Imagine if I went to an old folk's home and casually commented, "Gah, why don't you people just die already? You know it's going to happen, get on with it." I wonder how they might receive that. More like going to an out dated computer lab and going "Gah, windows 95, why dont you just upgrade to windows 7?" I believe this would be received well. Extreme analogies dont help anyone. Your analogy isn't any better because the game isn't broken. In fact, lots of people enjoy looking at it and the game runs super fast. We have a ton of tools we can use for it too. Windows 95 isnt broken, chips challenge was and still is an awsome game. And SC2 is not an improved version of BW. Graphically it is an improved version, and the visuals are most of what matters in a predominately spectator sport. But these stupid analogies aside; Kespa would only be making this decision if they saw a decline in viewing figures for BW that made it a lot less of a risk to attempt switching over and uprooting a massive community and a large player base. Clearly the viewer figures have reached a point where it is no longer monetarily an option for them to keep going with this sinking ship, so-to-say. After all they are a big business, and money is everything to them.
If visuals were what matters the most, BW would've been replaced by another game several times already. If graphics matter so much, why won't SC2 leagues switch to CoH or, better yet, DoW2?

Furthermore, the playerbase has been steadily consolidated to the truly good players, meaning that anyone who does happen to see a shitty looking game and still wants to play it will soon be deterred from playing anyways due to being endlessly slaughtered. Not only will we not know anything about the strategy, mechanical requirements or anything like that, the casters will most likely be speaking in Korean, preventing effective learning from just listening to the casters. Many of us will have to actively research to figure out what the hell is going on and why these guys are screaming so much. Why would we do that when we could just switch to a different stream when BW comes on, or, better yet, just go watch one of the mainstream SC2 tourneys?

I've yet to see a single BW fan that considers SC2 an improved version of StarCraft. It's always "it's a different game", "give it time" or "it has potential"... The only people who consider it an improvement are those who have gotten into SC2 with no prior BW experience (aside from maybe some casual play 10-15 years ago). Their opinion has no merit because how can they judge whether SC2 is an improvement without having any serious BW experience?
|
An unnamed Korean industry insider said "There is a strong possibility that the next season of Proleague will have both SCBW and SC2, and the next one after that will have only SC2".
That would truly break my heart. I would be sadder than I've been in a very long time.

You seem to think I am bashing BW. I am not bashing BW. In fact, the difficulty of the things like AI and control group limits have lead to things like the micro intensive battles that have made BW popular. One would argue that those things are perhaps the biggest factor that separates BW from SC2 and makes SC2 a fundamentally different and undeniably easier game. I am not bashing BW. I am saying that BW is a noob-unfriendly game, the same as nearly every prequel compared to nearly every sequel. I suppose that saying BW is a noob-unfriendly game would have been an adequate TLDR to my post, as the innate tendency for video games to become noob-unfriendly is what I was using as my reason to denounce the effectiveness of the analogy used by the poster that I was responding to. Physical sports stay largely the same, barring things like new equipment, and become arguably better because of the advances in technology, while video games become noob-unfriendly and and thus lose their fanbases over time due to the same advances in technology. That was my point.

rooooofl, hey bro you sound pretty mad.
Anyways, the guy you quoted is 100% correct, BW is fated to die out in time simply because at this point it won't really be gaining new blood, newer RTS gamers are much, much more likely to gravitate towards SC2, that's just the way things are. Sure there's many of us who love BW and consider it a superior game in many regards but nostalgia alone can't keep the game alive.
Even if you compare Starcraft to physical sports there isn't really much difference. Physical sports have been around for a really long time and all of them have undergone changes in the way the games are played and the rules to follow. Heck, I'd be willing to bet that when these types of sports were changed players would argued that the era that preceded it was more difficult and more authentic as well.
This is nothing new, BW is doomed to die, let it die gracefully like the sweet prince that it is.

KesPa is one of the only ways SC2 can be taken to the next level in Korea. Blizzard knows that they need Kespa in order to increase the market. KesPa/HOTS partners!

And to the guy who wrote below abou SC2 posters: I started playing and following the scene with SC:BW and I do respect it hell a lot.

I was wondering why all these trash posters weren't getting banned or even warned; then I realized this was the SC2 forums. Well, now that this thread is in "Community News" perhaps some fairer judgment can be taken? All you SC2 players don't know what you are missing out on if BW dies. If you were able to look past the dated graphics you would see that this game is superior to SC2 in pretty much every aspect. There is a reason why many people here are upset and it's not because of elitism or nostalgia. It's because we played and watched both games and think that BW is better.
If BW dies I'd rather watch LoL than SC2. Judging from this thread the LoL community is really not that worse than the SC2 community and I'd rather watch a different genre game than a bastardization of the greatest esport.
