for paying only for the PPV events. Separating the qualifiers and arena 2 would let me save 10$ and it'd be a lot easier to pay 20$ than 30 - I might end up just paying for the first arena.

Very clever.

$20 for winter -> mass outrage
"only" $30 for all of spring -> wow that's much better, very fair (general reaction)

If the $30 was announced straight from free you'd get equal hate. But now it seems OK because of Winter. Good PR.

Whatever Paypal usually does. About 5-10% worse than straight exchange rate considering their exchange rate and fees.

Huh this seems to be a pretty good deal ^^ though I don't have any method to buy online, might go pickup a gold membership, especially since the SD streams for winter championship were really bad...

Anyways, this seems much much more feasible than the 20 bucks for the one arena, which actually worked out well due to TL's new (then) live reporting

Though I'd love more free content, I think that this should work out alright ^_^

Hehe true, i kinda wonder what the reaction will be when all big events go PPV and each event will cost around 10 bucks.... what a massacre will have then.

The reaction will be the same as now; anyone who wants to watch free, will find somewhere to watch free. Whether its a barcraft or a pirate stream, they will pay $0 and watch.

And anyone who wants to pay, will pay, and they'll feel good about themselves.

I might watch both but yes Dreamhack is Dreamhack.

The timezones make it so the events don't overlap. I'll be watching both.

no thanks, but I wish you success. We'll see what you do with dota 2 once it's released if I'm going to support MLG with my wallet any longer. I'm a gold member and for whatever reason i still only watched like 3-4 map 0 entire series from winter championship. This was not to any fault of MLG (other than that awful videoplayer =.=) I just haven't found myself as interested in sc2 lately.

I don't see anything fair about that, maybe fair for mlg measures but not compared to the general tournament footage.. Apart from that 10$ is still too much money for an Arena.
The competetive Starcraft scene is far away from being ready for pay tv, don't understand this at all and I think the people who make MLG are seriously money-grubbing.

Well, it's fair compared to the cost of the Winter Arena, which may have been their plan all along. Have a ridiculously high price for one event, then for the next event(s) include more content for a similar price so it looks like a good deal...at least compared to their previous deal. The problem still lies in the fact that their competitors offer a similar product for a lower price (or offer it for free).

I hope that they have that sweet DVR functionality that the regular MLG pro-circuit events have. Except that this time, I wish when you switched quality it wouldn't jump you to the very beginning (or if it's live, to the current live point).

More importantly: did anyone who was trying the "Ultimate" stream quality notice that when using the DVR functionality, it would keep skipping by like 10 seconds, every 30 seconds to a minute?

Extremely pleased with this. $15 with my Gold Pass is a fantastic price.

Even though I have to miss Anaheim for my sister's wedding. T_T Or else I would definitely be flying out there for the event.

I really like MLG's pricing strategies, make winter arena expensive compared to the spring season events, so people feel they are getting a great bargain, the bait and swtich tactic is brilliant, props to the smart people working for MLG's marketing, but regardless of the prices, I must agree with those who believe that sc2 has not matured enough to become ppv, the matches will be entertaining but Im certain that i have better uses for that $30

I'm a little confused, are you not able to purchase the Arena 2 and IO Qualifiers separately? I'd like to purchase arena 2 but i'm not very interested in the HD for the Qualifiers. Maybe I missed something in the thread but thats what it looked like.

Not sure why people think MLG is making it cheaper. You would be paying for 2 events (the other 2 would already be free) and one of those events is an 8 man arena. If you look at their "A La Carte", the pricing is actually quite similar for the 2 events. You would be getting HD for the other 2 events so that is a perk but the pricing for what you actually see is just about the same. The winter arena was a good event (imo, still not worth 20 dollars for the bugs it had) so it's not a terrible way to spend 30 dollars.

Edit: I think MLG did a much better job with the gold memberships this time.

