Wow dude thanks for taking the time. You are awesome. Even if you used traditional 汉字

I've been loving the Chinese names since the first time I saw them. Completely badass -- good work by blizzard's Chinese team. ((Other than infestors = 感染虫。。that name is a little weak))

Now if only they could get the game approved by the authorities in the mainland..... It can't be that hard, just take the officials to a karaoke place, pay for some ((妓女)) fun times, and get them wasted...?? Then give them some expensive cigarettes? Thankfully Chinese people are independent minded and play anyway.

Ugh....

There is no way I'm going to use simplified characters

And if you are learning Chinese, Traditional is the way to go....Not the Communist China way

Simplified Chinese has way too many problems that I'm not even goin to go there.

When its written in 雷神 Chinese people would immediately realize its not the Chinese version of God of Thunder. So I really don't get why are you so unsatisfied.

For the race translation, I actually think the SC1 translation was better.
Although the game is not translated into Chinese, the manual was and all the units/characters' names were translated.
Protoss -> 神民 (shorten for 神的子民, God's child; since Protoss was Xel'naga's first creation) instead of 神族 (Divine Race).
Zerg -> 異形; simply means "Alien" literal meaning in Chinese is abnormal being.
Terran is the same as SC2, just the human race.

First off, I'm Taiwanese (which is basically Chinese culture....but it's complicated), so yes, I do realize what the reference is.

Thing is, you have to actually use the lauguage to understand what I'm trying to say...it's like calling the Thor "Thundergod" in English....Do you really want that as a unit name?

In-game: "Oh look, it's a thundergod rush!" Just....no.......

And even though it's translated神民 everybody would just call them 神族 anyways

Again, it's not the priciple of the translating I'm against, it's just that some names when directly translated just don't sound that well in Chinese.

@mavyric you definitely missed the mark with the Thor translation. And quite frankly I don't have a specific problem with translating Thor to a name. The point is it's an inferior translation due to the lack of an established imagery related to the name. Vikings when translated incur a Nordic reference, at least an exotic race, however, Thor does not

On a side note, don't you find a name-based translation for Thor sounds a lot like Thrall? Just saying

Edit: the reason why high templars are refered to as 电兵 is a reference to psionic storm. The storm animation is lightening, which is electric

They should've went for sth like 戰車 imo (even though there's apparently such a word and it means 'war chariot' but one could argue that in today's reality tank is equivalent to such a 'chariot'). There's no need to mimick everything phonetically imo.

I'm sorry but this just shows your complete ignorance to the word 坦克, the word was created quite a few decades ago to specifically refer to the battle vehicle. Translating tank as 战车 is goofy at best. Direct translation is far superior in describing the unit. Can you imaging people refer to a siege tank as chariots? *shudder*

What do you mean by 'direct translation'? I agree its far superior but in no way is 坦克 a 'translation'.
The reason I proposed 戰車 is because its a word that is actually used in Japanese (and Korean too I believe) to mean 'tank' and it makes complete sense (literary 'war vehicle').
戰車 is translated from Chinese to English as 'war charriot' because it's a word connected to ancient history. Nowadays the character 車 can mean vehicles of all sort so depending on the compound its used in it can be a train, a car, a bus etc.
I might be ignorant but I'm generally against phonetic renderings of words of foreign origin so I couldn't help it.

Again you're missing the point that this phonetic word in Chinese (sorry but Japanese and Korean are irrelevant) has been in existence and widely accepted as SPECIFICALLY REFERING to armoured vehicles served in a combat role, which happens to be...tank!
Why would you be calling tank a chariot if you can just call it tank and everybody gets it? It's a far inferior translation. I have no doubt that your proposal is absolutely great a century or so ago, but it's obsolete now.

I am pretty sure High Templar is called 電兵 because of the ability Psi Storm looks like a storm of lightning.

I am Taiwanese-Canadian, but culture does not equal nationality anyway. I don't even know why you have to bring that up. 雷公 by all means come from Chinese myth, so thats why I addressed it as Chinese culture. I have no intention of calling you "Chinese" or what so ever by default. Note, East and Southeast Asia are all strongly influenced by traditional Chinese culture (some of them even practice similar tradition still...), it doesn't mean they are Chinese.

