It's not counter-intuitive. They've been running their TCP-based networking code for years, and over that time they have worked out the bugs in their TCP networking layer. Granted, the real problem is that some idiot networking programmer over at Blizzard made the decision to use TCP in the first place. This is brain-dead simple stuff that I would expect any networking programmer who could get hired at a game developer to know, and this guy blew it. It's an RTS game FFS; you're passing controller data which might get up to 20 bytes per frame. You can send 30 frames worth of data across and still not blow the packet size. Ensuring the data gets there (which is what TCP is for) isn't your problem; you can resend it with the next frames' of data. Latency is your enemy. Because of this nonsensical screwup, in the middle of Beta, mere months from release, when this stuff should be settled and Blizzard shouldn't be rewriting major low-level systems, Blizzard has to swap networking protocols in order to get better latency. It's the right thing to do, but only because the wrong thing was done a long time ago. I hope that Blizzard fired that networking guy, though. The one who analyzed the networking structure of an RTS game and felt that TCP was the best way to go. It's like looking at going to the moon and thinking, "If I could just build a really big gun, with a lot of gunpowder, I'd make it!" | ||

Edit: Also there has already been confirmed that in for example Russia you will have the option to buy a dirt cheap version of the game with a small monthly fee instead of buying a permanent copy like you do in the US or in Europe. 3 times in a row have I been getting dropped and I really thought it was my internet messing with me LOL. Does it make sense to continue playing now ? im now 1-3 due to 3 drops (was promoted to gold pre-patch 13) so I guess I'll have to start from bronze or something >< | ||
