I think it's even harder for Day9 since he is forcing himself to speak while playing.

Idn exactly how qualified I am to say this, I do a lot of psychological research at university (given its mostly in comparative cognition) , but I've been watching those VODs for the sole purpose of watching sean's reactions (amnesia really is the best 'scary' game especially for observing how people handle a scary situation (2nd would prob be silent hill 2 but its outdated and not on PC) and they seem completely legit to me. His constant battling on whether or not to continue to the next room, his constant fiddling with objects to relieve tension, his involuntary outbursts to startling stimuli ( a scream or loss of sanity, seeing a monster, etc) all point to him actually being terrified. I believe at one point he said something to the effect of "I am a 25 year old man and I am terrified" while asking the audience for advice on which room to go to (think it was during the water monster fight) You really can't fake these behaviors. If Sean was most concerned with providing entertainment like you say, he would not be picking up EVERY chest and rock and box and twirling it around, and he would not be struggling so much with advancing the plot (going into the next room). Those behaviors clearly show he is scared of continuing. I understand that for someone who has never played Amnesia (which you really should its amazing) it seems strange that a game can scare a grown gamer as badly as it is. But the game really has every characteristic of a well made scary movie : Realistic, isolated, tense music, uncertainty of the rules of the universe. Those are clearly the qualities the development team aimed to maximize and they did a fucking great job. (furthermore the way they script their events is nothing short of perfect) So yea, Amnesia is just that scary, Sean would have to 1. be fully aware of what involuntary behaviors one is likely to exhibit in a scary situation, and 2. be a good enough actor to fool 15k people, and 3. actually not be getting scared while playing amnesia (highly unlikely lol)

It aims to terrorize you through what you don't see, as opposed to what you do see. As such, even if it is just a water puddle, you're in this uncomfortable 1st person perspective, you have no weapon, it's dark (both in game and out of game) and the control is probably (intentionally) a little bit awkward. That's what creates this panic-y mood that you can feel at those points in the story. You know the feeling in a horror movie when you know there's going to be some jump scare any moment, the music is creepy, the lights are low. Yeah, the whole game is like that. And when it actually happens you freak the fuck out.

Watching it is hilarious, but playing it throws you in the character's nightmare. I had to keep asking myself if it was me or my character that was breathing heavily.

Yep, the game is actually that well made. Lights off, headphones on, shit gets scary. if anything the audience and chat screen is making it LESS scary for Sean than it would be if he was actually completely alone. On a side note, as anyone played pneubra? the studios first game? If so, is it anywhere as good as amnesia?

About the fake talk, ofc at some points ("dull" moments) he tries to build up tension, but you can clearly point out when this is the case. In other moments (when the monster dude appeared and the cam moved to the chair and he freaked out) I felt almost as panicy as Sean, I could totally feel it. Really awesome game, glad I dont have to play it myself.. ![]()

@stokes17, I never played Penumbra but Zero Punctuation mentioned it in his review of Amnesia. Apparently the only difference is that you could fight back in that game, but awkwardly.

Getting through the Prison Block was one of the most stressful experiences I've had, and then the Morgue... I finished the game after a week, and when I learned there were multiple endings I uninstalled it and went back to playing Minecraft. There is no way I will subject myself to that mental torture again, even if I know where all of the scary stuff is. @stokes17, I never played Penumbra but Zero Punctuation mentioned it in his review of Amnesia. I think I might have played that one, yea combat was really awkward

Especially when he ran out of oil at key moments. I just rewatched some of them after already having seen it streamed live, and I still cannot stop laughing. "cannot stop laughing"?!?!? I was shaking and unable to move, overcome with TERROR Great show Sean, cant wait til next time!