Bait and switch is when the price is advertised as being low, and gets raised. This isn't bait and switch -_-

I don't think it was that good of a strategy they conpletly alienated some of their consumers with that move including me. Anyway I hope you guys get to see a good event for the money you pay for it.

Because if your plan is to watch the VODs 1 week later, if you're like most people, you'd have to try and avoid SPOILERS for an entire week to get the most "fun" out of watching the games.

I tried watching MLG Columbus like a mere 4-8 hours behind schedule on Championship Sunday, and I ended up spoiling myself twice on Twitter because I forgot to "not look". And I've spoiled myself once before simply by going to TeamLiquid.net

Also, watching things LIVE is a different experience (especially if you're hooked into a chat channel)

$30 seems fair, if you spread it across 4 events. But still I dont think I'll pay given that, I barely watched MLG Winter Championship! , but good luck to MLG

Honestly, "a few good games" is a severe understatement. MLG brings out the best in everyone who's playing and as such they put out some absolutely amazing games.

Not sure how this compares to the GSL prices if we put side by side the hours of content and the number of games. It seems to me that the GSL would still come off cheaper, even though it is still the best SC2 league in the world.

In any case, gl, this seems reasonable enough to bring probably even better profit than the WA testing concept.

also watching on VODs knowing its already happened just isnt the same. You cant experience it all with the community, and you have to try and avoid all spoilers.

I am fine with the Arenas being pay to watch because of the increased production value from the standard championship weekend!

Hm, everyone seems so supportive this time around. Despite the fact that apparently lots of people were wrong before Winter Arena that MLG wouldn't raise the price up from $20.

That's a 20$ for one weekend, this is a $30 for four weekend or $7.5 per weekend. It's quite a lot cheaper.

Apparently someone forgot how math worked...in case he wants percentages...MLG slashed the price per weekend by 62.5%

So does this include the price on going to see the championship as well? Or do I get a discount (as a gold member) on some other price for a spectator pass?

I think this is great, Good discount for Gold.

It's now at the point where if you told me what we were getting for the price it'll be for the whole year, I'd have bought it.

I think I pay more for GSL, which I can't watch live 90% of the time.

Its do this or try to live off of sponsor money. I would like my esport scene to be able to live off of its own merits, not on the whims of Intel or IGN.

I wonder what (if anything) MLG will replace gold membership with. Like will they just let everyone who has a gold membership expire as it comes up and not replace it with anything and move to per season pricing thats uniform?

Or will they have a "gold" membership that is similar in the future, just implemented differently. The whole gold membership does sound like something that was a carry over from before.

Thanks for the breakdown. My only gripe is that I somehow feel like I am being nickled and dimed. I would rather pay for a platinum account ~75 for a year of all MLG content than having a gold membership and still having to pay for other events. With an up front lump payment I could make the decision once and be done with it. As it stands now as a gold member, when an arena event comes up I still have to pay at least a small fee and answer to the wife each time.

I doubt i'll be paying this time round ( I did last time, and am currently a gold member), as I can't really afford to right now, and should probably focus on getting my degree at some point, but I have no issues with those prices

I wouldnt blame MLG for their pricing, after all if i was sundance, i probably charge as much as i could get away with.
and since MLG is a profit seeking business, charging a fee for providing quality service sounds pretty reasonable to anyone.
I definitely think MLG is going in the right direction, their efforts have come a long way in helping the growth of the esports scene in the west, think of how many jobs are created and how all those invovled benefit from this.

i'm really glad for MLG working towards reasonable pricing while still daring to make esports sustainable.
i'm personally not in a financial position to buy in on any of the tickets, but if i were, i'd probably throw down for gold membership and go for the gold discount season ticket--- fortunately the local barcraft has been good on gathering for the MLG events and providing a means for us non-ticket holders to get in on the arenas.

I hope they have robust sales with this new pricing model. More options are always better and this is a smart way to let people dip their toes in...should lead to more gold memberships.. Also its great to see them rewarding their gold members, as this was one of the major qualms people had with the winter arena.

