wow I didn't even notice that. That's friggin dope. Chinese translations all seem pretty cool. What about the Korean ones. It seems a lot of it is transliterated. Btw I love the Chinese for baneling lol, and how all workers are called nongming aka farmers.

I'd hate to see the Korean translations... According to Artosis, Marauders are called Fire Bears in the Korean version. Though a lot of the Terran units and buildings have the literal Korean-English translation while others just use Konglish (i.e. Banshee -> 밴시 at least last time I saw it during a GSL tournament).

You do realize in Chinese culture although there is God of Thunder (雷公, as you mentioned before).
When its written in 雷神 Chinese people would immediately realize its not the Chinese version of God of Thunder. So I really don't get why are you so unsatisfied.

For the race translation, I actually think the SC1 translation was better.
Although the game is not translated into Chinese, the manual was and all the units/characters' names were translated.
Protoss -> 神民 (shorten for 神的子民, God's child; since Protoss was Xel'naga's first creation) instead of 神族 (Divine Race).
Zerg -> 異形; simply means "Alien" literal meaning in Chinese is abnormal being.
Terran is the same as SC2, just the human race.

First off, I'm Taiwanese (which is basically Chinese culture....but it's complicated), so yes, I do realize what the reference is.

Thing is, you have to actually use the lauguage to understand what I'm trying to say...it's like calling the Thor "Thundergod" in English....Do you really want that as a unit name?

In-game: "Oh look, it's a thundergod rush!" Just....no.......

And even though it's translated神民 everybody would just call them 神族 anyways

Again, it's not the priciple of the translating I'm against, it's just that some names when directly translated just don't sound that well in Chinese.

I am pretty sure High Templar is called 電兵 because of the ability Psi Storm looks like a storm of lightning.

I am Taiwanese-Canadian, but culture does not equal nationality anyway. I don't even know why you have to bring that up. 雷公 by all means come from Chinese myth, so thats why I addressed it as Chinese culture. I have no intention of calling you "Chinese" or what so ever by default. Note, East and Southeast Asia are all strongly influenced by traditional Chinese culture (some of them even practice similar tradition still...), it doesn't mean they are Chinese.

I don't think 索爾 (phonetic translation of Thor) sounded any better in Mandarin Chinese.
It simply lost the "Mighty" feeling in Chinese.
Thunder god does sound ridiculous in English, but its totally legit in Chinese.
Simply because in Western culture, Nordic/Greek/Roman gods were mainly referred by their name and not their title. People are familiar with the meaning behind these names. However, when you translate it for another culture, phonetic translation will lose these meanings.

To be honest with you, I think it will be even more retarded if Thor was translated into 索爾 because of the following scenario.

Teammate A: 靠, 他有十二隻索爾! (Damn, he has 12 Thors!)
Teammate B: 幹, 你魔獸玩太多喔! (Fuck, have you been playing too much WoW?)
P.S. Thrall is translated into 索爾 in Chinese by phonetic translation.

Again, I'm sorry if you misunderstood.

I brought up my ethnicity to ensure you I understand what you are trying to say of the culture.

And please, I already said it's not the nature of the translation I'm against, it's just the sound of it in Chinese is not all that appealing to me. It is a matter of preference anyways, so I can't understand why anyone is making a big fuss over it. It just sounds retarded to me, and I would prefer other translations, end of story.

The Chinese mainlanders would call you an elitist bourgeois pig if this was still 1960. Personally I don't care about whether it's simplified or traditional. I was raised in a mainland family so I learned simplified thus I stick with simplified, not because of some idealistic reason like aesthetics, but because over 1/6th of the world's population uses simplified and it's just more useful than traditional. Arguing that traditional is somehow better than simplified or vise versa is the same as arguing that Christianity is somehow better than Islam. Unless you made the active and informed decision to switch (switch religion switch language type) then you were probably raised using that language format (as I was with simplified), thus there is no reason to bash one language type over the other.

The reason I say this is because there has been a direct and diliberate evoulution to those words from their most ancient forms. This is not the same as a Islam, Christian conflict you are saying. The ancient Chinese characters were derived from pictures into words. Simplified Chinese loses a lot of the original meaning, and frankly doesn't make a lot of sense.

You must understand that throughout the history of Chinese culture, most stuff was written in a form that is traditional Chinese. China decided to use simplified Chinese for the reason of easier learning, but in doing so they have inadvertly made the Chinese people lose contact with their history.

I understand I may have been to harsh in my words, but it is mainly because many people don't think it's a big deal when actually it is. [/QUOTE]
I think more widespread literacy do help, even with these drawbacks. I think the benefits far outweighs the harm.

I do agree that 雷神 is not necessarily the best translation, but probably is the lesser of all evils atm.

It is hard to translate from one language to another because you have to consider the culture too. My opinion: the English names of sc2 units were chosen to be compact and catchy, the names might become too long in other languages. That is why all the shortenings and representations came in. Anyway, it is still fun to learn the names in different languages, maybe we could have a Korean/Japanese names thread as well?

By the way, you know what is the best way to resolve the traditional-simplified Chinese debates? Learn them both, I could read both.

Taiwanese are gonna get all poopie for that statement. Apparently Taiwanese is an ethnicity? My understanding is Chinese is the hierarchicing ethnicity and that Chinese and Taiwanese are Nationalities.

To be honest, most of the Taiwan/China bickering is exaggerated. Taiwan gets along pretty well with China these days, especially after President Ma was elected.

the houses comes from standard RTS terminology, things that give supply=houses, spans all RTS in chinese, saying 死神 is too badass is also saying reapers are too badass a name, cos you know...both refer to the grim reaper.

Yeah, I don't know why

I understand that it comes from the Grim Reaper...but somehow I don't connect to that when thinking in English

IMO the 死神 Reaper-Deathgod name is more suited to the Dark Templars.....it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the unit.

Well, it's blizzard employees who did the translation. I'm more than certain that when translating they took into the creative concept. It's a shame that the link between the Grim Reaper and that shadowy figure with a gigantic sickle reaping souls isn't easily made at times in Chinese terms.

Hi midnight...! Seen you on PPT a lot, didn't know you lurked in TL too.

Yeah, Chinese people like to use short cut names.

Your job just got a lot harder with the custom keys now

Lamo, it's actually PTT.
If wasn't TL, I will still be the noob cheese all the way to gold and BM on team game.
I actually never call the building or unite by their short cut. Maybe because I learn my commentary from the english cast.[

Taiwanese don't consider it an ethnicity, unless you're aboriginal. Which is why it's perfectly ok to call yourself a "hua ren."

I'm from Hong Kong before the end of the colony, nobody goes around saying "I'm an Hong Konger derpa derp."

I dunno, I've heard the term Honger fairly frequently amongst those from Vancouver, although usually from non-HKers to describe the HKers.
