That's what I've heard too. Actually Hellion's nickname fire car actually means a train (like the locomotive kind) in Chinese.
Regarding the Ultra I've never actually heard them being referred to as Thunderbeast. I've only heard Niu (Cows) or Daxiang (Elephants).

It can also mean 'fiery chariot' which seems to be a term coming from buddhism. Literally it means 'fire vehicle'.

But actually, Thor does refer to the Norse god of thunder. It might not look like the god of thunder in chinese, but in norse mythology its quite simular.

I just want to point out that in the case of
Siege Tank the 坦克 is actually a loanword from English. It is just a transliteration of tank - tanke. So, even though it is difficult to establish new words in Chinese, if they are common enough (like tank) then it can happen.

Chinese names are very funny, you really should hear the player nicknames (especially korean sc1 players), they are just epic
many of the unit nicknames are based on its looks, characteristics or specialties, although chinese do use the official translations sometimes
e.g. in sc1, archon are called "white balls" and dark archons are called "red balls", what about science vessels? yep, they are "science balls"

死神 = reaper = grim reaper... not really that strange.
The Chinese->English is funnier than the Chinese itself, imo. "Flying corrupting bug" is funny, but 腐化飛蟲 is a fair name that'll prolly be abbreviated.

You do realize in Chinese culture although there is God of Thunder (雷公, as you mentioned before).
When its written in 雷神 Chinese people would immediately realize its not the Chinese version of God of Thunder. So I really don't get why are you so unsatisfied.
For the race translation, I actually think the SC1 translation was better.
Although the game is not translated into Chinese, the manual was and all the units/characters' names were translated.
Protoss -> 神民 (shorten for 神的子民, God's child; since Protoss was Xel'naga's first creation) instead of 神族 (Divine Race).
Zerg -> 異形; simply means "Alien" literal meaning in Chinese is abnormal being.
Terran is the same as SC2, just the human race.

Chinese speaking people won't get the reference if they have never specifically read Nordic mythology in Chinese. And quite frankly, the name sounds really bad. .
Uh, nobody would get the reference unless he or she was at least familiar with Norse mythology...this was a kind of silly thing to point out. If I haven't heard of something, I won't get the reference-- I believe that is true of almost every person who has ever existed. There are probably American players who don't know who Thor is.

I'm sorry but this just shows your complete ignorance to the word 坦克, the word was created quite a few decades ago to specifically refer to the battle vehicle. Translating tank as 战车 is goofy at best. Direct translation is far superior in describing the unit. Can you imaging people refer to a siege tank as chariots? *shudder*
