I like what you did, if the healthbars for buildings were to scale in length, it would look pretty sweet imo

It seems that clarity of units and the whole game is increased greatly when the health bars are on the bottom.

I prefer them on top as they are now, but i wouldnt mind them being a bit smaller - and perhaps linear without those squares dividing the health bar.

i think top is better because if you have for example colossi and zealots in a ball, the colossi health bars will be higher up than the zealot health bars. then you can easily micro your colossi. if they were all on the bottom, it would be hard to tell your collosi health bars from zealot health bars. in other words, because units are different sizes, health bars on top make it easier to pick out bigger units, which are also usually more important.
then again, i dont see it as that big of a differences so obviously the option to put health bars on the bottom would be at least a somewhat good idea. also having not played sc2 with health bars on bottom i cannot honestly say how big of a difference it would make, only speculate.

I would like to see options to customize it. Top, bottom, opacity, none at all, whatever have you.
|
Customize would be best. I like bottom personally. The sc1 bars just seemed very well made so that they were kind of part of the unit.
|
I like them on top, but they need to be smaller. It really clutters the screen.

|
They've addressed that before actually. They prefer the dividers as an art-style thing.

Why would top or bottom help you find units better in a fight?
UAC BJF LQP
Lets say each letter is a unit, with health bars on top, they obscure UACBJF with healthbars below they obscure BJFLQP.
Unless i'm not understanding what you mean by having health bars below

I think a majority of people really just want to see smaller health bars. They are currently far too big right now.
|
I'm not exactly sure what is best, but I definitely feel that there should be a number of options for you to customise them. I don't think that would be difficult to put in, and I think it's pretty important.
Opacity, top/bottom, size etc.

i played broodwar way more than sc2.
and health bars above is way better.

in large mass of units in a large scale battle, having the health bar on the bottom doesn't change the fact that there are still a large number of health bars being shown and cluttered about.
Though it's better for small scale battles.

In any case, I don't particularly like the way Health Bars are working right now. They obscure entirely too much of a large battle if you have them on, and it's more difficult to micro with them off. Since Day[9]'s daily on it, I expect to see Mass Queen played a bit more in ZvZ, and it is absolutely essential to be able to see both your units, and their health bars at the same time.
Ideally, what I'd like to see is the Health Bars having an enormous amount of customization. Width, Length, Color, Border, Texture, Opacity, Angle (I wouldn't mind trying out Vertical bars once or twice), Position, Always on, Always off, Alt Hold, Alt Toggle, Smooth, Segmented, etc.
When I was playing WoW, I had an add-on called IceHud that gave me all of these options and more. It was fantastic.

I think having highly customizable healthbars or any other UI element is going to be a "balance" issue. WoW is an extreme case of this because people with a smart set of add-ons are playing an entirely different game - they can do very difficult tasks with extreme ease. I'd also absolutely despise it if I had to update my health bar add-ons dependent upon race and map (since different maps have different light levels etc.) to be competitive.
I think the best thing to do is to just make their footprint smaller. That would satisfy (almost) everyone. I can't imagine anyone wanting bigger, more visible healthbars. If they make them just very slightly thinner (vertically) and give them just even 10-15% transparency (a very small amount), they would look 100x better.
Their color is fine because it contrasts heavily with literally every other color in the game. They have a very nice border and look good apart from just having too big a visual impact. If they were just the tiniest bit more subtle, that would remove 95% of problems with them. The other problems, I'm not sure of a smart solution.

I think a useful option would be to have health bars for your own / allied units only OR for enemy units only.
Personally I prefer the health bars on the top.

Are you a top or a bottom?

Single box at the head of the unit that uses the same gradual system of green to red for % of health. Would greatly improve visibility and allow for low health micro.
I can dream :3

Alt toggle seems to make the most sense to me. Holding it down restricts so much movement for the other things I gotta do...day9 can do it...but I can't.
