We are currently talking about this issue in the mod forum. We take this issue very seriously, and want to find the best way to serve those who want faster results, and those that don't wish to be spoiled. |
My take is that people who get upset over spoilers aren't going to actually lose interest of esports because of them.
On there other hand for people who come here because they play SC, but don't watch it, seeing something on the front page might catch their interest and eventually turn some people over to esports.
Then there's people like me, who I think the majority of fans would fall into, who are more "casual" and aren't really able to dedicate the time to keep up with every tournament. It would be nice for us to easily catch up with what is going on just by visiting a news page. It's probably easier than I make it out to be, but I pretty much gave up on trying to come here after a tournament and find the results, because it always seems to be buried in some thread I don't even bother anymore. It should be more accessible.
So I think the news page should be an actually news plag and become a once stop shop keep up with all things tournament. If people are concerned about it, they can set a bookmark straight to the forums.

I think its amazing we're always able to find out about results if we want to. If you really want to know the result you have LR threads AND liquidpedia. Part of my point is that LR thread are kinda anti-hype/anti-excitement/hard to use for newcomers and casual viewers.
In a ideal world, someone like my mother should be able to find tournaments results on TL without having to ask me where to go to. This could help to get more people/casual viewers hyped for the game.

Spoilers are silly. Like the overused sports comparison, it would be completely ridiculous to think of any sports coverage website or TV station to appease to keeping things hidden to those few who want to go onto their PVR to watch the taped game. They're in the business of reporting the on-going stories and results of their coverage and the majority of people want to know, or they would get viewership or page hits.
We're talking about seeing the results on the main page, much like going to ESPN or TSN. What most of us do on here is visit the various forums to discuss a multitude of topics. Rather than type "teamliquid.net," bookmark some specific forums that you frequent and you can bypass all the information on the initial page.
We're already a group of people who are typified as sheltered; cowering to spoilers over something that in the end doesn't matter, is just keeping that sheltered nature at the forefront. Let's grow up shall we?

As a personal side note, trying to find results on TL is quite annoying for such a vast and connected community portal. I have to try and find a thread and work down to a link that might show me brackets or may not. And to the person who earlier in the thread suggested something about the staff of TL being nothing compared to other sports websites, not only would that be somewhat false, but much lesser coverage sites have had consistent and up-to-the-minute results.

I think headlining epic victories in esports would be pretty cool, I am a full time student, have a job, and between life and everything else there is just not enough time to watch all the epic games that are going on. I think it would have been awesome to click on the homepage and see a headline with a picture of stephano after his IPL 3 showing. Sure it spoiled that he won, but i can now go look at the tournament and see how he won, look at his journey through the bracket. I can look at specific games and see how he beat certain opponents. I think its a great way to highlight there performance and bring for attention to the event as a whole. Sure its some what of a spoiler but in my opinion, seeing the winner is not really spoiling it for me, cause well I don't have the time to watch every game, and follow every event.
Regardless, if I want to find the results i can. It is not hard, I just think its cool to headline some awesome victories, and give credit to a players triumph in a different way. Just my 2 cents.

the only problem is that e-sports are hard to catch the results live sometimes due to some tournaments being played on NA timezones, some on KR timezones, and some on EU timezones.
Im not saying I am against seeing results placed on the front page, I am just trying to play devils advocate.

Ok how about this, during a big event like MLG or IPL have a thread on the community forum(so that it doesn't get buried) that's says something like [spoilers]MLG Disussion Thread.
Now it's on the front page,it's one click away and you don't even need to scroll down, now you are happy an I'm not spoiled!
Open the thread you have all the news abot the wiiner in the OP!

i think this should be spotlighted ^^

I think it directly is. To be honest it makes no sense, I've explained this to many people before in our channel. I don't wake up in the morning and look for GSL results for 2 hours because there is no where to find it, and no where u can go to search for it. (Obviously putting the live report threads aside - I'd like some immediate recaps and highlights.) There are obvious factors that go into this, like the OP said, there is no connection between one another and people yell at you if u want to talk about it.
|
Why does it have to be spoiling the live results? There are already threads and pages about it with live results and stuff, we don't need a big image on the front page ruining the match results.
If anything it should be flash and have big fat red bolded spoiler tags !!!
|
I'd say yes, but I fully understand people who wouldn't want it.

