Or play some music to help drown out his voice while retaining the ingame/background sounds.

Other than that I'd say they don't use the tabs enough. Production would be cool, and apm occasionally (especially since they were touting vibe's APM so much), units lost, plus the new interfaces blizzard put in would be nice to see.

on that same note.... SPONSORS??? make some money dammit. We're used to seeing that type of stuff in online gaming, and we're totally ok with it as it's the norm. ABUSE THAT. you need to work on presentations and overlays. seriously. I don't want to see the casters nonstop.... how about an overlay as they talk. watch a sports game, and notice how they show stats/starting lineups/trivia/leaderboards/standings/etc. you need that type of shit to make it look professional, and you're prerecorded, so it's doable. do practice casts.... i don't give a shit if it's bronze matches, practice your job this weekend. perfect it. you have so much untapped potential, it's depressing. get some theme music. game over music. background music. even flashing lights on the studio set. it sounds simple, but it will greatly enhance production value and viewing experience. the viewer should not feel ripped off just because a particular game was not exciting. have two specific jobs for casters... one to call action, one for strategy/commentary. Some casters are not good at one or the other. gretorp is terrible at calling action. the euro guy was great at it, but less so with the strategy. know what you're best at and stick to it. it's all about connecting the viewer to the action, and that's not an easy thing to do. you invested nearly half a million into prizes.... don't hesitate to throw down some money to make the experience count, or that half a million will be wasted. don't half-ass it. as of now this is a 1/2 million dollar production ran out of someone's basement. that's not going to cut it in the long run.

But the thing I still worry the most about is the casting, because I think there's an inherent flaw in the way the caster duo has been set up--and if that's not fixed, it's just gonna get awkward. I feel like Gretorp has untapped potential. When I listen to his analysis on a podcast, like the Gosucoaching podcasts he did for a little bit, or when I heard him coach and analyze on JP and Friends, I was super intrigued by his understanding of the game. When he's doing these NASL casts, it seems like he is opting for the wrong side of the Tastosis archon. He's trying to be the play-by-play, genuinely-excited-but-shallow-in-strategic-analysis Tasteless clone. Which doesn't make any sense to me. When I heard about the iNControl/Gretorp duo, I assumed that incontrol would be the excited/funny play-by-play guy, and Gretorp would be the sit-back and go "Hmmm" until he figures out the strategy arc of the match guy. Instead, Gretorp seems kind of forced into a feaux-Husky -- a Fusky, if you will. He's an obviously intelligent player trying to devolve into just another Youtube commentator--but without the quality of voice, the natural excitement of doing play-by-play, and charisma that successful commentators like Khaldor and Diggity have. He's not that kind of SC2 fan--he just isn't. But Gretorp obviously is excited about the games, because he's a SC2 pro. His excitement is more along the lines of "I'm intrigued by this strategy, because if you look at it this way..." When I heard him on podcasts, coaching, and even doing other commentating, I never questioned his excitement--but he wasn't yelling! He was speaking softly, but he was dropping some Artosis-sized nuggets of wisdom. He was just loving the game. And that's the kind of commentator that I love, and that NASL needs. I feel like he's shorting himself, and the rest of us, by having his real excitement for the game and understanding of strategy sit on the bench in favor of screaming whenever something almost/barely dies--and I don't think he wants to do that, either. A lot of it may just be nerves, trying to figure out casting in this high-profile tournament and knowing the pressure's on while being somewhat inexperienced with the general gig. I don't know why the casting duo is arranged the way that it is, but I feel very strongly that Gretorp needs to focus on strategic analysis and make InControl the play-by-play guy. It just doesn't work, otherwise. It's bearably fine so far, but NASL has a lot of games ahead, and unless they figure out this dynamic, it's going to shed viewers over time. I swear there's a genius analyst in Gretorp. It's just got to pop out of that forced-smile cocoon.

Diggity definitly should be hired full time, and if you're hurting on color commentary for the NASL look into Rise to bring on as a guest. Diggity with Rise has always been great. Back in the day Cholera and Rise rivaled (beat) even tastosis in hilarity and casting chemistry, and Diggity always made a great 3rd man for casting events like korean finals. Bring it back NASL! nothing against incontrol or gretorp, but I don't think they fit as fulltime casters even though I love what they do as players and on streams with chatter.

On that note, the fact that its pre-recorded makes it look less professional. In the GSL, when a chart comes on screen about the player in some capacity or shows the schedule for the week, the commentators can see that on their monitor and time their speech accordingly. As it stands, since its done in post there can be no communication between the caster and the overlay-operator (thats the technical term) which is what gives a production like this a flowing and structured feel. Instead, the editor has to interpret the timing as best he can. If the casters forget to mention sponsors, then what happens? In the GSL, tastosis can pick up cues live from the monitor, but I'm not even sure they have a monitor for the NASL. What would be the point with the way they are producing it? Its fine to record it in advance, but if you don't produce it live you can't really achieve that organic flow you want for a sports cast. You'll only be able to mimic good timing. Even with the language barrier and the fact that they have to wait on the korean commentators, the GSL has a much smoother feel for the audience. The NASL should be able to hit this out of the park on production value and they have the capacity to do so, especially if they have the luxury of filming in advance where they can do reshoots (for anything but the gameplay itself), and cut out long periods of downtime.

Other than working on flow with the casters, anything to improve the flow of the event would also be appreciated. I understand NASL works under different constraints than most tournaments/leagues, i.e. everything is streamed from pre-recorded material. I don't know how difficult it is to switch from one prerecorded video to the next, but 5 minute intermissions feel a little long. Would it be possible to simply setup a commercial on justin.tv (30 seconds) and be ready with the next segment by the end of it? However, there have been moments where iNcontroL got cut off (for me atleast) by an early commercial, so the timing would need to be worked on. Lastly, and I don't know how this could be achieved, but iNcontroL and Gretorp really need to be observing from the same in-game camera. You have two progamers trying to focus on constantly talking, catching everything, making interesting comments, bouncing off the partner's comment... it's really too much. And because of this we'll get moments where one caster notices something, but the camera is in a completely different place. I have 2 recommendations to help this issue. 1: I'd say when the game is actually played have one spectator in the game act as an active observer. Then when re-casted from the replay, both Gretorp and iNcontroL can set their camera to follow the perspective of that player and it'll auto follow what that person looked at. The 2nd option would be to have 1 screen between the two casters and then both commentate from the same screen. I hope at least some of my feedback helps. ![]()

Constructive criticism is always welcomed :-) I replied the following: You really seem to want to bring across excitement. And in that attempt you end up stressing every second syllable of what you are saying. When the moment does call for excitement, you do the same thing, just louder, and that becomes very stressful to listen to. There is nothing wrong in speaking in your normal talking voice while there is nothing exciting going on. I think your casting would be much better if you try to be as natural as possible. Sadly, the same advice holds true today, almost two months later. Gretorps casting abilities have not improved since then. Either he never got the lessons he was talking about or he doesn't find anything about his casting to be worthy of improvement. iNcontroL on the other hand is a really funny, natural guy. I think him and Diggity would be a perfect casting pair.

For the people wanting replays released. Are you joking? The min they release replays is the min EVERY youtube shoutcaster makes their own VODs of the replays. It's the worst idea ever for them and it will never happen. Please stop asking. They specifically wrote in the FAQ of their teaser website that they *will* release the replays for premium viewers, and that was one of the main reasons i planned on buying a ticket once they support paypal. I cant find it in the FAQ of their current page though, so I'll assume they changed their minds. Also, there are a lot big tournaments who do release their replays for free, and they don't seem to have problems with youtube casters re-casting their games.
