I mean, for sure it can do that after refreshing the page and seeing how many votes he got from the last 'wave' but then it would be delayed in time, and this graph shows that it changes almost exactly as our graph at the same time, is it really possible without having an access to the actual site(poll?). It basically has an algorithm, which takes the growth in the last X Steps and then assumes how many votes are need to be in the lead in the end. I dont have alot of math experience (only a Chemist ;-) ), but this is how I would describe it...

The plot thickens. It's actually youtube, rigging their own vote to make it more exciting!

Still, for nerds to lose to this, it would be a little shameful, Internet is wider, after all.

Well this could just be an artifact from having the sampling done every 5 minutes. This way any delays would be missed since they would just be grouped together anyways. Say if the update was every 30 seconds or so.

Nerchio brings up a great point! If a bot was using our input to slightly outmatch us on every segment and mirror the entire graph, shouldn't it be slightly delayed from our graph? Unless YouTube is doing this, since they'd be the ones with OUR numbers in their hands as quickly as possible? The bot definitely wouldn't need 5 minutes to compile and vote.

My bet would be on YT being the (driving) force behind the dubious voting numbers.
