Like many people, I have been concerned about the lack of chat on bnet. Many have commented on this, but I haven't seen a thread devoted to it yet (On TL).

I have always had faith in Blizzard to do things better (than any other games developer) and so i try to look at this issue with an open mind rather than skepticism.

I played Dawn of War 2 for short while when it first came out. I remember ranting to my friends about how useless developers are creating an online interface (windows live) so rubbish that it is not even as good as battle.net (which is 12 ancient technology by now) And today much to my disappointment, the first thing which went through my head when i saw bnet 2.0 was "windows live with a new skin".

Something the original battle.net had, which no other game I have played has been able to replicate, is the sense of community and scale. I think this is largely due to the simple, functional chat system. This worked so well that people would camp out chat channels even when they were not playing. There was a reason to be connected even if you were not going to have a game.

When i first started to play on live, it felt much more empty and less fun. I assumed the lack of chat was due to the fact that live caters for console gamers which obviously don't chat as efficiently as a PC user would. I never thought this concept would have carried on to one of blizzards creations. However, considering this is the case, i have to accept that maybe there are good reasons why.

Obvious disadvantages of chat would be:
-Spam
-Proliferation of dubious advertisement
-Obscenities
-Teenagers with verbal diarrhea
-Consumers experience being ruined by rubbish in chat (lets admit, back in the day bnet chat was exploding with crap no matter which channel you were in. There were times i felt like i was getting dumber by the second just from being exposed to it)

Obvious advantages would be:
-More potential for creating online friendships
-Greater sense of community
-General ease and convenience and communicating, especially with multiple people at once.
-Satisfying my nostalgia for bnet

I'm confident that Bnet 2.0 will be WAY cooler than windows live, considering all the league stuff i have noticed which impresses me greatly (as someone who likes to play competitively). But how will the current lack of chat effect out experience? I would like to get some more opinions from people in the TL community and maybe some more insight as to why this has evolved and how it will work.

other things to consider:
public channels, private channels, or both?

are online communities strong enough to support the everyday player without the need for in game large scale public chat, and how will the new players discover these communities?

Is the presence of channels full of e-raging pre pubecent teenagers enough to drive new or sensitive players away from the game?

I know from experience, one thing which made WoW more accessible to a wide audience (besides it being easier than using Velcro straps to do up your shoes) is that people seemed to be more mature, well mannered and helpful when compared to starcraft/ warcraft. (At the other end of the spectrum you have counter strike chat which is a cess pool of blasphemous vulgarities). Could this be a reason for lack of chat?

Agreed chat rooms definitely needs to be added.

From the live streams, battle.net looks so empty with no sense of community. Hopefully Blizzard will add it in time for release.

Chat rooms need to be added 100%.

The Battle.net chatrooms are one of the reasons the SC community is as tightly nit as it is now, imo.

I wholeheartedly agree. I miss the days of talking strategy post-game and then having the conversation end up somewhere completely different. It created more of a sense of camaraderie than the perfunctory "glhf" "gg" I see in most games.

what's gonna happen anyways, is people are gonna just make custom games like "CHAT HERE" "ZERG STRATEGY" etc. Or they will be forced to use other means of chat rooms like AIM, IRC, etc. It's pretty retarded if you ask me, every game since the internet has had chat rooms. doesn't make sense to take them out.

It'd be like throwing out the trade channel in WoW or something.

Didn't Blizzard say that there would be a post-game chat opportunity? Did that ever get implemented?

On the topic of this, how are we supposed to add people when we can usually only see the first part of their name? I wanted to add someone after a game but the only thing is left is the main part of his name and I can't find the second part anywhere...
So say we all.

I thought i heard that something may be implemented later, but it wont be exactly like the original bnet chat.

I just hope the reason it isn't an integral part of bnet is not because of spammers/ hackers/ botters. Removing channels because of that would be like not letting people swim at the beach because some kids will pee in the water.

One thing which bothered me about the live system where you 'send messages' to friends, is that its too formal. When i want to send someone a message i feel like i would at home when i want to call a friend on the phone after hours as if i could potentially be interrupting something.

And on the other hand, i don't want intrusive ambiguous notifications that someone has messaged me while i'm playing. Especially when it's someone saying 'sup dawg' and you could a just read it on the fly with the old whisper command.

What if my friend comes online and asks if he has time to have a game before my current game finishes so we can 2v2? If that message doesn't pop right up for me to read mid game, then there's no point even sending it. Simple things like this can't happen.

Chat channels are casual and informal, and it's as if the people there obviously expect conversation.

Haven't seen any post-game chat. It's not too hard to look up your opponents profile and send him a pm or something though.

But yeah, no chat rooms really confused me. The new friendslist/party system is nice but it's definitely not a replacement for actual chat.

seriously you think its more discouraging to see people chat about the game/other subjects than to see an empty screen and a few buttons here and there and not knowing what the hell am i supposed to do, if he had the chat he could ask his questions directly there.

for players with no friends that play sc2 its going to be a fucking grueling experience to try and get freinds, you cant just say in the middle of a game if the person wants to be your friend ffs.

Blizzard did say they were going to implement public chat rooms but they wouldn't be ready at initial release. Disappointing but they are being implemented. This petition really isn't necessary.

Pretty much every blizzard game has had chat rooms up to sc2, really don't know what they were thinking on this one.

Another reason to add chat:

Yeah, so far I'm liking Starcraft 2 the GAME. Not so hot on Battle.net 2.0.

Yeah, this as well. I played with some TL:er and only by dumb luck was I able to add him after the game... because his identifier was teamliquid xD