I think the problem is that MLG is trying to switch to a different business model. They don't want gold memberships to exist at all. However people wanted them and they were selling them so they still have to honor them. This is their compromise.

This looks definitly far better than the last deal for the Winter Arena, i´m glad they lerned from it.
Seems like we´re on the right track that these events can be worthwhile for the companies and we don´t get ripped off.

i think its because they still are experimenting with how the seasons will work. summer season might not be the same structure are spring season

Its most likely going to be the EXACT SAME SHIT you got during the winter arena. Don't expect anything more than that! I would wish since the 1st arena is only going to be 8 players that they would have more free time to do interviews rather than shorter days.

Honestly, "a few good games" is a severe understatement. MLG brings out the best in everyone who's playing and as such they put out some absolutely amazing games.

I find it completely pointless to spend $ on this arena event when you can see those same exact players at the free event in June.

Did you see the winter arena? I saw the smallest of increase in production value. Definately not worth the $ IMO unless you just want to watch high level play. I can get that every night of the week for free watching GSL.

In any case, gl, this seems reasonable enough to bring probably even better profit than the WA testing concept.

MLG currently does not offer a team league. In that case GSL wins because they do!

Eh. I might pay 30 bucks to see it in person. Like if I was there. Don't really see how I could justify that just to watch on my internet from home. Won't pay it. Maybe Ill be able to watch, maybe I wont.

Its actually only 3 weekends. The online qualifers will be available in standard quality for free. I watched standard quality during the Columbus event and was more than satisfied. It was probably the best free SC2 tournament event out there by far in terms of video quality. Lets just hope they can fix the audio for Anaheim!

I totally agree. MLG is still the only SC2 organization running PPV only events. $15 a pop is still a bit steep. They currently are not giving me enough bonus content for me to foot the bill. I feel it is going to be their lifeline in 2012.

Yeah, Imean - is the ad revenue not enough for them like it seems to be for everyone else? You know, I wish my paycheck was fatter but I guess I just don't have the few thousand nerds to extort whenever I want.

You are forgetting about getting discounts for the summer and fall seasons. If they use this format for the rest of the year (which is likely) you spend $90 overall as a gold member, $120 if you are not.

Thanks for lowering the base price of each event, MLG, hopefully we can prove Sundance wrong and more than double the number of subs.

Fixing the paywall should help too....

I wonder if a package will be available for the remaining events after the first event is completed. + Show Spoiler +
(qualifiers+arena2+championship for $25? I guess the $30 package is still cheaper than buying the two "a la carte" options after the first event anyway; sales might increase accordingly with the price drop...undoubtedly requires more study to sort out the optimum price point, thanks for the data MLG!)

still seems a like a rip off to gold members, the pricing was the same for non-golds if they both bought packages taking into consideration the money the gold members payed just to be a member.

why not give gold members a free 480p stream for the arenas? just doesn't seem fair. I like that they've learned from their pricing, it seems pretty good for people like me who didn't invest in gold.

This looks very reasonable. I'll buy a spring pass. (who the hell is complaining now? It's fucking 10 dollars per event. Skip one big mac meal and you got the ticket.)
The truth is, Yagami-kun, I suspect that you may in fact be Kira.

You are forgetting about getting discounts for the summer and fall seasons. If they use this format for the rest of the year (which is likely) you spend $90 overall as a gold member, $120 if you are not.

What is the benefit to gold then btw?

did you read my post? you would save $30 if you are a gold member

you spend $30 to become a gold member, you aren't saving anything

its including that $30 already spent on gold.

gold is $30, plus $15 each season (for a full 4 season year) all together would be $90.

No gold means you are paying $30 4 times a year, which is $120. Thats $30 more.

Even for the rest of the year, you spend $30 + $45 = $75 which is $15 cheaper than paying $30 for each season.

Even at $30, I still won't be buying.

I don't feel that SC2, or gaming in general has gotten to the point where I would pay to see it. VODs are useless when you check the results anyway.

That being said, good luck with your business ventures MLG, I know you're already doing quite well.

