Just wanted to say a few things about chat channels. It is hard to believe that they are finally here (on test server) and they are beautiful. I'm not talking about their design or layout (it is nothing flashy), but simply what they achieve in their purpose.
I just got on the Public Test Server to try out infestors but I accidentally wandered into the Zerg Strategy room. Everyone was courteous and giving each other help on ZvT, ZvP, and ZvZ. Then, a bunch of us spontaneously made a channel called Broski and we started have 1v1 and 2v2 obs show matches! We never met online at all but everyone seemed to instantly come together and have games and discussion. I simply asked if people wanted to obs some games and give tips afterwards and everyone jumped in! Needless, to say the rooms were full and it is STILL going on right now.
It was so easy to get a whole bunch of people to join games for obs and discussion. So simple. Can't wait when they fix the bugs and this thing hits the main servers.
Blizzard should have done this earlier...battle.net has never felt more connected. Well better late then never right? Thanks Blizzard you stubborn #(*$))!% =P
Major issue, blizzard seem to control all public channels, there appears to be noway to moderate them, the "slow" mode is a bit overkill and it seems like theres noway to protect private channels, so if someone knows they name they can join it.

So it doesnt look that good to me

Gentlemen, I am not arguing about the bugs or the slow mode (I hate it as well) but rather the purpose and existence of chat channels. Finally, the entire SC2 community is easily able to convene online in real time instant messaging. It is the freedom to convene, gather, discuss, organize games, meet new players, etc that makes chat channels so great.

I thought a discussion forum was about discussion :o
I agree its a good principle, but its been done really half assed
That is so good to hear. Finally the game is like an actual community again. Reminds me Warcraft III days again, meeting cool people and having some good discussions spontaneously. Someone will have to define some TL channels?
As a side note, I'm so mad I have to wait 3 weeks to replace my broken laptop before I can get back on bnet!!
im decently satisfied with it. Battle.net 2.0 was unbelievably disconnected before.
My only gripe is the limit on how many lines you can type. Most spam bots can get their point across in three lines anyway I'm not sure what the purpose of it is.
It's hard to believe that Blizzard didn't see that implementing Chat Channels from the start would have these benefits especially considering witnessing the 12 years of SC1 Chat Channels.
I just watched the discussion that Chris Sigaty and Greg Canassa had with people at Blizzcon 2010 (I know I'm ages behind.)
But after watching those videos, it made me realize how silly their priorities were when they were prepping the product for release. I'm not sure I understand their thought process when they didn't realize that not having chat channels would create this tumultuous response or that they didn't have it at the top of their features to add ASAP after release >_<
I think my biggest gripe about the chat channels is that they aren't a place to 'hang out' essentially like they are in Bnet1.0. There isn't any type of channel admin stuff going on or any type of clan support. When I entered a popular channel in Warcraft 3 it was really cool because the clan members and stuff would be immediately visible and it just felt like a cool place to hang out.
So far the chat channels seem like a live version of these forums in small windows in game. What I think we were all hoping for was a chat that got an entirely new interface within Bnet2.0. I was hoping for a button like single or mutliplayer on the top of the screen somewhere that led to that type of interface. I wanted to /join clan teamliquid or /join clan root and have certain atmospheres within each channel. |
Now all they have to add is the ability to make game names and passwords so we don't have to add 100s of people to our Friends list to make custom 1v1s...
Thank all that is StarCraft.. Bnet took a step in the right direction finally.. It's been awhile. Slow mode sounds pretty weak though, although it's there to cut down spam, Bnet1.0 kicked you if you spammed too much.. So I don't see why that wouldn't work here.
So once Blizzard 'maintains' the Chat Channels, what will TL be doing officially? Because luckily I manged to get on the teamliquid today, but it maxed at 100 almost instantly. Will there be a TL1, TL2, TL3 system?
Its a little irksome that it's 2010 and ~6 months after release and the chat system we're getting is still flawed in so many ways that have been pointed out in this thread.
I am amused that everybody is still complaining like how blizzard sucks since they didnt do it "perfectly."
hey man, at least they are listening to us, and they will fix whatever is wrong in due time. also, chat channels had a limit in BW and noone complained about that.
I can't believe how big of a fail these chat channels are. Private chat channels already exists in battle.net 1.1. In 1.2, they are the same exact thing plus a shitty "slow mode" that makes communication impossible. This is the biggest letdown ever.

