I pay my own bills, my own rent, my own gas money, my own meal money thank you very much. To some people, money is slightly more important. I think YOU are the one who gets to have whatever you want. Why else would you drop $20 on a single weekend of videos like its nothing? Maybe because he think its presents value for him? To me, $20 is incredibly good value for the games that are going to be played on the weekend, and I'm in the same position as you. As Boss mentioned, people have been fed high quality content for free for a very long time, so this transition into what hopefully proves to be a sustainable revenue stream for the highest quality tournaments was always going to be difficult. I personally don't mind paying. I pay for all the other events I want to see (live music, Sky Sports etc) so this is no different. I want the players that provide me with entertainment to be paid. For the record I can see why some people would think this is expensive, compared to GSL especially. But hey man, compared to the £50 + I spend whenever I have a night out, this seems like good value.

This is why you people keep electing fucking retarded politicians who promise you a tiny tax cut while gutting your countries education system because you don't have kids yet to put through school. I'm not sick, so I don't want national health care. I don't drive, why do i have to pay for roads. Selfish pricks. When I see someone doing something 'in their own best interest' that involves fucking over everyone else, I get fuckin' mad because that person is a selfish prick who needs to think about more people than themselves.

Why do I want to pay $20 to watch great players kick the shit out of not so great players, I can get that for free while watching Idra's Korean stream. Everybody trying to milk the SC2 cow before it runs dry, including Blizzard.

"Meaningful prize pools are important!" "'e-sports' needs to grow!" "SC2 needs more big time sponsors!" but... "I don't want to pay for anything" "why don't tournaments provide HQ everything for free!?!" "why isn't this tournament broadcast during my optimal timeslot?" "why doesn't every cent that the tournament generates go directly into the prizepool/infrastructure?" seriously people

I realise that this is cheap by PPV's standards but I don't think starcraft fans really want to shell out so much money for such an event, with GSL its different since Its on every night for me at ~7pm so I pretty much replace TV and movies with GSL over the course of a month.

The biggest problem for teams/players/events is travel costs, which were/are nonexistent in BW. Flying players from all over the world to NY is a HUGE investment, having Koreans show up to the GOM studio is not. With that being said, I think the price is a little bit too high, but they'll most likely lower it in the future. I'm also chuckling at the "MLG IS SO GREEDY" and "MLG IS SCAM!!!" posts, as if it doesn't cost them a ridiculous amount of money to run these tournaments. During BWs peak im pretty sure they could afford this, given that some of the top tier players were on $200k salaries back then. The difference between BW/SC2 is that BW (somewhat) made the leap into the mainstream where non-niche products could be advertised (such as, gilette, coke, bacchus and various mobile phone corps)

The majority of you complaining about this are not thinking this through very clearly. Yeah, it's $20 for only 3 days. Do you know how businesses grow though? They do things like PPV, where they don't have to keep pouring their own money into a product. I don't know. I can't even begin to tell you how disgusted I am at most of you replying with "Oh my god, $20 is dumb. Not watching. horrible idea." Get real. If you guys actually understood how the real world works, you wouldn't be complaining and would be advocating this idea. But it seems you all live with your parents, or someone still pays for your shit. If you understood how the real world works, you would understand that people pay for what they feel is worth paying for. And at the moment not many people think it's worth $20. Get real. EDIT: By no means am I advocating free tournaments all the time. I pay all the time for GSL and GSTL. I just don't feel MLG's price is very worth it at the moment.

Watching the Arena isn't your right, it's a privilege. No one is making you pay to watch it, if you don't want to invest the money, simply don't watch it. Just because a Lamborghini is out of my price range doesn't mean that I'm going to be pissed off at the manufacturer.

PPV is a quick way to make money, MLG doesn't give a shit if E-sports grows. Because if there is a way too watch it for free the game can actually grow, more people can find out about it and so on. If you go PPV on a fkin game with such a small fanbase you just want to make some quick money. wheee the scam accusations keep coming! yea just keep telling yourself that, and MLG will become a scam -_-;;; seriously? you really think MLG is out to take your money? MLG would be long gone ago (they didn't start with SC2) if they were there just to scam you. Look at Sundance's body of work, they speak volumes about his committment to e-sports.

People who say PPV is the only way to grow esports seem highly uncreative. BW did fine for 10 years running non-profit. Hmmm... meh. BW was in no way not for profit. They just had a highly localized market which could be targetted effectively with advertising. With SC2 viewership being global, you can't really do the same thing. There are no hotpockets in my local supermarket, I have never held a can of NOS in my life (if I did I wouldn't drink it anyhow) and stride gum isn't something you find here either.

The majority of the audience is certainly at least aware of torrenting and the argument can definitely be made that said people feel entitled to free content. I simply intend not to watch it. Then again, I've never paid for a TV PPV sporting even. I don't pay for cable, and I just watch whatever is ad supported (like hulu, youtube, twitch.tv, etc). When there is nothing of interest on any of those, I read a book or play a game. My entertainment time is limited enough that it can be EASILY filled with things I don't have to pay extra for, so why would I?

I dare say, the only tournament at that level is the GSL right now and even then its debatable. MLG should be doing whatever makes the most business sense for them, and if they fail it will suck but it's likely that the scene is over saturated with tournaments at the moment and some will need to go under before things are sustainable. If that is MLG, then so be it. I believe MLG has the most compelling story lines of any tournament. This arena event, we have some absolutely amazing players from each region. I am far more interested in watching MLG than I am GSL. I'm still getting the best Koreans, but I also have the foreigner vs korean dynamic that we rarely see in GSL. Also its not on at 2 am. Its much easier to watch live, which is the best way of watching sc2. Also the streaming quality will be better than what GOM offers. GSL's free stream is a joke. NASL's 360p stream is as nice as GSL's hq stream. DH, IEM, Asus, HSC, they can't boast the Korean talent that MLG is offering here. GSL can't boast the foreign talent MLG is offering here. This is a premier product and event. Its gonna cost you some money. $20 for a weekend of entertainment is a damn good deal. You want eSports to grow? Well this is it.