I don't think 索爾 (phonetic translation of Thor) sounded any better in Mandarin Chinese.
It simply lost the "Mighty" feeling in Chinese.
Thunder god does sound ridiculous in English, but its totally legit in Chinese.
Simply because in Western culture, Nordic/Greek/Roman gods were mainly referred by their name and not their title. People are familiar with the meaning behind these names. However, when you translate it for another culture, phonetic translation will lose these meanings.

To be honest with you, I think it will be even more retarded if Thor was translated into 索爾 because of the following scenario.

Teammate A: 靠, 他有十二隻索爾! (Damn, he has 12 Thors!)
Teammate B: 幹, 你魔獸玩太多喔! (Fuck, have you been playing too much WoW?)
P.S. Thrall is translated into 索爾 in Chinese by phonetic translation.

What Revon is saying is that he would rather the Chinese government 50 years ago accepted 戰車 as the translation for tank because the characters are rationally related to the concept of tank, whereas 坦克 is just a phonetic rendering.

Obviously, today, tank should always be rendered as 坦克 because it has adopted is own semantic meaning of tank, despite the fact that the characters individually have nothing to do with the concept of tank

The Chinese mainlanders would call you an elitist bourgeois pig if this was still 1960. Personally I don't care about whether it's simplified or traditional. I was raised in a mainland family so I learned simplified thus I stick with simplified, not because of some idealistic reason like aesthetics, but because over 1/6th of the world's population uses simplified and it's just more useful than traditional. Arguing that traditional is somehow better than simplified or vise versa is the same as arguing that Christianity is somehow better than Islam. Unless you made the active and informed decision to switch (switch religion switch language type) then you were probably raised using that language format (as I was with simplified), thus there is no reason to bash one language type over the other.

I'm American so I don't have to deal with the phonetic translations, but I still hate them sometimes. The lack of final consonants (other than n and ng) and consonant clusters make it a nightmare to intelligently transliterate. For a name like Obama it is easy. For a word like Thrall you can get away with changing the Th to an S and the ll to an r, but even that is a stretch. Then you get to names like Rembrandt or Armstrong. Good luck with those. There is just no way to make it sound similar.

well, I am a Chinese caster. And the unite is a pain in the ass for me. Many of the official translation are coming from BW, where the community has given nick name to the unite where there is no translation. or they just use short cut such as DK, BS to refer the unite or building.

when I first start casting, I use official name but people just don't seems like it that way.
Due to the fact that all the unite are translated, so caster just temp to call it whatever the community please. Some caster just use the shortcut for the building, cause the building translation is really hard to remember or make impression. So we can see 雙bb開局(2rex opening), 他蓋了BT 在礦區旁邊(he build turret around the mineral line).

And for the thor, 雷神 direct translate is thunder god, seems pretty funny. But no one would think of thunder god when they hear 雷神. Would you think merry go around is a little girl go around?

Again, I'm sorry if you misunderstood.

I brought up my ethnicity to ensure you I understand what you are trying to say of the culture.

And please, I already said it's not the nature of the translation I'm against, it's just the sound of it in Chinese is not all that appealing to me. It is a matter of preference anyways, so I can't understand why anyone is making a big fuss over it. It just sounds retarded to me, and I would prefer other translations, end of story.

The reason I say this is because there has been a direct and diliberate evoulution to those words from their most ancient forms. This is not the same as a Islam, Christian conflict you are saying. The ancient Chinese characters were derived from pictures into words. Simplified Chinese loses a lot of the original meaning, and frankly doesn't make a lot of sense.

You must understand that throughout the history of Chinese culture, most stuff was written in a form that is traditional Chinese. China decided to use simplified Chinese for the reason of easier learning, but in doing so they have inadvertly made the Chinese people lose contact with their history.

I understand I may have been to harsh in my words, but it is mainly because many people don't think it's a big deal when actually it is.