At first I was really happy that chat channels were finally here, logged on PTR to try it out and got turned around quite fast. The chat channels are so poorly implemented in their current state that I'm fairly sure it's just a trolling attempt from Blizzard, even if we disregard the fact that we've waited like a year for it and imagine they've spent five days working on it, I'd still call it underwhelming :p
haha! I was in broski also for a bit! I watched a 2v2 for a while then asked in zerg strategy if anyone wanted to play a friendly 1v1. I got into contact with a diamond zerg player who was around my level and we just played 4 games straight. I got to try out some different openings and then discuss the MU at the end.
Battle.net was lacking these chat channels so bad!! SC2 for me has been such a lonely experience so far and I'm really glad that the chat channels have finally arrived. Although what's up with the limit on messages in a private party?? I know they're worried about spam, but c'mon that's just ridiculous.

YAY! They're listening! It only took them almost a year. ;p
Are those channels any different from the WC3 ones? They claimed their new chat system to be revolutionary and said they won't release it until it's much better than the previous incarnation from WC3.
So is it any better? Is it even at least as good as chat channels in Age of series or HoN?
I don't think having no moderation privileges in private channels is an issue, as that was how it was for WC3 and things were fine. There were virtually infinite possible channels in WC3 so if people joined yours... you could simply move. There was no way for them to know where you went unless they were on your friends list... and if they are harassing you when you don't want them to... maybe you should just take them off your friends list?
Nevertheless, I do understand there are some situations where it might be necessary such as a popular private channel... perhaps one called "Team Liquid" where spammers may roam free, or simply if you don't want to have to remove an annoying friend who can't stop joining your channel when you are talking to someone, but overall... it's not TOO bad. It's a shame they can't just cover all the bases when working on Bnet 2.0, but I guess this is a step in the right direction.
On a side note, if you have used the channels are the windows as small as shown in the patch notes thread? They were about the size of two chat boxes... which is ridiculously small as I was hoping to have a tab at the top left corner (similar to how you click on multiplayer) to go to a chat section, as well as have support on the bottom bar if desired. If they are that small, can they be maximized? Regardless of the answer to that, why do they always insist on making such large portraits for SC2 when they clearly make the interface far too cluttered. The custom game lobby is already bad enough.
Overall I am happy, but I am sure I will find some disappointing things because the best and brightest at Blizzard can't use common sense and make an intuitive interface.
Well, I just got off teamliquid after meeting several cool dudes of varying skill levels, we all played, learned and 'lol'd' together and had a good time in general.
I'll definitely be doing it tomorrow. See you there guys.

It's a little irksome that people dont seem to get the whole purpose with testing and the current state of chat channels is probably not what we'll end up with(since it's a test to see what works and what doesnt).

Yea that screenshot is not at all as what I was expecting. I think the general consensus at least in this thread is the wc3 style is wanted. Random plug for mamak west!
Well, the OP states the obvious, 100% correct - I can only speak from my wc3 experience since PTR isn't available for Europe but the only one ever denying the importance of chat-channels was Blizz.
Still the layout seems weak, Blizz has some way ahead of them to get to the standard they've already reached with wc3 (...ludicrous in itself...)
Just spent about 3 hours on the teamliquid channel. Spec'd some nice games, a few not so great. This is wonderful, this is what sc2 really needed. People have a place to go and play, with spectators watching their every move. The pressure is on and you have a relevant place to play a game or two. If you aren't playing, you get to discuss live matches any time you want. Wow! Where was this feature? I welcome 1998, this is so fucking good.
But my question is do you get kicked for idling to long? personally I liked that about BW. But with these limits good luck getting into teamliquid channel with 93 people afk. And slow mode is a crock of shit.
It's nice to have some human interaction in between games. I think it was one of the main things slowing down how often I laddered. SC2 felt so lonely. You were alone staring at a screen, then you were alone playing against someone else, then you were alone again. Chat channels are gonna really spice up the community, and it reminds me of BW <3
it looks like a group chat more than a big chat room ( or a lobby etc ). Not bad but at the moment it looks far from what players expected. 100 person limit is waaay too low.
This has nothing over playing in Windowed Mode ( Fullscreen) and have a TL Irc at the background

The PTR patch is aimed to hit live servers before the end of the year, it's a little irksome that people think the patch will change a lot for live when it's most likely getting released within weeks. (Exactly what people said back in beta whenever someone had some negative feedback, "BUT IT'S JUST BETA, HALF OF BNET IS PROBABLY TURNED OFF SO THATS WHY ITS SHIT", etc..)