The only problem I have is that I'm not a gold member and I don't have the option to pick up a gold pass now. Had I known the prices of these arenas during the winter championship I would have picked up a gold pass.

Just feels that I'm getting slightly fucked because of the area I live in. My internet connection speed is just not good enough to stream in HD, so the gold pass really hasn't been worth buying foe me until now.

I do believe the pricing is fair though, I just wish they had sold the gold passes for a bit longer, as I would have picked one up now.

well if it's really cheaper for gold members then good for you, getting a good deal. Does it convince me to get gold? nope.

I love MLGs tournaments but they change their minds on pricing all the time and always put their events on just the right date as to interfere with another big event. They clearly haven't figured out everything just yet, so if I do get gold it will be in 2013 when they've figured out their shit.

Good value, good price, good product.

Good on Sundance and MLG, who pump a LOT more money into this community than we realize. Like watching State of the Game, Live on Three, Kings of Tin? These shows and more are all made possible because MLG, EG and organizations like them have paid your favorite personalities a fair wage so that they have the time to create the free content you love.

Wait are these only for Starcraft 2?

What about Fighter arenas? Are they extra?

No MLG Dallas this year?

Or for that matter, most of the other venues that you were at last year?

Are you basically only going to have events for championships now? :/

The value is pretty good here, so I don't have very much of a complaint. That said, I do think that the actions of MLG here are non-negligibly sketchy.

They sold year-long passes last year that give you access only to the four Championships. This is a significant reduction over the number of events that that would have gotten you last year, mainly because they have replaced Championships with Arenas that aren't covered by the yearly pass. Since they never promised to keep the same format, they can hardly be said to have lied in selling yearlong passes at the end of last year.

That said, imagine that they sell yearlong passes at the end of this year that offer access to both Championships and Arenas, all while noting that the format might change next year. Then the next year, there are far fewer of these events, because they have replaced a number of them with "Coliseums." It'd be pretty sketchy of them.

Hence, non-negligibly sketchy but not the biggest deal.

This is nice. Basically $5 for HD access to the each of the events we don't get as Gold members. I can manage that.
If all you're offering is Dos Equis, I will stay thirsty thank you very much.

$30 for those interested in the whole season is good. $20 for the second Arena only is too much in my opinion.. I guess they are trying to get people to buy the whole season and were happy with how the first Arena sold. Those who can't watch all events for whatever reason don't have a good option though.

edit: but other than that I am really looking forward to this tourney, and I will probably be buying the $30 pass.

I'm REALLY not pleased with how they're treating their gold members. Like Nony, I love watching games live...which is exactly why I bought my gold membership. MLG isn't just charging me $20 for Arena, they're charging me for Arena after I've already paid for it. That's no bueno.

And I'm so tired of this pseudo charity mentality we're expected to have about esports. "These companies need to make money to grow Starcraft so you're a bad person if you don't buy their stuff" is utter nonsense. You want a real business truth? If you can't price your product competitively then you probably shouldn't be in the market at all.

I couldn't have said it better. I'm not a gold member, but if I were, I'd be up in arms.

You have to give it to MLG though in one point. I'm certain they know that $20 is LOLtastically overpriced, and they're willingly letting this event's viership numbers going to shit, so they can come out for the next event all sensible-like.

"We listened to community feedback, and we admit that for the last event we charged a bit more than the average ESPORTS fan is willing to pay. That's why we are willing to take the fall for our beloved community (that we're not trying to a**r**e), and even if business is going to be tough now and this will put us on the verge of bankrupcy, we have made the decision to lower our prices for the next event to $19.99 and for gold members to 18.99. If you don't pay that, you're hurting ESPORTS!!!"

Apart from that 10$ is still too much money for an Arena.
The competetive Starcraft scene is far away from being ready for pay tv, don't understand this at all and I think the people who make MLG are seriously money-grubbing.

Wanting to at least make a profit after years of not isnt exactly money grubbing.

