You can have some guesses.
The top divisions tend to be Rank E, but that isn't a set rule at all.
You can also keep doing the math on the adjusted point of every diamond player you fight and notice for some tendencies. If they tend to be top 8 but you are only top 32, you are probably at a rank D-S, if it's the other wait around, you are F-E.
If you have enough time and try hard enough you can discover it I guess or at least have a good guess.
Last season I was Rank B Plat, this season I am not sure if I am rank A or S, probably S, but I ain't doing the math everytime, so I couldn't confirm yet. Diamond is obviously harder of corse, 7 ranks, but it's not impossible.

How do you calculate the adjusted point value?

Thanks Excal, I always wondered how the league placement worked, and what the bonus pool was used for. I can see that a lot of hard work was put into this, so well done, thanks again :D

So I lent my smurf to a Korean pro that's in plat, since then he has won roughly a bazillion games in a row. However he is still in plat playing masters players, should he lose a couple games to get a promotion?

Responded to your PM in greater detail. Short answer is no.

Is there some formula that gives how many points you will start off in your new league when you get promoted? Is it your adjusted points? Your adjusted points - the bonus pool total accumilation?
Also, if its mid season, can you ONLY get promoted on a won game? or is it possible to get promoted after a loss also. Thanks.

Yes, you only get promoted after a win. After a league change your points are reset to 73 + spent bonus pool.

Thank you for providing the PDF! :D
I wanted to double check that it has been updated with newer info in the thread? (Admittedly I'm being lazy and don't want to go through the whole thing, but this is something I'm always interested to learn more about)

Yeah, midway through Season 1 it was changed. That was where the whole "lose until you get promoted" thing originated.

Hey guys,is there a number of games i have to play before i get a promotion?I'm bronze league,i have 68% winrate this season(22/32),and 65% since i started keeping stats.
I assume that's good.I'm constantly playing against "slightly favored" and "favored" opponents.
So what do i have to do to get to Silver?Just play more games?Win more games?

i must say, excellent, excellent job at trying to decipher the MMR system. your efforts are astounding, and you amaze the community.

I hate that, the 73+pool. I started randoming and got demoted, no problem was expected. Then I put in like 150+ games until I was #1 with 100-200 points more than #3. After that I get promoted and have almost no points compared to what I would have if I had been in diamond the whole season.
Why can't they just have A POINT SYSTEM. Why does the math have to be different for someone who is promoted and someone who has been in the league the whole season. You just have no clue how good you are. The only thing you know is that you are probably better than the people who have played more games than you and have the same number of points. Except if they have been promoted LOL
Also if you want to get #1 in your league, just mass games. You will get there for sure. Only requirement 50.00001%+ win rate. Promotion not guaranteed ;-)

But that's not really how it works. Once you're in the new league, if your position in the league is lower than it should be based on your MMR, you'll earn extra points for wins and fewer for losses until you're in the spot that represents your MMR, assuming you're active enough to spend your bonus points.
The fact that you get more points when your point score is too low in relation to your MMR (and fewer points for wins when the point score is too high) is what makes people wind up in the right spot. Once you're promoted, you do have to play a number of games to wind up in equilibrium where you should be, but it doesn't take that long.
Also, note that in Diamond and below (at least) the top 10 or 20 people have all spent all their bonus points in most divisions, so they'll be ranked approximately according to their MMR, which is a flat-out measure of likelihood of winning games. (In Master and Grand Master, more than 10 or 20 players are likely to have been active enough to spend all their bonus points, so it's even more so.)

Is there a way to see how many points you need to get promoted? I've been facing primarily master players for the last 100~ games and Im just chilling at #1 with no promote

I have a question about how the point distribution works. Does the points gained have anything to do with the points you currently have/what league you are in? In WoW for example, if you had high MMR, but low rating, you'd always get much points from winning and lose little points from losing until your rating "catched up" with your MMR. Does it work like this in SC2? For example, if a player has top master MMR (facing only top master players), but has 0 points/rating, will he gain more points from winning against a player than he would lose points when losing to a high mmr player? I assume you get more from winning since otherwise you'd be able to stay low rating even with high MMR if you had 50% win rate?
I'm asking because I'm a diamond player who just met a master player back to back, I lost the first game and got -13 points, the next game I won and gained +12 points. I checked his match history and he had mostly met master players lately. My only conlusion is that I must have higher MMR than him since I lost more than I won, but since he's in a higher league (higher "rating"), shouldn't I gain a lot points for winning against master MMR players even if he has lower MMR than me? I'm rank 4 in my league atm, let's say I really wanted rank 1, how would I do that if I gain less points from winning than I lose from losing even against master players?
I'm really confused, I don't know if anyone understands what I just wrote :D If anyone does so and also happends to understand the MMR/rating system I'd appreciate some clarifications!

How do I make a thumbnail link btw? :o Image is too big to fit the page so I don't want to insert it.

Yes, in fact that's exactly what I described in my post three before yours.

No, because there's one MMR scale across all leagues. There's simply some overlap between the leagues.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm in bronze and I've won 50+ games now.. I started playing silvers last week and was winning each time.. Then I didn't play much over the weekend and all through the week I've been back to playing bronze players. Then today I played 1 Silver, beat him and then back to bronze.. Today I've played 15 games and lost 3 - beating players favourable to me.. Any help/explanation? Cheers for the help;..
