I know the esports people have been fantasizing about the dough they could extract from a community that wants to be "patriotic" esports consumers. It'll be an interesting experiment. There are multiple aspects that made SC an attractive thing to watch/enjoy. One of them was the pricepoint.

4+ streams is too much IMO, maybe 2, but not 4. For $20 I'd rather be able to watch each match, rather than have to pick and choose.

That's why i loved the way they were doing it before. I had access to stuff that was good for my setup, and the stuff i couldn't use, i didn't have access to anyway. I doubt a ton of people are in the same boat tho.

Yes, I think multiple streams is kinda silly. Two is fine because then you have a choice, five is kind of ridiculous. It makes me feel like the content just goes to waste. It also raises the price because there's more production, more commentary, and more necessary equipment. I'm only going to watch one of the streams at a time (and most people will focus on one or two matches at a time) so again it feels wasteful.

Actually what I want is ideally a 3 stream setup, caster view, and an first person view of each of the players who are up at a particular time. FPVODs just are sick, and have yet to be well exploited by the tournaments.

But the problem is that there is so much SCII content out there. We've got personal streams, smaller (daily) tournaments (Playhem, Go4SC2, ...), online events (Korean Weekly, KSL, .... ) big events (Dreamhack, Assembly, HomeStoryCup) and the large ongoing tournaments like MLG / GSL / IEM / IPL. Also a lot of this is completely free of charge or at least available for free in low quality. You pay for HQ streams, VODs, more streams. But how many are paying for those options? Its hard to get any real number, if you arent deep involved in it. I think HSC4 got something like 60.000 viewers on the freestream, the premium peaked at 7000? viewers. HSC was a very special event and the price for the premium ticket was very low with only 5 € for the whole weekend. But only +/- 10% of the people payed for it. MLG demands 20 $ for a 3 day event with 5 streams with additional features, instant VODs, lots of great players. Is the price reasonably? I think yes, 20 $ isn't a lot a money for me. But a lot of the viewers are only in school, college, university or starting to work. For them it's a lot of money, maybe even to much. Even if you can spare 20 $ each month for eSport, you have to choose which event is worth it. Do you go with the best cost-value ratio? Do you go with the best production? Do you go with your favorite players? Do you go with the caster choice? When are those games played? Each one of us got other preferences, so MLG will have to work very, very hard for their money. MLG will not have my money for the Winter Arena, its on a bad time for me, also Assembly is going on at the same time. If the next event isnt competing against another tournament at the same time, I'm pretty sure that I'll pay for it.

Our goal at MLG will always be to give aspiring gamers a platform to compete, while broadcasting that competition to spectators and fans. I'll wait to see if any replies start asking why this is 'funny' before I go off on it. Happy hunting all!

As long as (amount of people who pay $20) > (amount generated from ad-impressions on free viewers), then it's a win for them. Perhaps $20 was alittle steep though, one of these things that you could convince 10000 viewers to pay $5, but only 1000 viewers to pay $20. We'll see how it works out.

Most people who didn't do so previously (including me) will continue to limit their viewing. I paid before but this is too rich for my blood. I'm not sure where I draw the line but this is clearly over the line as far as what I'm willing to pay.

The people who invest in those ventures want to see some return on their investment. But the problem is that there is so much SCII content out there. That's a lot of dough they're dishing out to make a tournament that the fans want to see, but there's probably no way they'd recoup from just having free stream viewers so they slap a charge on it. The problem for me isn't, "well if 1000 will pay it's alright you'll still get a profit". the problem is, "we want esports to grow that's our dream to reach as many people as possible and have this merge in the west and growth growth growth everywhere everywhere"....and you set up a program that you hope 1000-2000 of a previous 35k will be a part of. you're literally taking your dream (not you you), and appealing to new audiences and growing esports to more people, and shooting it in the head. it makes me sad.

Hopefully they consider a price drop to around 5-10$ for the weekend.

If Sundance wants money, he should try to make this is a big deal. He'll have thirty two players, without any fans, in a new tournament enviorment that we've never seen before. They could do lots of cool things to exploit the no fans and having a wide array of players there. Games, interviews, charades, strategy discussions. If Winter Arena wants to be a success, they need to be something other than just another tournament. Yes, the winner gets $10,000, but it still is just the tournament before the real tournament. Assembly might have a slightly weaker line-up, but still have Polt, JYP, Puma, and some European favorites. Sundance needs to find a way so that the Winter Arena just isn't another tournament except that you need to pay $20 to watch it. Fuck, make the Koreans face off against the Foreigners in a big game of Twister. Take my money. I won't see that at Assembly.