I feel like this would be a great addition. I generally try to watch the finals of most major foreign tournaments any way. But if I miss a great game I generally will go back and watch the VODs or replays. Why does it matter if you know the outcome of the game? You can turn an analytical eye towards why player X lost to player Y or why player why beat player X. And like the OP said I would love to see a big picture of a tournament champion holding up his trophy after he won on the front page

Why should a casual layman be excited about something he can't see? Seriously, decide whether the main page is for the NEWS or community. You cannot have it both ways without hurting the other.
The OMG I GOT SPOILED should bookmark the forums that they frequent so as to AVOID THE NEWS which includes the results. And news means something major happened... Seriously I did not give one fuck about IPL until I saw a thread on Strategy about ... Play that won him the title.
Until then, IPL was just another tournament etc.

Everything hurts eSports. Stop talk about eSports you're hurting it.

@OP: I was thinking about the same thing like one week ago and I totally agree with you. I personally don't care for spoilers, most of the time I watch events live or don't watch them at all. Watching a VOD just isn't doing it for me, even if I don't know the result. Watching and cheering for your favorite player and discussing about the games in the LR thread is what makes esports great for me.
I also love things like those nice interviews they had after TSL3 or the blogs about what happened behind the scene at IPL. For example, Stephano winning IPL against all the Koreans and all the other great great players and you come to TL the next morning and there is no hype, no interview, no pictures. You can only read trough some pages of the LR thread. That's somehow disappointing. In sports the hype before and after the games is half the fun. Sadly there isn't much hype after great events in esports because of this "no spoiler" nonsense.

Out of fear of being spoiled it would be as if I did not deserve to be on teamliquid because I missed an event to take care of real life issues.

Yes, we do. Until the event becomes an EVENT, no one who is intimately involved with the event will give a fuck about it. The Mass media has already done the research, hundreds of years of it. The findings are... You cannot build excitement of an event by hiding it.

People I want you to hear me out (read me out).
I am a daily StarCraft II follower. I never miss a tournament. I am here with the bad and the good. BUT!
There is one thing this community does not have, and the casual follower needs. Some sort of StarCraft II Scene Newspaper.
You click on the section SCII News and boom, all the recent events listed for everybody to check. You will say, hey, this already exists on the main page and calendar. No. It's confusing for a casual follower and it doesn't have all the info in one place.
I, a hard core follower, have a hard time going all around the internet to check all the news in the scene, and I often wish for one place to go and see EVERYTHING recent that happened. Am I the only one?
For now, Reddit has to stand the place for what I am looking for, because there is always the latest stuff. But it's made in a novice fanboism way. Imagine a professional website with all the news, interviews and links to recent games for people to go and check out BUT easy to access. Maybe one day.

Some say TL is a community site and not a news site. But news and community aren't 2 opposites. When you are hyped about something you want to share that excitement with others, with likeminded people, with the community, you want to read all about it.
I still remember when QXC beat IM with 4-0 in the GSL team league. I was so hyped, I immedeately went to TL to read pro's opinions about it, OMG a foreigner beating the best Korean team on his own. But, besides the coverage thread and a few posts in his fanpage.... nothing Next day.... nothing A week or so after, when all hype was over and I couldn't care less anymore, some "news" items about it popped up.

Saying "hurting esports" is hurting esports.
True, a lot of things are hurting esports nowadays, lol.
Seriously, I never thought this thread was serious, reserving judgment though.
Good read by the way. Thanks.
