Does that mean you understand the game enough to enjoy it? Probably not. And to be honest, that's the same level of understanding you'd get from any game. I understand that in American football there are two teams and a ball. This is not enough for me to enjoy it. You need to know more about SC2 than 'there are 2 armies' to enjoy it. While a fighting game or an fps game you can enjoy with very limited knowledge. ~ If they did this survey I'd bet money on the results being 1. Fighters. 2. FPS. 3. RTS. 4. Dota games. ~ Conclusion: It's more about games than genres. I'm so stoked that you guys are talking about this outside the show. I thought it was a pretty interesting discussion and would love to see a real life survey's results. I have to agree with you on your order of understanding. Keep in mind, I'm talking straight up some person who really doesn't know the concept of eSports. I think two people fighting instantly evokes understanding from boxing. FPS (specifically 1v1 like Quake) is hard to understand in a 3D space perspective, but easy to see aim, shoot, kill, score. RTS is like watching war, and while you might not understand everything, you can see what's left standing at the end. DOTA, without understanding, it's a very difficult genre to watch and appreciate.

Arena shooters may look easy to grasp on a base level but I think it's mostly a false level of understanding whereas an RTS is more intimidating at the start but it's not too complicated to comprehend the basics.

Wow, Rapha's analysis is so orgasmic to listen to. Observing the elegance of such high-level play is humbling.

Just looking at the prize money alone. Given a large portion is going to the final that's going to leave what, like 300k per region. Split across 3 tournaments. That's surely not game changing. As for viewership. People rant on about storylines and points, It makes a difference yes, but the storylines that draw people in is not based on points. And really this whole things sound like you'd have less international tournaments with big Korea-vs-West showdowns. (yes they're still allowed to do it, but the motivation seems less) And regional online tournaments, great for players, viewers in SC2 don't seem too attracted to it. Great to see Blizzard step up, but it sounds like what people are expecting the results to be is far more than it might be. ~ Also on Slashers final point. Valve should not do what LCS or Blizzard is doing. It amazes me that people keep on saying that companies are doing everything right because they are putting money into it. We don't know what the return is like. We don't know if it's sustainable. The only thing we do know, is if it's not, it will ruin those games. We can't look at LCS with 150k viewers when they're paying how much in salaries to players/casters and 2 production studios and say "this is the right way," because the viewer number alone doesn't answer that question. And I'm someone who watched Dota since before there were real tournaments, maybe that's why I care more about time being spent on developing tools for sustainability.
