I fail to see how OP is "shitty." It does exactly what it needs to. As for the changes, glad to see them FINALLY doing something about the terrible custom game system they've had in place.
One link and two words? Seriously? Haven't you ever seen people rant about required effort for OPs?
Anyways, I hope that Blizzard implements these new changes.

Sounds decent, hopefully it's implemented well. I really wish they would add an automated tournament system like what WC3 had, it was really fun.
Considering they are looking for a new lead designer for b.net, it might be that they got rid of the old one when they fired the 600 people due to how awefull a system that was created
To help players find games more easily in patch 1.5, we intend to include an “open games list.” To be clear, this will not be every open game that is on the service. Instead, the open games list will deliver to you a selection of games from the many hundreds or thousands that are currently open. We are currently working on different ways to determine how the list you’ll see is generated.
I wonder why you can't give us complete lists? I guess with party system and all it's not too bad for getting friends into a game, but i still prefer the way old b.net did things. :/ Looking forward to seeing how 1.5 fleshes out tho, perhaps some preview screenshots from big blue are in order eventually.

And how does this mean that HoTS wont be out until 2013? if anything it means it will be out before 2013.
Well it just seems that they're still working on major updates for WoL, and gauging the community response and therefore still gathering data. Or am I wrong?
Is it just me or does this update feel "empty"? Lots of good concepts in theory, but I don't believe the actual patch we'll get is gonna be anything near what the community is craving for. Let's hope I'm wrong, but seeing sc2's update history, there's a good justification for sceptism.
And also, what about game balance? They've been talking about terrans lackluster late-game unit choices for a while now and there's no mention of this anywhere...
We’re also working on a feature that will help players connect with other players and games that are near their location (connecting through the same IP). We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. Although this may not be ready in time for the release of patch 1.5, we do intend to have this available by the time Heart of the Swarm ships.

Yeah, the LAN searching features which might be out in 1.5, but if not, it will come with HoTS sounds like 1.5 will be the last big UI update before HoTS. At Blizzcon they also said the Arcade would be out just before HoTS, so it sounds much like they will release D3 and maybe soon after D3, HoTS will follow. So this patch announcement is BIG!

To be fair this idea was kicked around, and supposedly was worked on, back in WoL beta. I'd love to see a solution that eleminates issues like toruney whitelisting and lagouts at major events, even though lag at a major event did give us this awesome piece of starcraft 2 history:
