I just seen this,
On Thursday, June 10, a new StarCraft II TV spot featuring never-before-seen cinematic footage will air during the second quarter of game four of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Lakers. The thirty-second spot features voice-overs from two iconic characters in StarCraft II, and is cut from the pre-rendered cinematic sequences found throughout the game. Check it out during the ABC broadcast beginning this Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern or 6 p.m. Pacific time.
been watching the series so far and its good to know this so that i dont like go for a bag of chips during commercials or something. Better yet, i will record it.
I could definitely be completely wrong, but I suspect ActivisionBlizzard is reaching out to a wider audience as a reaction to the core fans outrage over bnet 2.0.

You would both be wrong.
The game industry has been aiming for wide audiences for several years now. World of Warcraft in particular is the biggest example of Blizzard expanding their games to include non-gamers and casuals into the mix. It was easily decided long before any of the Bnet controversy that SC2 would try to appeal to all kinds of gamers.
But even then that's not completely true as Blizzard games have all been casual-friendly since day one, even SC1. A game doesn't have to only choose either hardcore or casual.

Not to sound elitist but I hate when game company's try to branch out to a new, and usually completely unrelated market...

I felt the same way(well at least the part about most basketball fans not caring about starcraft anyways), when I first read this story, but because they are trying to branch out. I assume they'll be showing a wicked sweet CG trailer not gameplay footage and that is good for all anyways.
I could definitely be completely wrong, but I suspect ActivisionBlizzard is reaching out to a wider audience as a reaction to the core fans outrage over bnet 2.0.
They're reaching out to a wider audience in order to increase the public profile of the game, in order to get more customers, in order to make more money. I'm about 98% sure they would do it whether or not some fans were or were not happy about the current state of Bnet.
So... this is how they "address" the b.net issues?
No, of course not. This is how they advertise to a mainstream audience in order to get more sales and increase the profile of the game. Increasing the mainstream profile of the game is a great aid and necessary requisite to e-sports growth, as it draws viewers in and gives e-sports a space in which to exist and grow.
This event has absolutely nothing to do with the overblown fan flack about Bnet. Blizzard will address the concerns by actually addressing the concerns, either by changing things or by explaining why they won't change things. And it really annoys me that some fans insist on seeing every single thought and action on Blizzard's part as part of some grand, overarching conspiracy of Evil Corporate Evilness directed against them personally.
But please: We already have plenty of threads on Bnet. That's not what this thread is about. Let's get back on topic here...
I can completely understand this target market. I'll speak from my experiences, but take it with a grain of salt because most of my friends are engineering students... and as such might not be entirely representative of everyone else.
What my friends classify as is gamers who fall into the "frat-boy gamer" category. That is, the kind that sticks to MW2 and Halo3 and Madden. The kind who play casually, yet passionately (they all think they're pro-level gamers). The key point here is although they stick to those games, almost all of them know what the original Starcraft is. But not all of them know that Starcraft2 is being released in a month.
Now, from the sample I have available I'll say that 60% of them will be watching the Celtics crush the Lakers tomorrow (yeah, I said it). Many of them will find out for the first time that SC2 exists, and start to talk about it in anticipation.
I stand by the fact that this ad isn't intended to bring people who are unfamiliar with the series into stomping noobs on iccup, it's to revitalize the portion of their old market which might not be aware of the upcoming launch.

