While I don't intend to tell my life story here, I do want to include a little background about my podcasting history. I've run a WoW PvP podcast (oh no, my secrets out!) for two years coming up this June. ArenaCast did quite well for itself, building a community and peaking at around 12,000 weekly downloads on shows. As of late, my interest in the game has slowed down, and I've stopped doing it as my co-hosts bowed out one-by-one.
Podcast Info I've decided to go ahead and do a podcast -- maybe weekly, maybe bi-weekly, or this may be the first and last episode -- for SC2. Right now its a developing project, so I'm just winging it and naming it State of the Game SC2 Beta Podcast. Keep in mind that I'm still working on molding the show. I'm more of a dive-right-in, fix-it-later type guy so that's what I plan on doing!

Would be interesting to hear a detailed discussion about how starcraft1 skills translates over to starcraft 2. Are there notable differences in how the wc3 players and the sc players approach the game?
What makes the game fun to play? Are these factors probable to remain over time? The game is in it's beta stage but for how long do you think it can/will live as a game and as a e-sport?
Hope u'll find anything of this interesting enough for discussion.
I've gotta say that you've approached the elitist sc, particularly TL, community in a respectful and correct fashion. I see a future in these podcasts if the topics and guests remain as appealing as these sure are.

Seconded. I'm dying to see something like this happen. Seeing TLO's T match vs Nazgul on metalopolis was the closest ive yet to seeing this and it made me so happy haha
@Question Do you think the Marauder makes the terran matchups a lot less interesting due to how powerful it is in every matchup? What needs to be done(if anything) to fix this problem?

I missed this meme -- please explain!
In the first round of the Team Triple Strike Tournament earlier this week, LzGamer was playing against some Protoss guy named BoxerFan or something on scrap station. When the game (quickly) turned in Lz's favor, the other guy built a nexus at the top of his base. When it was done building he quickly exclaimed in chat "wtf nexus can't liftoff?" and started saying that you should be able to lift off your nexus since protoss is the more advanced race. Then Lz rolled him. Or something like that.

Sounds like something I need to adopt in my casts to continue being known as "Noob Observer"
@Question Would it benefit SC2 game play and SC2 as a spectator e-sport to zoom out by 10-15% allowing the player and fans to see more on the screen at once?
On March 31 2010 12:42 Kouda wrote: Will this be replacing the SC2 Beta Podcast with Mantra/Day9?
Nope! Thats TL.net official cast. This is just something for me to spew out the garbage that is my stream of consciousness about SC2 and have the people who know what they're talking about there to make me sound good.
@Question: Many Protoss players say PvZ is heavily biased in Zerg's favor. Some Zerg players, however, contend that the matchup is imbalanced in favor of Protoss. Who is right, especially in terms of high level play?

As a kind favor to me, please don't make it so people can only ask questions from Twitter, as I absolutely refuse to get a Twitter account (for various reasons). It's not a big deal, though.
The podcast itself seems like it's gonna be pretty awesome. Thanks a lot for putting it together.
@Do you think that MULEs being so strong in late low-econ style games is a problem? It does seems to remove a lot of options from their opponents. (exemple, LittleOne vs Nazgul game on Metalopolis) If yes, do you have any idea how this could be improved/fixed?
The distinct mechanics of each SC1 race were the cornerstone which inspired lasting racial identities that went beyond simple competitive analysis. Like mythical gods they inspired allegiance, personified ideals, and even transcended the players by shaping how fans perceived progamers' personalities. Not only are diverse races good for the depth or complexity of a strategy game, but the strong racial identities inherently develop spectator attachment to one player over another in any game they see, building investment in the outcome of a game which otherwise may not have been significant to the viewer. It is this investment, built on by developing favorite players and increased exposure to the community, which fuels e-sports; it is the reason we care. @Question Given the evolution of Beta metagame thus far, as well as the trend in balance patches thus far, do you think the racial identities are more or less distinct than in SC:BW? Have they reasonably maintained the old identities? And if you consider Beta from a less technical newcomer spectator perspective, do you believe SC2 will have the distinct polarizing effect of its predecessor?

Why do they have to both apply? Someone's already come out with a tool that eliminates the zoom limit, there's no reason why spectators couldn't have this functionality in-game, while players were restricted to the usual, limited FoV.
Questions: - Do you think Blizzard should implement Highround-advantages like in SC1? - What do you think about the hard-counter-System with huge DMG-Boni against certain Armor-types as it is currently used in SC2?
@Question: It has been said that the ZvZ-mu is a race for roaches/hydras and that number of drones mining isnt as critical as in SC1. Does this mean that early drone scouting could start happening in ZvZ and the matchup become more like the other mirror match-ups? Since the economy isn't such a crucial factor as it was in SC1 ZvZ.
@Question: How do you predict the trilogy aspect of StarCraft II will affect the lifespan, progaming potential, and popularity of the game in the future? Will Blizzard use this as an opportunity to truly "perfect" the game by time all of the expansions are released, and how do you think this will compare to the way BroodWar changed StarCraft 1?