Well the thing is , when you're a BIG BIG company , you don't code for a few hours at night then wake up early in the morning and decide for an Open Beta Test. If this is what they ask you to test , this is %99 of what you'll get in full release.
i'm not going to do the patch region thing, but i like the idea, if its done properly, meaning that its fairly secure and maybe they add passwords to the private channels for some protection.
May just be me, but these chat channels are horrible. Not only is the design layout bad you flood after typing two words, literally. Is there some reason they can't do the same system as every other game because those were perfectly fine...
I cannot test the chat as im not on the NA server but this slow thing doesn't seem like a big problem. I assume it means if you spam you get blocked for a bit. From the comments thus far it seems to cut you off far to soon. But that seems like an easy fix. just adjust the values, they could easily do that before release. I mean who wants the chat channels to be spammed to death? It seems a good feature that just needs to be worked on a bit. This is a test after all, just make your voices heard and im sure things will get done at blizzards leisurely pace.
This will reinvigorate new life into Starcraft, for sure.
Though this is extremely obvious, but the Starcraft community isn't as active as it was a few months ago. You look at most leagues below diamond; and most of the time everything below rank50 is inactive or only plays custom games. Chat channels will be a great asset to counter this.
Seriously, it's fucking retarded that they haven't included this at launch. It still pisses me off when I think about it.
Yeah with a few fixes by Blizzard I think chat channels will be an awesome addition to SC2 that everyone will enjoy regardless of skill levels. It is so helpful in uniting the community which is really what made BW what it is today. Without the community Brood War would've just been another game that never reached its' potential.
Like other people pointed out there needs to be some sort of moderation for private channels, and public channels could be a little less moderated :p but once all the kinks get worked out I think it will be awesome.
Thanks for sharing your story about getting those obs games going and what not because honestly after about 30 minutes in the 'teamliquid' channel last night I didn't have the best feeling about chat channels... Pretty much the forums in real time with no moderation and more trolls.
Cant wait to get these Chat channels! None of my friends plays SC2 (unable to persuade them) so everytime I leave our LoL-Group to play some SC2 I am complete lonely :<
Granted I would like options (slow mode is grrrr), but BNet no longer feels lonely! Within minutes of hopping on, I was playing and obs-ing games with fellow liquidians on 'teamliquid' chat.
This is why we want chat, now we have a real community!

well people are just used to having bots saying things and having chat commands..

You can actually add people to the your game right from the chat channel window, which will be incredibly handy.

Didn't that require mule accounts? I don't think people are gonna dish out $60 per bot just to spam a chat channel.
They just added channel topics it looks like. I look forward to the new stuff they'll be adding.
you know like....that's not the real morrow, right?
He's a very good impersonator then. Cause he owned one of the people who is top 50 in NA in one of the other games. (Maybe jsut some random top 50 zerg pretending to be morrow).
so in the chnl named "broski" did you guys talk about how "my life is bro" and how you just got done w/ a LAX game/practice and going to slam some natty ices while bitches make you sandwitches in the kitchen? all kidding asside, sounds pretty cool - when chat chnls come out for NA sc2 i will be hosting the hottest chnl evar, can't share name tho.
While I think it is cool to be able to join multiple channels (and I believe also stay in one when you join a game) there is the down side of having too many people in a channel who aren't even paying attention to it (only an issue for popular channels).
On December 05 2010 10:21 SpoR wrote: There is a channel teamliquid which is full, so people are starting to fill up teamliquid2 as well. After that teamliquid3 and so on.
Well if that was a response to me... you are just proving my point. While it is obvious you can simply go to another channel, the problem is with things the way they are... the channels will be filled with people ignoring that specific channel or in a game. I really don't think it is a big deal, in fact I don't even know what my overall opinion is of it... I simply pointed out something that might get a bit annoying.
Personally i love the chat channels, how ever a few things i hate. Notifications when someone talks.. In IM's you cant hit the tab on the side to add them to friends or invite... Seemingly impossible to find the widen arrow. And i HATE the anti spam.. Needs to be more leniant.