Are you seriously suggesting that Blizzard made a full length commercial in two weeks and released it in the NBA finals due to some fan reaction to a minor interview that expressed no new information?
....
Srsly bro? Some of you people are incredibly detached from reality. This isn't how companies are run, even if all they care about is money, let alone game studios.
Its just a fucking ad to raise awareness and make some people think omg coolio space marines.
I'm seriously pretty tired of people looking at every single freakin thing blizzard does as part of some vast conspiracy against esports.
I could definitely be completely wrong, but I suspect ActivisionBlizzard is reaching out to a wider audience as a reaction to the core fans outrage over bnet 2.0.
Or they could just be advertising because they're trying to make SC2 a HUGE game and the posterboy for esports so they get a substantial return on their investment.
I think if they just focused on the Game... the rest would take care of itself. WoW took care of itself, and only AFTER it had made a name for itself as an enjoyable game, did they start to commercialize it and water it down.
Looks like they are going for the latter, first with SC2. Game still played fun IMO... but I don't think its going to appeal to EA-Basketball sports games fans.
LOL@ the people who think that this is Blizzard reacting to the people crying... LOL@ the people who think that this is Activision squeezing money out of the game... LOL@ the people who think that this is anything other than an ad for a video game.
So many deluded conspiracy theorists with the gigantic opinions of themselves... Blizz has been releasing commercials for their games long before Activision got involved. These commercials have been placed appropriately in order to achieve a strong audience. They have most likely got demographics showing that their target audience enjoys basketball. ALSO, this is very smart of them, because this is advertises it to people who like to watch games (pushing it as an esport). And let's face it... if people will watch basketball, they will watch ANYTHING... DEFINITELY SC2.
I cannot believe the attitudes of some people to actually think that this is Blizz going OSHIT the people at teamliquid are mad at us. This is VITAL! QUICK GET MORE CUSTOMERS OR WE ARE SCREWED. Seriously, the number of people pissed off are not as high as people think it is, and the current hardcore crowd is not as big and important to the release of the game as you may think it is.
I saw final fantasy XIII sponsoring a basketball game on ESPN awhile ago as well Still confused; any fan of final fantasy isn't going to be discovering that final fantasy has another game coming out through an espn commercial
I think games would be better advertised on the sci fi channel or spike TV perhaps (spike has a couple nerdy shows, like game reviews) perhaps adult swim, but obviously I assume these advertisers know what they're doing

And this is why you are confused, FANS of final fantasy already KNOW it's coming out, they are advertising it for potential new customers!
On that note, TeamLiquid has a lot of anti-business hippies that post often.
Apparently it costs $500,000 for 30 seconds of air time during the NBA finals. 1 million for a minuet. I could buy house (in Australia) for that kind of money. o_o

Right, it didn't do anything for WoW? Come on, you can NOT be serious? The reason WoW is doing so great is because they managed to tap new resources.
For a true E-sport they have to go for a more mainstream audience.

Surely there'll be a huge number of college kids with loads of spare money and time watching the game? Seems like the perfect audience to advertise a video game...
Haha if you don't like basketball you don't have to watch just for this, just keep playing video games or whatever the hell you're into. The game + SC2 commercial should be good =)

yeah i really love cutscenes by blizzard. if only all the cutscenes in game could be pre-rendered like this
I did some frame by frames. Looks like Kerrigan can shoot blue energy from her hands (about 00:13). Jimmy gets a revolver-pistol thing (near the end) and it's possible Zeratul actually cuts one of Kerrigan's arms off (final shot of them fighting in the quickfire slew at the end), it's really hard to see though.
Looks really awesome though, I recommend going through the Kerrigan shooting at the Zergling bit. Beautiful.
The CGIs make it look like a shooter, which is smart for advertising to a huge audience. Mengsk though was a pretty bad decision for the voice. His pronounciations hurt my ears, as it seems like they were going for a bad new englander accent with him, like most tv politicians. So yea coming from Boston myself it sounds lame, and that's pretty bad considering Celtics are playing, because I won't be alone in that opinion. CGIs might save it though.