Ahm... Growing like fuck due to SC2 and then trying to make a buck out of exactly that thing that kinda put you "on" the big map for me sounds like the definiton of money grabbing. FFS they even create entire new SC2 events just for the moneyz and kinda show the finger to their "root" games..... If that isn't money grabbing, what is? :D

Not that there is something inherently bad with it but... Uhm..

TBH, Im not going to pay for an event that isnt largely Korean, when KeSPA desides to go to sc2 I would gladly pay 15$ for a season, same as I do GSL, but its not really worth it to see the 8 EU and 8 NA members just autolose to koreans.

I used those two as an example of avg NA "pro gamers" that dont stand a chance against the actual top tier sc2 players (read: koreans). any random 2 NA players would have worked just as well.

I'll definitely consider getting the ticket for the arenas this time. The price is a lot more reasonable than last time, though I'm not 100% convinced that I'll be able to watch it live, so I won't be rushing to buy it.

This kind of sucks because now you have to live in the US to be able to purchase a gold pass which completely cuts out all the non-US fans who want to purchase the pass. Plus it's a whole lot less convenient to go out and buy a pass at Gamestop instead of online.

Well the discount for Gold Members are really nice, as a gold Member i get for 60$ a year ( 2 seasons + the gold members benefit ), but it would have been so much nicer if MLG actually mailed his Gold members with the information instead of letting them look it up.

Eitherway that's a communication thing, which could be better.

Except by most accounts the viewership numbers were higher than expected so MLG managed to pull a profit on the venture.

Thew viewership numbers may have been higher than what they expected because of the ways to get behind the pay wall. It just makes sense for them to reduce the price. Though don't hold your breathe for them to come out and say, you guys were right about the prices! Wouldn't be surprised either if they don't use twitch for any of this.

This kind of sucks because now you have to live in the US to be able to purchase a gold pass which completely cuts out all the non-US fans who want to purchase the pass. Plus it's a whole lot less convenient to go out and buy a pass at Gamestop instead of online.

Yeah I don't understand why they don't sell them online I was actually thinking of buying one right now before I saw that. Seems like a weird bussiness decision, but perhaps they don't want too many people buying gold passes since they make more money from selling individual tickets and they know people who would buy gold passes will probably buy the individual ticket once the event is coming up.

Oh wow i didn't know that, that a bit of a disappointment. I'm glad i got mine last august so it still counts for most of the events this year. I should check to see if it will continue after that one expires, cause i like this gold membership thing.

Anyhow, very nice job MLG. I thought the 20 dollar for last arena was a bit much, even with my 5 dollar discount. Was still worth the money though. But this seems like a great price and the discount for gold members seems more now. I'll gladly get the spring pass! :D

Very smart by MLG to put Spring Arena 2 and the qualifiers together for the pricing when probably 99% would not pay for a qualifier only, especially when it comes in SD for free.

Going to the Dreamhack Eizo tournament so no april arena tickets for me. Still a bit ticked of that they keep scheduling on the same weekend as other big tournaments. I think both times they've announced their date after the other tournament organizer.

Only DeMu was from the NA qualifier (which is the real topic of discussion), and he is not even american.
None of the NA players won against a non-NA player in the Arena. The only ones from the NA qualifier who managed to win against other players at the arena were a Swede and a Brit.

does not sound fair at all to me.
all they did is adding the $30 for everything option which is way too much considering you cant watch everything (timezones, dates) and there is tons of free HD content or HD content for much less $/month (ESL-HD for ~$50/year and there is much much much more content available, not only SC2).
that said it's still a valid option for someone who wants to watch everything and who wants to support MLG as organisation (who invites koreans and pays for everything, etc, etc).
but it's not a fair price for the given content.

all they did is overprice the first event (by aloooot) so these events seem to look good, but they dont.

The "thing you bought for $30" for MLG Columbus has to be the 1yr Gold membership, because that was priced $30, while a Columbus-only premium pass was $20.

