From most interface screens you can right-click someone's name and add him to friends. It works on the victory screen and the ladder pages.

Bnet2 definitely needs private chatrooms though.

For some reason I remember reading that blizzard's whole goal with bnet 2 is to get the level of cross game chat functionality that bnet1 had by letting you chat even with wow players or some such.

There's no way they'd let b.net2 be such a downgrade, perhaps the chat functionality was something holding back the beta so they moved on without it to keep the game development rolling?

Can't possibly see the game launching without channels

Yeah I don't get why beta took so long to come out if it was for "refining bnet2" when we get maybe 1/5th of what "bnet2" actually is.
Sometimes I'll be talking to someone while in a game or replay with /r, and /r will just stop working, and it'll say "To []" instead of to my friend, it's really annoying.

To f add someone, right after a game right click their id in the scoreboard and hit friend add. You can look at the scoreboard for a game in your recent game list (like 5 games I think) under your own profile if you decide to add someone after closing the initial scoreboard.

Bnet2.0 is a big let down. I was hoping for a new and improved Bnet with all the features SC and WC3 had but more -- not missing half the features and others just modified/re-skinned.

Because I doubt they give you 100% Bnet 2.0 functionality just for the sake of beta. It will most definitely have more features and functions than what is present right now.
Everyone should just calm down and stop expecting every single thing given to them on a silver platter from the very start and have some patience.

Personally, I never used the General chat room to socialize. They are too large and always end up in cesspool. I mostly met people in the game lobby before a game starts, especially in custom games and Use map setting.

I hope these will make a re-appearance.

My complaint isn't necessarily in what we don't have accessible in bnet2, but in how long it took to give us such an incomplete interface. When I heard beta was being delayed because of work needed to be done on bnet2 I was anticipating a more complete and less buggy interface. Having the chat channel is crucial to keeping a successful team imo. Every team has a meeting place, and have friends and followers who like to hang out there too. It's easy to set up games, and great for talking to your friends which just strengthens our community even more.

I'm going to be ridiculously upset if there isn't a way for us to do this, and i know iwont be the only one..

The point of a beta is not to be quiet and assume things will change. Whether or not refinements to Bnet2.0 are in the works (and they likely are) the more people talk about something (i.e. complain) the more likely it is to receive some attention.

Not sure if anyone has forgotten or not, but Battle.net 2.0 is in BETA as well, and not all of the features are implimpented.

Also, if you look there is a whole "Social" button on the top left that is grayed out. Be patient, we'll get chat.

Chat Rooms are definitely a thing that is on top of my most wanted list.

There were times when I just didn't feel like playing a game of SC and just chat with my friends on Bnet. Once you're in game, you'll rather concentrate on your game. Oh sure there's the usual chit-chat, but when half your attention is in the game, the conversations usually become dull, or the game quality is less than perfect.
