Used marines+diamondbacks to get the few trains down while I kept making tanks and a bit of mnm.
Make enough tanks to defend 2 spots and you'll win with mnm support. Tanks should be able to hit 2 rails and also have a few where enemies will most likely come from.
Also take the top left expo, I found it worth it. Don't forget to get all the diamondbacks and zerg bones.

MM/Diamondback, use the bio to engage the guards while the Diamondbacks chase down the train.
You don't need to expand, just make Diamondbacks from 1 fac while 2 reactor-raxes pump MM (more if you can support them, add in merc bio if you wish).
Clear the kill teams in between trains so you have more space to work with.

The Tank/Goliath escort will destroy your diamondback fleet if they aren't fully upgraded by this point. Even then, you can expect to lose one or two depending on how lucky you get with the track and positioning. You can easily afford to bring some SCV's along at this point since your minerals will be close to tapped, and the following trains only have light guards, so it's not a game breaker if those SCV's take a tank blast for the team.
|
Marine/Medic (out of 1 rax, you do have all the marine/medic upgrades, right?) + diamondbacks (out of 2 fac) + mercs handled it fine for me. Just run your starter units all over the map before the first train to get like 4 diamondbacks + hidden minerals/gas to give yourself an early boost.
Position your marine/medic army at a bend in the train track. It will maximize their firing time without the need to move. You will probably only need 2 stims per train. It's just like tower defense
After that just maintain your production out of those buildings while your army crushes everything on the map.

Mass Diamondbacks with a couple of SCVs to follow/repair. And they're mobile enough to avoid the killteams
They do so much damage to armored units that if you can come from BEHIND the train and pick off the escort one by one you'll be fine.
Also coming from behind there's a good chance the raven won't engage at all

I just did reactored marine/medics off of 2 barracks with constant diamondback production off of a single factory. I think I made 2 tanks + 1 bunker as well just to protect at home.
I never took the expansion and avoided the kill teams like the plague.
It's important to have lots of diamondbacks in order to take down the 2 speedy trains... Trains 8 & 9 I think?

definately just go mass diamondback with lots of saves, youll smoke it.

This is the first mission, that I actually had some trouble with on my run for the brutal achievement. I won't repeat six pages of hints, but I'll tell you this: Theres already a ton of walkthroughs for every mission and achievement in the game on youtube. Just do a proper search. Or go to liqipedia/single player. they have all of the missions vids. (I think).

2 3 bunkers marine in base and 2 factory mass diamondbacks u can even kill the elite marauders.
|
mass reapers is the way to go. Once you get to 60 or 70 of them you can just stutterstep all over anything, the only thing you have to watch for is banshees and ravens.
|
I went for a small force of MMM and a couple of tanks, to go with a swarm of diamondbacks. The other forces will kill the escorts and the kill teams, while the diamondbacks pursue the train. It was hard, but i did it.
|
I found the mission to be quite easy, 2 Factory Diamondbacks, and slowly add marines to the mix once you can afford, keep producing SCV's ofc, once a raven is there, micro the hunted unit, usually a Diamondback, away from your army group, and you should be fine, don't forget to target fire air units with the Marines.
|
I just got Diamondbacks whenever gas permitted and spent the rest of my resources on MMM. Worked perfectly; I just A-moved around the map and followed the train with the Diamondbacks while the rest of my army engaged the escort.
EDIT:// I never expanded; might be easier if you do that but I don't know if the enemy will target your expo or not.
|
I did the whole thing again today with a mostly diamondback force and some MM to support against train armies... I completely avoided the patrolling marauders and took the expo pretty early.
|
If you have tanks, I think that's the easiest way. A decent tank ball with the mercs and some missile turrets near the tracks will wipe out almost all of their army and severely damage the train to the point that a couple diamndbacks can just focus fire it down.

This mission is pretty trivial with bunkers/tanks camping enemy choke... +diamondbacks to chase.
Use repair/heal alot (or fast expand to the top) to keep expenditure low since not much money

got through this yesterday on my brutal play through.
Honestly I just used the 3 initial d-backs plus tanks. I want to think maybe a handful of marines for air, (ravens and medivacs was the only enemy air), I got vehicle weapon upgrades but not sure they were necessary. The first two trains are your real challenge, as if you just stick to the 3 dbacks you'll be chasing the first train a bit, and the second will have an escort. Decent micro will save you though. The third and fourth train you'll probably still be using your dbacks to chase after it passes your tanks, slightly, if you've macro'd well enough. Maybe better than I fared. By the last train I think I had 15+ tanks, blasting the last couple to death as they got into radius and easily taken out all the bunkers around the middle of the map just with siege splash and the roaming marauder units went down as well, didn't even aim for them they just walked into the radius.
The enemy never attacked while a train was coming so as long as you move your tanks back to base after the train is down, use your dbacks to clean up the salvage, you'll have plenty of time to move your tanks and siege between the 3 tracks once they come out of the tunnel.
Some levels are just not designed at all vs certain units. train robbery is tanks, havens fall is ghosts w/nukes, engine of destruction is battlecruisers, supernova... well you can rape that pretty good with the banshees you're given on that one, but it's even easier (but longer) to abuse the fire, if that counts as a unit.. bleh. You get the point. Most levels have pretty good recipes for cheese, if you just want to get through it.
I mean really, it's too damn simple. Your base is in the middle of the map, right next to all the tracks. The only time you might be "rushed" is if you left your tanks sieged on the north most track when a speed train comes out of the south, but you'll still probably make it. With the tank damage upgrade from the armory, and if you bother with vehicle upgrades, it just becomes laughable.
.... Like most of the campaign on brutal. But then again, even a medic&marine army steamrolls about anything on brutal as well. Finding the unit weaknesses just makes it 2nd grade mode.
I'm just doing it like this though because my raid night achievement run comes after I finish this brutal run, and wanted to find the quick easy routes. Can't imagine how WtfBbqEasyStomp these strats are on normal

i just did mass diamondbacks. build marines with excess minerals. marines are used versus the banshees and only the banshees, since dbacks can't shoot up. they're a very good unit, the diamondbacks. they killed the marauder force for me without breaking a sweat. i mean sure, you'll lose a couple of them but in the long run it doesn't really matter. they just do too much damage.

.... Like most of the campaign on brutal. My thoughts exactly. I just went mass Diamondback with a few MM (probably like 2-3 medics and however many marines I could make with extra minerals) and Siege Breakers. Just siege up before the train/patrols came and sit there. No micro required, no macro required. :/

I just did MM ball + diamondbacks. If you want, grab the expo to the northwest. It is lightly defended and you can take it pretty easily/quickly.
Just spam diamondbacks (off two factories) and MM off of a few rax. Have the MM ball kill the infantry units guarding the trains and keep the diamondbacks chasing the trains. Also, have the diamondbacks pick off any firebats (they do annoying damage and tank for awhile against MM balls).
Should be pretty easy. Just make sure you clear up bunkers quickly.
And don't bother engaging the marauders. Not unless you have a force much bigger and know you can take it without sustaining heavy losses.