She is Kerrigan when Mengsk betray and leave her in New Gettysburg.
Couple of reasons. They want it to be an "event", and they probably want people to see it for the first time in high quality, not as a leaked youtube video.
It's an okay commercial; not nearly as good as the full sketched clip, but still interesting. mengsk's voice is a bit distorted at time. It lacked a bit of mystery, most of it was flashing clips.
You can still find it on Youtube if you do a search.
What if the REAL conspiracy is that the NBA is paying Blizzard to show this commercial during the game to get us to watch more basketball!?!?! Makes you think, eh?
Funny how no one actually stated why commercials work. Only things like, "omggg sc2 during NBA why blizz so dumb?" Please...psych 101 or any marketing class teaches you that commercials aren't there to make people buy it, but for people to recognize the product faster. If people can even remember that sc2 had a commercial, that's good advertising. Anyway, all good for more people in the Starcraft community, opens up possibilities of wider ladder brackets for us to demolish.
Just saw it on YT and got to say even though it is really short, it really blows you away in regard to the quality of the cinematics. Like holy shit. The Raynor shot and the second scene with the hydra (with the rocks/debris) really stand out in my mind. Basically shows nothing that revolves around multi-player, but really gets you hyped for the single player though, imo.
On June 11 2010 09:41 whiteLotus wrote: sorry guys i dont follow, but who the hell is Nova?
She was the female ghost who was to be the main character for Starcraft Ghost. Don't think shes in this trailer - the girl you see is Kerrigan before she got owned by zerg.
November Annabella Terra, normally known by her codename Nova, is a ghost agent for the Terran Dominion, and the protagonist of the StarCraft: Ghost sub-series. Despite the indefinite postponement of the Ghost game, her character still continues through StarCraft Ghost: Nova, a novel covering Nova's early life that was meant to accompany the game's release.
According to StarCraft Ghost: Nova, Nova is the daughter of one of the highly influential Confederate Old Families, and despite having unusually high psionic potential her father is able to prevent her from being taken into the Confederate Ghost Program. However, after her family is murdered by an anti-Confederate resistance movement, Nova flees to the undercity of Tarsonis and is forced to work for an organized crime boss who wants to utilize her psionic powers for his ends. During the Zerg assault on Tarsonis at the end of StarCraft's Episode I, a Confederate wrangler eventually tracks her down and is able to get her off the planet, inadvertently ending up in the Sons of Korhal fleet. As a result, Nova voluntarily trains as a Dominion ghost agent and has her memory wiped to remove the reminders of her family's murder and her involvement with the Tarsonis underworld.
Due to the postponement of the StarCraft: Ghost game, Nova has not been featured in any media since. However, it has been speculated that Nova may have a role in StarCraft II as her armour discreetly appears in concept art depicting Arcturus Mengsk. At Blizzcon in August 2007, Blizzard Entertainment claimed that if there was a role for Nova in the game, she would appear, but she would not be in the game just for the sake of being in it.
At the 2009 BlizzCon, Dustin Browder, the lead designer of StarCraft II, confirmed that Nova would definitely make an appearance in StarCraft II. However, he did not reveal to what extent the character's role will be in the game's story events.[

I really like that they just decided to go with cinematics. I think that someone who didn't know about the game would be a lot more apt to look into it with a commercial like this than one that just showed someone clicking and pressing buttons.

Once ad has been aired, then youtube is a nice tool to spread the trailer and still create and maintain hype and excitement
Id assume because they dont want the views to be given to random users. Activision wants the trailers under their youtube channels to get paid by their sponsors everytime someone watches.

Zeratul hits Kerrigan, right?
Both characters trade blows--Kerrigan scores a hit on Zeratul, causing him to hold his arm (just as he does when he meets Raynor), while the Protoss manages to slice off one of her wings. Rather than retaliate, Kerrigan casually regrows her severed wing and calmly explains that the unavoidable end of the universe is coming. She then departs. Zeratul vows to find some way to avoid the culmination of the prophecy and climbs to safety. This ended our single-player experience with the game but also introduced many new questions, such as exactly what sort of prophesied end of the universe is coming, and how, as Zeratul suggests, Kerrigan represents the only hope of avoiding that terrible fate.

Its just his accent. Nothing wrong with that.
There is something wrong with it considering it's supposed to be a New England accent (bad one), and a large portion of fans watching it are from Boston. So it's annoying, but yea other than that it's good. Too bad for Blizzard though Celtics made the finals.
I honestly don't think that anyone would notice or cares. 98% of people watching the NBA finals don't know he's supposed to have a New England accent, so chill.

sorry but I am going to say 99.6%
still to low considering most people who play SC dont even know that im gonna go with > 99.9%
that.... looks strangely familiar. The ghost is kerrigan, and it looks exactly like a comic storyboard I've seen of her final moments when she gets abandoned by mensk. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about/where that comic is?

This is the storyboard for the cinematic "New Gettysburg". I don't know where you can find it; I'm just such a huge nerd that I know that.

some one posted the storyboard video a few pages back

It's not supposed to be a New England accent. It's Arcturus Mengsk, and it's supposed to be a high-class Southern accent (a la the "genteel" Southern aristocracy). Big difference.

exactly
he didn't do a very good job though, I felt like he coulda done much better
See, I know the cinematic team is not the Bnet2 team, but I can't help but think Blizzard will make Bnet 2 amazing in the long run after watching that. Definitely top notch material, better than Avatar crap, and will hopefully lead to lots more fans of SC.
I wonder how much money Blizzard blows on their Cinematics team... I mean... they basically have another Pixar Studios running just for their cinematics.