Only one really missing is Incontrol.. but that might be a future show member.

@Question How badly is Zerg suffering from lack of strong AoE abilities (eg swarm and lurker) both from a balance and availability of strategic options perspective.

I don't know whether I can comment here, if not I'm sry, but I don't think Zerg lacks of AoE with banelings, Infestor and Ultralisk. T for example has much less AoE with Tanks haven't been used that often and Raven with HSM getting out very late in the game.
The show will be posted in this thread late Thursday night (maybe around 12 a.m. or 1 a.m. depending on how long we go). I will try to submit it to iTunes that night but usually that process takes awhile. I'll post a download link though so that should suffice.
It's not going to be live -- although technically I could do this on a Ustream.tv account, are people interested in this?

As long as its viewable for a european audience.. IE in the afternoon / early evening US time at most.
What kind of opening song are you looking for? If its just a little short ditty I could whip something up tonight and see what you think. Any description you can give me will help, too, anything about length, instruments, feel, etc.

Techno, maybe throw in some signature Starcraft sounds, not really looking anything expansive but something professional (or as professional as possible). If you want go download a podcast from Arenacast.net and listen to the intro there for some inspiration. Going lofi for the rest of the day. Be back on a PC around 4:30 CST.

Ultralisks are pretty much moot point as of right now. T3 right now is a joke outside of Broodlords, and it's much more cost effective than the ultralisk right now. So you're really talking about banelings and infestor.
Terran has more than just Tanks and HSM in terms of AoE. Hellions, Ghost nuke and EMP, and Thor AA (if we're counting splash as "AoE"). I really wish Zerg had an AoE unit that wasn't a caster and didn't suicide like the Lurker.

Sorry, download is kinda slow. Sorry, not all topics were covered. Sorry, Nony's computer died right before the cast or something. Hope he's not dead. PLEASE comment and tell me what everyone thinks!
Just finished listening. I really enjoyed this, it was both informative and entertaining. The interplay between the various guests was fun. I'm really looking forward to more stuff like this.
It sucks that Nony didn't end up in it but at the same time I think 3 guests is a good number to have.. I feel like four would have been a bit too much and there would have been too much (unintentional but unavoidable) interruption going on.
I really enjoyed the various humor throughout the podcast, and it was really interesting as well. I was especially happy to hear their opinions on the future of starcraft 2 esports. Hopefully our community will be able to grow a lot when sc2 ships, and retain its uniqueness amongst gaming communities. (Which they talked about if I remember.) Because if it does grow a lot then it will almost surely lend help to putting up successful tourneys, and getting sponsors, which would hopefully lead to sponsored foreign teams.
Because without a growth within the community after the game ships I can’t see foreign esports for sc2 doing well, outside of Korea all of the people are just a little widespread, and though there are many of us, it’s not enough to currently make a super huge profit off of, without growth.
Luckily I’m confidant that sc2 will be a huge success both amongst the esports aspect and among people who’ve yet to be drawn into its awesomeness. The only question will be . . . how will the cookie crumble?
Anyway, sorry if that was a bit of a long post, hopefully not to offtopic.
Thanks again for the podcast. Oh, and I suggest sticking to three guests, it seemed like a really good number, I feel like four would just be all over the place. We saw a fair amount of interruptions with just three guests, so four might be a tad overboard. But at the same time, three created enough conflicting opinions and separate personalities to warrant any interruptions. (Plus they were humorous.)
P.S. Feel free of course to try out four people and see how it works out. Just to see how it goes.
Awesome awesome cast. Really cool to hear artosis day9 louder and JP in a cast together.
Anyone else notice how sexy louders voice is? like wow.
It was good that the cast had good direction and jp kept it moving through topics, really covered alot of stuff which was great. Also good to hear that some of the people had differing opinions on things. it was just cool
Haha i forgot to mention. The hands-down funniest part of the cast (in my opinion) was louder saying to day9 "just yell 'bear semen' so we can move on" or something like that. that was great.
@Question for Louder: During one of your streams you yelled at your daughter to shut up because she was trying to talk to you while you were playing Starcraft 2, saying "Daddy, Daddy,...". What have you done to mend your broken family's relationship since this beta came out?

