This NBA analogy doesn't make sense at all. NASL isn't a team league is it?
I'd like this this analogy to fit: "Hey I'm a great tennis player, can I play US Open?" "Uh, sure, but you have to play the qualifier and work your way up until you face seeded players because you are not known." But I don't really care as I don't know how many good players aren't "considered to be on a team".
Question: Did you check whether "NASL" is a trademark violation?

The league will be all about the players, and yes, he is a player, but he won't be the face of the league unless he ends up being far and wide the best player there is. LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are the ones you recognize when you hear talk about the NBA. Geoff might end up being the Charles Barkley (in the best way possible) of the NASL. He's hilarious, used to play at an extremely high level, etc. Geoff stated himself that his role in the NASL is to be the "face" of it. He handles stuff like announcements, interfacing with the public, and he will be the one in front of the mic most of the time.

I will be boycotting NASL until incontrol is no longer associated with them. I would bet 100,000 ESD on a PBU.

people have been screaming and salavating for this day to come..
nothing in this life is perfect i it never is so be glad its here now.. examples.. artwork... your school work.. your job.. ur relationships... even ur own body is not perfect and eventually fail all things even stars come to an end . soo make the best of it while u can.
for better or worse its here folks! no amount of bitching or whining will change that. be happy! things will turn out really good! and when the sponsors see that its loved they will be screaming to get on the bandwagon
p.s. incontrol is a very smart man and his casts are good.. he might not always be the prime face of the casters . maybe season two will have more day 9? or some other good caster.

I haven't been hoping for this for forever. I have a lot of concerns I'm hoping they'll address eventually--if they don't, nothing I can do about it. But we'll see how it goes? As it is, with their current tournament system, I'm indifferent about it, but obviously, I wouldn't hate to be proven wrong.

I can only assume his time he spent so far in helping NASL is free as well.
I know his animated high energy personality with his deep knowledge of the game is going be one of the main reasons why I watch NASL and I'm sure it will be enjoyable. NASL first season isn't going be perfect but Incontrol and everyone involved will work to improve it by ironing out technical and stylist issues.

I think what he does is great for the community, but everything you listed that he does he is either directly or indirectly profiting from. He makes money while streaming and SOTG is a fantastic platform to advertise yourself and your coaching. There might be casting jobs he's taken on that he didn't get paid for, but they were essentially to put on his resume for paying jobs (NASL official caster for example).
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great. I think he deserves everything he gets from this. However, to suggest it is all volunteer work that he's doing for everyone else is pretty naive.

After seeing the presentation and marketing of the NASL it has made me go from extremely excited to excited but nervous. Obviously NASL won't be like the showmatch and they've promised it will get better but it doesn't take much to get better than the complete disaster that was the showmatch.

