Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy??? Esports is all about technology and internet and all the comfort it brings, including vods, replays, and yes, free streams. Not buying, and I'm sure many won't too.

20$ for one weekend is too much, considering I don't think most people will watch everything. If it was 5$, or 10$, than it would be fine, and I would happily pay.
|
it might seem preposterous for some, but come on guys, it's just $20...it's the same price as going to the cinema or two pints in London lol.
For eSports to survive, it must have a sustainable business model, and covering all expenses from sponsors is not sustainable in the long term. Personally I think eSports enthusiasts should be happy that it is serious companies such as MLG and ESL that are asking for money, with the view of injecting it back to eSports. Both have won, or should have won, the loyalty of eSports enthusiasts, so let's give them something really small back, but which in essence helps a lot.

I'm happy to pay for it. The players are getting much better conditions and prize money this season so it stands to reason that the money has to come from somewhere. When you look at the player pool as well I cannot help but be extremely impressed by the qualifiers (which were free) ability to bring in the very best players in the world to compete over a weekend. To get 5 high quality streams for $20 featuring some of the sickest nerds on the planet is absolutely brilliant. I guess the other way to put it (for me) is that I want SC2 to be huge in North America and to have events like the Arena is a great idea. When you look at the player list I think it's arguable (probably even probable) that this event is more stacked than even Providence was last season. Also, not to mention the fact that the League will be able to create even better content (interviews etc) because of this event, it's all win to me.

Sorry I already spend A LOT on GSL.

But... Sundance has proven that he cares. And he has said before that if e-sports is to be successful as a business it can't keep leaking money with advertisements being the only stopper. Personally I'm fine with this. I would NOT have been fine with this if this was a year ago. Dallas was a terrible, TERRIBLE thing. But with the quality that MLG (and other tournaments) provide, I am more than willing to pay for it. 2011 was a test run for SC2 as a serious international e-sport and it widely surpassed pretty much everyone's expectations. It's time to pay the piper now and I'm sorry to those that don't understand that. I'll be enjoying watching this fantastic event without you guys I guess. I'll be right there with you buddy

As if competition for that weekend wasn't bad enough with Assembly going at the same time, with an equally stacked roster and caster lineup. This would bomb heavily even with a 5$ price. 20$? Yeah, good luck Sundance.

On February 14 2012 08:40 EagleShade wrote:Show nested quote +Out of intrest, how much does PPV cost for the viewers of boxing/MMA or whatever else? Typically in the $50 ish range depending on HD or not. That is for ONE event of about 3 hours with about 6 matches on it. I get why they are doing it. It makes since. The problem with this is when comparing this 3 day event with a 3 hour event is the idea of "being able to invite people over and pitch in for the cost." You can't do that for a 3 day event the way you can for a 3 hour event. "Hey, you guys wanna come over and watch MLG with me for 3 days? If we all pitch in, it'll be like $5 per person." ... I don't think so.
to be fair, mma/boxing and the like is much more limited in scope, there aren't fights happening every day for free that super-saturate the market
on any given day you can find several starcraft 2 tournaments running for free, and Gom produces a much-higher quality product with better players/casters/production than anything MLG has put out for a price that's much more reasonable--$20 for an entire months worth of two tournaments.
Also, the decision to not include this in the MLG gold package is kind of ridiculous. :c

But it seems you all live with your parents, or someone still pays for your shit. Wow fuck off. I'm in college right now studying my ass off at UT, and you're telling me that somebody pays for MY shit? I pay my own bills, my own rent, my own gas money, my own meal money thank you very much. To some people, money is slightly more important. I think YOU are the one who gets to have whatever you want. Why else would you drop $20 on a single weekend of videos like its nothing?

It's all about what you're asked to pay and what you SHOULD pay. Going to the cinema is really expensive but where's the alternative? The alternatives to high-level starcraft 2 are EVERYWHERE. If I was asked to pay a nickel every year for the air I breathe, I would be outraged. Not because it's expensive but because I shouldn't have to pay seeing all the alternatives. I'd stop paying GOM aswell if I thought their pricing went too high, not because I can't afford it but because it's not worth it. In what world is $20USD not a reasonable price for a weekend of high quality entertainment? The entitlement of people is unreal. There's a case to be made about whether MLG provides high quality entertainment but after their last few tournaments I don't know how you could think otherwise... In this world, where most sc2 is free, and the ones we're paying for provide us with the best players and infinity more hours of starcraft action. You wouldn't pay $20 for a steak if you could get a bigger, tastier one for less money.

I think I will just wait a week for the VODS. 20 bucks for what they are giving is almost not worth it. No say on replays distribution. Casters are still hidden. I doubt I will watch 5 streams at once. Plus I liked the commercial breaks in between matches. The cost for the event should be lower.

Hey, them pulling this dumb ass shit will at least prompt the pirating community to start ripping MLG. I know I'll be checking my torrent trackers. This sort of response is dumb. Maybe it's too much money. Maybe you shouldn't pay for it. That's perfectly unreasonable. But it's not an injustice. There's no moral argument to be made here, and they have the right to charge whatever they want. And you don't get to steal something just because you don't feel like paying what they're charging.

On February 14 2012 08:37 Angel_ wrote: Good luck on that. 20 for two days of MLG stream?
frankly. IPL 3 had more player content outside of just the tournament than any has before or since in sc2...and even then if it were only two days i wouldn't pay 20. i certainly won't to stare at red/blue mirrored stream for 3 hours past when it's supposed to be, with occasional completely unplanned spur of the moment player interviews, no panels, etc...and if i'm casually surprised and the dr pepper stream is just amazing maybe itll be amazing and sway me a little.
MLG pro circuit events =/= the upcoming arena. Obviously nobody but MLG knows what the actual content will be, but with only 32 players in a small studio, You can guarantee that the overall production will be much better than anything they have produced in the past.

3 days of games for 20 bucks, wheras ppv for boxing or ufc which is just one night can be anywhere around 70-80 dollars. if we really want to show we "care" and "support" esports, how is it possible to defend that statement if as a majority arent even motivated and passionate to flip 20 bucks for a tournament which has consistently proven to be entertaining and fun experience?
it could be that everyone is just REALLY poor (i mean no disposable income at all, which is unlikely) or no job, but it sounds more like just whining and complaining that not everything is free. we've been spoiled with all the high quality content that starcraft 2 has provided, i think its disappointing we cant shell out a few bucks for a cause that has brought us much joy over the past years.
I don't agree with this in any way, shape, or form.
https://buy.louisck.net/
Comedian Louis CK offered a 2 hour special on a website for $5 with absolutely no DRM. About a week later, he'd made $1,000,000. Clearly no one on the internet was willing to pay him, right?
What we have here are people who value their time and money making choices. Sure, it's only $20, but lots of things are only $20, and guess what, I don't buy most of them.