When you posted this would be happening, I saw the guest list and I was like "this is going to be absolutely amazing". So then I downloaded the cast and listened and I'm like "this is absolutely amazing". SO GOOD
I really hope you can continue this, it was a really good
So hilariously entertaining, with some good high-end critical analysis of the game. Loved the cast, can't wait for future ones! Best SC podcast i've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
Great work on this.... is there any way I can subscribe to this podcast on iTunes? I didn't see it listed on the iTunes store.
BTW 77mb is very large for a 1.25 hour file. If you wanted to save bandwitdth you can probably afford to bring your bitrate down to 64kbps and sample rate down to about 32kHz without a huge drop in quality (since you're not broadcasting music), this will more than halve the file size.
Great cast! I definitely think you should vary the guests week to week in order to get a diverse set of opinions. Of course you lose the ability to compare players thoughts about the patches and state of the beta over time by doing that, but I think it would be worth it.

still good stuff
It wasnt even really a question, more a statement/rhetoric.
I really want to see a return of the louder vs artosis dynamics they had going there, oh god the tension was great.

Yeah....but Artosis then said something like "Nanyuken the Spinecrawler"....or so. I didn't get it acoustically even though i rewinded the podcast >.<
One comment: Nony was scheduled to be on, but I think 3 people made for a great conversation. Seems 4 could be too cluttered, or somenoe would just not contribute much.

I think he said something like "Now you're looking at the Spinecrawler" as a reference to spinecrawlers looking like giraffes in a zoo.

I dont know if he was 'whining' per-say. I think everyone handled themself very well, despite the slight banter and arguing!
The only suggestion I'd make is to possibly drop one guy from the head-count...Just cause at times it was difficult to hear from everyone. I often found myself "What does Louder think about this? Or how come Sean didn't chime in here?"
Kinda sudden and last minute but if you have any questions for LzGaMeR, myself, Day9 or Louder reply to this with @QUESTION and I'll get it on the show. Recording in about 90 minutes.
Hey JP loved the first cast, since I'm guessing you are going to be discussing the most recent patch and the changes it has done to specifically Zerg I have a basic question that I think a lot of people have been asking.
@Most of the community seems to think Zerg is lacking in diversity, partly because of the # of units they have compared to the other two races. Do you guys think Zerg is in need of another unit, and if so what niche should it fill?
Thanks to all of you guys taking your time to do this cast, can't wait to listen to it!
@Do you think the marauder needs any further changes? I know LzGamer likes using them vs Zerg and with medivac support they seem nigh unbeatable for any zerg ground army.
I'm depressed with the current situation in ZvT. Artosis also said he skips Mutas in this Matchup or that he won't get them in greater masses.
@Do you think ZvT changed a lot when compared to Broodwar and what do you think about the Ultralisk (quote on quote: "just a bad Broodlord!") in this Matchup?
@JP what's MLG's next step with starcraft 2 beyond the outpost you set up at teamliquid--is there anything in the works as far as more broadcasting or possibly even a circuit event?
If you want to get into specific match-ups, I have a feeling you'll have to devote entire casts or multiple casts for one match up. It may be a good idea to only invite 2 guests, one for each race.
*shrug* Day9 just thinks that spine crawlers look like giraffe necks. When spine crawlers attack he always says something about it looking like a giraffe poking something.

Artosis is referring to Nyoken, a terran player on team EG.
but seriously, I think in the future you should try for more racial diversity, this brings for discussion from several different directions.(instead of louder stating a point and lz saying I agree and day9 also saying I agree) we need more debates and serious strategy discussion bouncing off of each other from every side of the matchup on a podcast like this. Im not saying the players are biased, or the cast was bad by any means but, the more diversity the better.

I agree. Lz was kind of a last minute thing. As I do more MLG Showmatches and get more peoples contact's then I will be able to diversify the cast accordingly.
I think a big issue for new players, for the beta at least, is the lack of chat channels.
I haven't played BW remotely competitively since like 2004ish and because of that I don't know anyone and it makes it really hard to get motivated to play.
oh just to simultaneously backup JP and make fun of Louder: immortals kill roaches now in 3 shots rather than in 4, so he's wrong. (they used to leave the roach with 1 hp). also pretty much every unit does kill roach in 1 less hit or more less hits. except thors/siege mode tanks. but marauders take 1 less shot to kill, marines in 7 less hits, stalkers in 1 less hit, zealots take 4 less hits to kill, etc

@QUESTION it seems like everyone, even at high levels, is totally falling prey to the one-hotkey-syndrome and micro is just horrible so far in SC2B because everyone is just moving their unit blobs around totally sub optimally. Do you guys think there's going to be someone who puts the work into figuring how to hotkey armies more effectively allowing for better micro and concaves allowing them to jump way ahead of everyone else who is going for styles that are much more macro oriented? Or would that simply take too much APM?