With the Gold membership you get premium access to all championships (the old-school MLG events like we had last week) as well as a discount for the Arena packages.

The invite-only qualification has free option as well. The Arenas you can watch for free one week later as VODs.

I am a big fan of the season pass and Im glad that the gold discounts are good compared to the winter arena
But does anyone still feel the Arena 2 and Championship should have dropped its one time price? I mean we didnt like the $20 last time why should we like it this time or did we just get used to the price?
I like the $10 for the smaller arena though

Sundance, the price is too high. Assuming Winter, Spring, Summer, and fall Seasons, you're asking that I pay a minimum of 120$ a year if I want to see everything. I don't want to sound confrontational, but I would like an MLG representative to explain why I should pay to watch their tournament.

The GSL has better players. Dreamhack is a larger event (and is free). The IPL has better production values (and is mostly free).Instead of alluding to his yacht cruises if his PPV scheme doesn't pan out, or saying from one side of his mouth that MLG is a business, while out of the other the other begging for community support, Sundance should actually explain why his product deserves my money in this market.

Why should Sundance need to explain why people should buy it? People are already buying it, he doesn't have to do anything. Even now they are admitting they screwed the community and especially their own gold members with the first arena you dont hear a lot of people wondering about the business model from MLG.

MLG is lucky they have the name but they are walking on very thin ice. Esports will only get bigger and bigger in the future and when a organization is smart enough to jump on the Esports train the proper way, then MLG has a big big problem if they keep this business model which there basically stuck to now. (we have seen this over and over in other sports, it's just a matter of time)

MLG has decided that the best way to announce their upcoming events is to wait until two months before they happen to announce when and where they will occur. So much bad T_T

You're right in the short term. Right now, people are paying for MLG. But, you're also right that MLG is walking on thin ice. I would be shocked if the buy rates for Summer and Fall arenas grew appreciably. And, assuming MLG is still trying to peddle PPV in 2013, I would be surprised if buy rates didn't begin to fall. People won't keep paying for something that isn't worth it. MLG's tournaments and arenas aren't a great product when compared to other for pay entertainment.

$30 is an awesome value for the amount of content available!

Thanks MLG

i had no problem paying $15 as a gold member ... if i'd had to pay $30, i would have hesitated. yes, $30 for the entire spring season isn't bad; but i got an annual pass for GOM and it was under $100, with much more/better content

I believe $0 is exactly the right amount for me, so I think that's the one I will be going with.

All the best to MLG.

Sundance and crew really get it. $30 for it all of $15 for Gold members is very aggresively priced. I certainly hope they can keep upgrading their production quality as the seasons go on. Winter Arena was a great step for them.

I'd have paid 30 willingly if the first arena was actually an event, not just a ridiculous moneygrab. 8 man 3 day tourney... what on earth were you thinking. I mean even supplementing the tournament with online players wouldve been better than having such a pitiful event.

Dissapointed you're still going with 20 dollars for a each real arena.

The first event is a bit of a joke. The sad thing is that while replying to this post I got an ad for Major League Soccer, which says:

$59.99 gets you access to 230+ Major League Soccer games in 2012.

I tell myself, soccer is a syndicated sport and has a huge number of sponsors, but it doesn't change that I'm paying for a lot less in eSports.

Having said that, flying eight players to the US is expensive, as is paying for their lodging, the $10,000 cash prize, and the studio and staff.

I see why MLG does this, but do not understand why it's so hard for them to get sponsors. I also think flying in a couple of extra players is going to do wonders for this tournament, but eight isn't enough to work with.

Decent enough options, i think ill get it as already being a goldmember for a year. Depends how they sort VODs, because thats the only reason i bought gold (cant watch live unfortunately).

ps. @sundance if he's reading: the VOD system could still use some improvement!

MLG has decided that the best way to announce their upcoming events is to wait until two months before they happen to announce when and where they will occur. So much bad T_T

What are you talking about? We have known for months the locations of every single event but the last one which they hint as a surprise that they will probably tell us soon.

