Modifying MPQ's has always been against the ToS, no doubt about that. Blizzard has stated several times in WoWs history, that they dont 'like' it.

However, Blizzards anti cheating tool, in this case warden. Cannot, will not, and has never looked or done anything towards file manipulation of MPQs, Warden scans the address space of SC2, WoW. Not the files.

What Blizzard did implement, and keeps 'patching' at times, for WoW to stop or somehow hinder MPQ changes, was a file called scan.dll. It sits inside your WoW directory, and whenever you delete the file, open wow it will redownload it. What it did, was search for MPQ manipulation, as soon as you opened the application(wow) it would pop up and give you this message

''Model edits has been detected, please repair or reinstall World of Warcraft'' this warning was as soon as you opened wow, BEFORE you logged in. No harm was done towards accounts, none banned or suspended, you simply just couldnt use WoW until the manipulated MPQ was removed from the directory. I see no reason why SC2 would be any different, Warden is the same in SC2 as WoW. No MPQ scanning tools is implemented for SC2 as of now, but i would expect the same thing if people found 'serious' ways of manipulating models, like making DTs visible and so on.

Either way, 99.9% sure this aint gonna harm no one, it never has.

UPDATE:

A little update on the whole WoW story.

Back when Blizzard implemented the scan.dll, someone created an application to run WoW from that bypassed the scan. So people once again could use model edits. Blizzard still never banned for it. Ever since Wrath of the Lich king, scan.dll started to have no effect on model edits, MPQ manipulation. No application was suddenly needed, just dropping an MPQ file within the /data folder succesfully changed a model, like this picture for SC2.

Ever since Wrath, nothing has been done to MPQ manipulation. I honestly think, Blizzard has stopped to care.
