If it was 10 dollars I think most people would purchase, I think whoever did the number crunching aimed slightly too high with this one. People were moaning about the GSL yearly pass being too much money, when it is clearly a better deal than this, with better players and production.

I have paid for every MLG events HD ticket, even though my internet can't even handle the HD stream (excluding during the time they gave it for free, obviously). I paid for the other tournaments because the price wasn't that much anyway's and it was good to support a well run organization. I am willing to pay up to $10 per MLG tournament, any more just doesn't seem reasonable to me. Pooling money together with friends is not an option, since none of my friends even care for esports. Going to a barcraft is not an option when your married... with (young) children.

I think it's interesting, that Sundance has chosen to spend so much money on players' travel expenses - Dosn't the players teams / sponsors handle this fine at the moment? If the right amount of Prize money is there, don't you think the players will be there?

Isn't it up to 1,000.00 USD each for all 32 players in travel expenses? You could make quite a sick prizepool for that.. Or make a stream.. Not PPV :-)

I realize that Korean teams still don't have money to send over a lot of players, but honestly, there are quite a alot foreigners that I would really like to watch battle it out in a tournament such as this - A few koreans would be awesome, but not a must for it to be worth my time... Maybe its just me though :-)

Haha as ridiculous as that sounds it might be true. I'm pretty sure if this costed $5 almost all people who watch SC would pay for it. But with $20 most people will not.

you've all been spoiled by free, unsustainable, low standard content, says I

That's not the point.

For MLG to charge $20 for 2 days for an event, you have to weigh that price against other things that we have. You don't just ignore the competitive prices of other events when you go to pay for something. You don't go to the grocery store and buy something for more money when you can get something the same or better for less.

GSL charges less and has higher production and still offers a free alternative. Assembly will have free HD streams going on at the same time as this MLG event. We've had previous MLG, Dreamhack, GSL, etc all for free and to be honest it's been MLG that's been more known for 'technical difficulties and crappy formats' than any of the others yet they are the ones going first for the PPV model?

My first thought was comparing MLG to GSL. GSL you get a few months of content for $5 less and GSL has a higher prize pool, why is it then that GSL gives more money to the players and charges less? MLG is doing something wrong, I know they are paying travel and what not but they also seem to have more sponsors than GSL and they run ads, which GSL doesn't.

All in all, I feel like they are being extremely greedy and if someone can't/doesn't want to pay $20 for MLG you shouldn't call THEM greedy or poor because it's MLG who's begging for money.

The problem with your argument is the lack of sustainability of western professional SC2. The argument we should "weigh that price against other things that we have" would inevitably lead to there never being PPV tournaments, since as you say we've had and continue to have some free HD tournaments. The fact that you point to Assembly's free HD as a standard by which we should compare the MLG PPV is telling. Moreover the comparison to GSL is unfair because GSL has access to a domestic audience where Starcraft is already popular. Thus GSL has a foundation to work from that western tournaments do not. So it's reasonable for western tournaments to charge more than GSL does.

If we believe what Sundance is telling us (and I don't think he would lie to the community), then there needs to be some cash infusion from the community if MLG (and probably other western tournaments) is to continue existing at its current quality level. Now, if you don't think you have $20 to spare, that's certainly your prerogative. But to say that the price of western SC2 PPV should always correspond to its market value when compared to Korean (read: GSL) tournaments is to say that you're fine with western pro SC2 dying out sooner than later.

For the sake of esports, I and I believe many others will be paying for this. And while I know a plea for civility is probably futile on an internet forum, you shouldn't use exaggerated language such as "greedy" if you want this thread to be a productive discussion.

See, you say for the sake of ESPORTS you'll pay for it.

But frankly for the "Sake of esports", you should tell MLG to find a different model than trying to force PPV to work. Because it won't in the long run.
Paying for the 'sake of esports' is the completely wrong mindset going into PPV. You're just throwing money away for no good reason. For long term sustainable growth you should be investing your $20 (or whatever) into tournaments you feel deserve that money - for their quality, professionalism or whatever. Reward based on content, not based on the false premise of growing esports.

very good point.

in order to be successful, we cannot simply rely on the esports train to carry us forever. That is a business doomed to fail since it relies on emotion and a die hard fan base. to be truly successful, they must be objective in their aims and business savvy in their own right. Look, we can help these guys by buying all their shit. But it ain't gonna last if WE are the only ones buying into this. MLG needs a better business plan that BRINGS in ALL types of viewers and sustains them in a cutthroat efficient manner. This is business folks and business is serious.