I guess the price per event is better now, so well done there. The content of each event though.. I don't know, I'm not convinced about the format yet. I don't want to be too quick to proclaim it a money grab and more SC2 is always nice (though again with the scheduling conflicts guys? ><), but MLG is losing some of it's MLG shine doing all these small side things, for me that is. Basically the one I will be looking forward to is the last one and the pricing of that on it's own is still the same. Will have to see how the other ones develop.

It gives you HD for the 4 main events, which otherwise only have free LQ. It doesn't give you access to the additional PPV Arenas, but it gives you a discount from the price. Think of the Arenas as a bonus content, which only exists because it's PPV (even for Gold members). The alternative would be that these bonus events don't exist at all.

Hmm not quite worth it for me I think, considering that I didn't enjoy the last Arena that much and well... May 18-20th? That's gonna be Diablo 3 time, no matter what ;p

Although I'm already looking forward to watching Sc2 Tournaments while playing Diablo 3 - awesome timings incoming :D

It's what gold membership was for the last arena: a discount. Except unlike last time, where it was a $5 discount, you get half off the bundle deal. And gold is good for a year. So that's 4 bundle deals, so you save a pretty good chunk of money. Plus, it gives you access to all the stuff at the main events. So that's 4 tournaments, plus 8-9 that you get for half off/get to see that you normally wouldn't.

Speaking of money, MLG I hope you guys enjoy mine :D

Awesome, MLG columbus was great, huge audience and a really fun thing to witness. Can't wait for the spring season, seems like MLG is really dialing this all in. They are looking good from an outside prespective and I really hope these arenas are succesful for them. I know I'm paying for these.

Bah not a fan of being forced (as in no free stream, not a gun to my head) to pay to watch any STARCRAFT event. I will never purchase anything MLG related, and there are always ways to watch it free, and no I don't feel bad about that.

I thought gold included this. Actually noticed that it said "championship events" instead of just events, but I assumed "1 premium tournament per month" would cover it. Also I wrongly assumed that they wouldn't be so cheap about it and that plenty of people must feel cheated just like me if it doesn't cover it.

Guess I know now what to expect at least.

I could afford this easily, but I won't buy it. If I compare it to the prizes of IPL and ESL TV (IEM and HomeStory) it is just ridiculously expensive. I can't understand why everybody here is saying that is a fair deal. It is not as shameless as Winter Arena, but it is still a rip-off. IPL is 60$ for one year, everything included. ESL TV is 48$ for one year, everything included...

Glad I bought a Gold Membership! Thanks for listening to fans and the community about the price point MLG! Hope the Spring season is as good as Winter, because even though I paid 20 bucks for a weekend, the games were Epic, and I loved the SC Action!

Thx MLG !

the price is not a problem for me(but it's still much higher than ipl and esl), but looking at the recent events i just don't think that you or twitch.tv are able to provide a lag free 1080p stream in europe.

Well I feel MLG really decided not to work with GSL on scheduling anymore. GSL publically announced their schedule on 3/6 and I'm sure they made that schedule long before that for their entire 2012 calendar. Two conflicts so far. GSL Code S 4/18 and 4/19. MLG 1st Arena 4/20-22 T_T

2nd Arena on 5/18-20 conflicts with GSL CodeS finals on 5/19. T_T

So think about it. Possibly a player plays through all the MLG online shit and then skips the arena due to schedule conflicts with GSL or the requirement that they be present with their team at the finals. Seriously MLG you're killing esports by not even attempting to work with GSL. And the same goes with GSL not attempting to work with MLG.

Yeah I really don't understand the Gold membership. Lets look at the pricing.

$90 = will get you everything (assuming MLG doesnt change their pricing for the final two seasons)

Gold pass $30 + $60 = will get you everything (under the same assumption)

I do not know if Gold passes have ALWAYS BEEN $30 for the past calendar year.

Free = Live online tournament (fixed timeslot) and live championship tournament (larger timeslot) in 480p and wait a week for VODs after all each event.