And I'm grateful. I've always loved Blizzard cinematics.

I know people who buy Blizzard games due in large part for the cinematics.
I got lucky and switched to ABC (I had completely forgotten about this) and bam, 2nd quarter and there goes the ad. Even though at first i thought it was a trailer for Lost planet or something.. Wasn't really impressive itself but seeing something related to SC on national TV is of course a chill-factor
wait so... you can only play terran during campaign mode? kinda reminded me that i cant play other races -_-
As far as I remember there will be at least a small part as Protoss (with Zeratuls escape i guess...). Correct me if I'm wrong
i love kerrigan. even when she was ghost form.
HAHA. That's a true Zergs calling! Everybody else would say:" I love kerrigan, even when she was in "infested/assimilated" form. But I agree completely! Diggin' redheads
Ok, that was pretty nicely done! Hydralisks are always epic.
Do you guys think they made the Kerrigan-in-ghost-form cinematic just for this commercial? Or can we expect some sort of flash-back cinematic? Because that would be awesome, small recap in HD cinematics.
Now just waiting for the next commercial: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Thor Pilot
With the little cut-scene of Kerrigan as she was when she was human, I hope we will get some insight on what happened on Tarsonis right after Kerrigan was captured. Unless I have to play the SC campaign some more because they already answered that.
No. She had red hair. They've talked about this cinematic and had behind the scenes work shown at last blizzcon. Its a cinematic revolving around when Mengsk leaves her to get owned by zerg....its like her last stand as human.

The majority of people watching basketball are going to play sports games, or be so into the sport that they Just ignore the commercials... While I understand the need for advertising I think their Money would be better spent fixing some very known issues with their core audience.
This IS elitist and ignorant. Not everyone fits into your mold. I enjoy E-Sports, I also enjoy Basketball and Football since there are many parallels that can be drawn between the two worlds. I also enjoy playing Stratego, Go (baduk), and reading books on evolutionary biology and watching documentaries about nature. Should they rule me out just cuz I watch basketball?
^^ do note that I said "The majority"
As a side note, you are obviously on these forums, thus you don't need to see a commercial during a basketball game. My problem isn't even with the fact that there is a commercial. I just think Blizz should be using their money wisely(not that they don't have plenty of it XP). Then again, I'm a mere retail employee, not some marketing expert.

While this definitely fits the video - it's most likely Kerrigan and the terrain looks like the space platform tileset, there also were a lot of muta/ling in that mission - how does it fit with the storyline? Is the commercial telling the whole story from SC1 over BW and including parts of SC2? Is Kerrigan remembering her past? Is it just a random mix of scenes?
afaik Blizzard has a fairly large dedicated Cinematics department, I have always wondered why they never made more story-length cinematics like the Starcraft: Ghost 6 minute one.
I loved this ad but I'm sad we see so little of the Protoss.
Correct me if I'm wrong but
From the Terran side we see: Mengsk, a female ghost (likely a Kerrigan flashback), marines, a banshee, Raynor.
From the Zerg side we see: Infested Kerrigan, Hydras, Zerglings, Mutas.
From the Protoss side we see: Zeratul? That's it? I think they could have shown a few frames of a Colossus or Immortal in action or something awesome like that.

If I'm not mistaken, those are just the cinemas for the game. Kerrigan shows up as sort of the tortured past of Raynor. Zeratul shows up to speak to Jim Raynor on his battlecruiser and tell him about some such nonsense. I don't think any of it was gameplay footage. Just cinemas from the Human campaign.

why the **** would they put a cameo character in a cinematic/trailer? you guys seriously mystify me. she's getting swarmed by zerg, it's obviously the flashback to her infestation.

why the *** would they make a comic book series about nova if they weren't going to AT THE VERY LEAST make a cameo appearance of her in SC2? you guys seriously mystify me, EVERY PLANET in the galaxy is being swarmed by zerg.. its obviously the backdrop to the entire story...
Blizzard said yoinks ago at BlizzCon that there would be a cutscene flash back to Mengsk betraying Kerrigan so, yeah, seems pretty obvious to me that that was what was being shown.