Is there any difference between commentating live and just commentating on replays when you are going to delay the broadcast by a day? We aren't seeing the games live either way. People hate replays because it means that the game already occurred, it's over. If you are delaying the games anyway, why not just cast them from replays and be done with it. If there's no difference, why make a problem of the distinction? Well by mentioning they are commentating it live, they are making out like it's some fabulous feature, which it clearly isn't. They've even been capitalizing the word LIVE as if it's something amazing, when really it's no better than commentating on replays. In fact, they'd be better off just commentating on replays because then they wouldn't have to worry about delays and issues they could just record whenever they wanted. They are going out of their way to try and sell a meaningless "feature". Aren't you making this issue or possible antic more of an issue than it really is? What changes exactly besides your mindset? Do the games get better? Are the players supremely better if we watch them live? If we pray to them knowing they're playing as we're praying, do they receive some otherworldly benediction? If they play live and we cheer and chant their names into the starry night sky, will they feel our blessing? Will they feel our call for help, our need to see them succeed, to achieve the best of their abilities as we stare at the illuminated square of our monitor! Will they know that I am staring right at them, into their soul, feeling the pulse of their fingers as they apply several maneuvers in real-time as I glare at his opponent, hoping he/she will crumble at the idea and possibility that thousands of people are transmitting a vast hatred for that person, that player, that obstacle preventing my favourite player from succeeding! It sounds dumb when you put it that way, and maybe it is, on a rational level, but its still important to me. I get much less excited sitting down to watch the VOD of a game I missed from the GSL (even if it was going to be a huge epic game like Jinro vs Idra or something), than I do sitting down live knowing its going down right now. I watched the HuK code a games live and danced around my room when he won the first game. If it was a VOD I would not have. I can't explain it. But I guarantee you I'm far from alone in feeling this way.
I feel the same way, i was screaming and yelling and jumping around when julyzerg beat immvp, another important thing to note is that would not have been nearly as exciting if they were just playing through the internet, seeing the smile on july's face and watching immvp burrow his head into his arms is what its all about. So between the players not actually being there and them not broadcasting the games live it brings the excitement factor down immensely. If i had not watched July zerg Beat iMMVp live there is no way i would have had such a huge reaction to the game and it would not have been nearly as exciting to me.
Honestly its like telling ppl, whats the difference watching the superbowl live or not if you dont know the results? most people who miss the superbowl wont even watch it they will just watch highlights unless they are diehards.

It wasn't a disaster. It was, at most, below average.
Interviews, well casted games (if out of sync) and fun games to watch.

But there is no better way to do this than what NASL is currently proposing.
* You can't have all the US top players to move to LA full-time for playing in the NASL. Not feasible. So it has to be online. * Live commentating & broadcasting of previously played matches is worse than broadcasting previously live-commentated matches. * With some fake b.net IDs, results can be hidden from the community. So that should work.
NASL's current proposal is just the best of the lesser options, so I think they made a good choice.

This is more of a request than a question but can whoever's moderating the names to vote for accept Boxer & some other Korean players already? I know that votes don't exactly determine who's in there but Korean sc2 forums have already shown interest in the NASL & some players are even interested in showing up. It's hard to imagine they'd be considered without their names up there in the list.
Edit: Seems they were finally accepted a bit ago, nevermind my post~

Idea: I can't speak to the specifics of how this would work, but it would be really cool if the players who have a webcam used it, and that video was occasionally picture-in-pictured into the game. Much like many LAN tournaments do.
|
If iNcontrol wasn't involved in this would anyone take it seriously? Some random people popping out of nowhere announcing a 400k tournament. They probably have the money, but running something like this in a professional manner isn't easy. I don't know how many people here were brought into e-sports by SC2, but this is not the first time someone has announced tournaments on with this kind of money out of the blue, and it usually doesn't end well. I don't want to see this fail, but what they've shown so far looks just like some of the biggest disasters in western e-sports did when they were presented.

This is the key point for me as well. Is the broadcast system NASL plans on using perfect? No, of course not. A perfect system is impossible; I don't expect them to move 50 people (and their in-house teams) to CA for months to play in this. So, given the pros and cons of the realistic possibilities, their approach sounds like the best one to me.

Question:
If games are played online... what is your policy about having team members watch live while they play and give advice while watching their teammate play. I don't mean watching as in an game observer... i just mean standing behind them giving advice and watching the mini-map
Seems to me this is cheating too....
and certainly, since it does help the players alot, many will have people talking with them while they play the online NASL games.

Luckily, the only top player that may be excluded due to needing a team might be White-Ra. I suppose, though, that if they don't allow White-ra to play, there will be riots metaphorically equivalent to that in Egypt and Libya.
Liquid's 6th man might be in trouble as well. But I'm not sure if all Liquid players will even play. I know HuK said that he hates playing on the US server from Korea. So assuming all Liquid players that are in Korea stay there, it might be fairly easy for them to chose their 5.
On the other hand, what is the rule against splitting the team and having Liquid A and liquid B? Or perhaps a dichotomy between the Euro and NA players?