Beginning of the end. Doing PPV events before the audience is big enough to keep the buzz and talk going is a recipe for DISASTER. SC2 grows because it has a ton of eyeballs, remember those 300 page MLG threads? Get ready to see them in the 50-100 page range IF THAT. Also I'm sure the teams that rely on sponsorship just absolutely love the fact that they'll be getting a fraction of the audience.

Part of me feels that MLG is trying to recoup the cost of paying for all the players travels on the viewers dime. The majority of the players are on freaking teams, it's their teams responsibility to get them to events. Now that cost is being passed straight on through to the viewer. WTF. The beauty of this, is they are asking us to pay for an event with ZERO audience(which is what basically made MLG). Also denying Gold Members... talk about yet another bait and switch.

If you reward a move like this just prepare to get fucked later on for more money and more barriers. $20 dollars here and $20 dollars there adds up eventually to real money. Are a substantial amount of people really prepared to start paying $200 and $300 a year just for the privilege of watching SC2? Somehow I doubt it. Wonder why they never tried this with Halo and all the frat boys but, think they can do this shit to the SC2 community.

I do applaud MLG for one thing. They announced the event with nothing about it being PPV to create the free hype, cast the spoiled qualifiers for "free" and then last minute let them know you gotta cough up MORE money to watch the event. Wonderful business decision that I will not get behind and hope it fails.

VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLARS.

Not buying, and I'm sure many won't too.

I guess that's all people want it to be. Supporting something you love to see it grow pass expectations seems fair to me. Hearing the MLG doesn't make back what they put in tells me where never gonna go anywhere passed our own bubble we're in. But everyone seems so entitled to free content so hey don't watch it.

For eSports to survive, it must have a sustainable business model, and covering all expenses from sponsors is not sustainable in the long term. Personally I think eSports enthusiasts should be happy that it is serious companies such as MLG and ESL that are asking for money, with the view of injecting it back to eSports. Both have won, or should have won, the loyalty of eSports enthusiasts, so let's give them something really small back, but which in essence helps a lot.

I'm totally on board with you. Sustainable business models must be established to secure the future for the eSports community. If everything continued to be free (for large scale events such as this one) there would come a time when sponsorship money alone simply cannot get it done. Not to mention that it puts a huge amount of stress on the teams financially to get their players to and from events. This system is much better from a sustainability standpoint when you look at the whole of the industry. There are plenty of events that should remain completely free (the daily/weeklies that are online comps with no overheads for studios/infrastructure) because there needs to be a product in the marketplace to attract people to SC2 in general. If you want blockbuster events that are on the scale of MLG, ESL etc then I think people are going to have to get used to paying in some form at the very least because I'd rather pay and have the leagues then refuse to support them and eventually see them die out because I was a scrooge.

Just because a Lamborghini is out of my price range doesn't mean that I'm going to be pissed off at the manufacturer.

You would be pissed if you were told the Lamborgini is available for driving to you once a month for the weekend, only to be told randomly later on that you must buy it, and thats its a godamned privilege to support the company making the product.

Sorry, as big of a supporter as I am of SC/esports, I will not be paying for this and I guess I'm not gonna watch it. Too much money for such little content. Never been a fan of PPV, whether it's this or with RL sports such as boxing/UFC, you get such little bang for your buck.

And for everyone saying "y u madz?"... MLG has always had a free SQ stream. This is completely new, that's why people are upset. That and it's announced so close to the date... I mean, some people were really looking forward to this FREE entertainment, and then 2 weeks before it's supposed to happen you hear it's gonna be PPV? Pretty shitty, very little notice.

One of the great things about Starcraft is that it is free to enjoy. How would we have grown the community without the youtube casters etc. in Brood War/SC2? Not to mention all the free content that is created, it will be hard to justify paying $20 for a 3 day tournament.

Do not compare foreign viewers of BW (who are worth exactly zero $ to the Korean centric advertisers) with the state of SC2, where the paid content is easily the best (GSL, admittedly with free stream)

IDK about casters, but I assume they'll have the normal set.

I just can't afford it honestly. It's a real shame they're doing, I understand they have to.. but bottom line I think this is really going to hurt MLG.

20$ may seem like nothing to most of you but college/housing is a real bitch. I'm really going to miss my MLG weekends, but not enough to pay 20$.

When I see someone doing something 'in their own best interest' that involves fucking over everyone else, I get fuckin' mad because that person is a selfish prick who needs to think about more people than themselves.

So you want the government to act in your self-interest then.

People subscribe to government for order and protection.
The cost you pay is in taxes and rights.
Unfortunately there is a monopoly in that you can only live places where there is a government, unless you by an island.
