I have spent a good two hours trying various strategies in order to complete "The best defense" achievement which involves killing three hatcheries within the mission. I have tried building bunkers outside the creep and rushing marines really early, etc. with minimal success. The problem I find is that these spine crawlers RAPE my marines so fast and they are positioned so well and the nydus worms allow the zerg to be constantly reinforcing.

Anyone completed this achievement and care to detail how they did it?

Get it later, once you beat the other missions, you'll have access to new units that can solve your problem.

a bit of marine micro (basicly just pull back the ones taking damage) and push out, make sure you spend all your money.

Also having a few scv's repairing the bunkers, and perhaps make an extra one at each choke can help a lot.

Actually one try later I figured it out.

The way I approached it:

1. salvaged my edge bunkers
2. turned in onto faster (for some reason the game had the mode set on fast which makes it seem so slow and throws all my macro off)
3. macro'd up to scv saturation and 120 food marine medic and then went to attack and it was pretty easy from there.

I have a hunch that it's possible to go back to the mission with upgraded units... If I remember correctly, you still don't have stim back there (actually, I don't have it now, I'm saving my money for other upgrades), and I guess that stim would make a world of difference

i did it with what i was given. it was really easy... you just play normal, macro up to about 10-12 minutes and move out. i went out the right bridge, rescued the two camps, and looped back down. there's a base with 3 hatcheries up a ramp. after u take that out, head north through a choke and take out the 4th hatch

I did it on brutal mode. Took a few tries but i found out the bottomleft hatcheries are one hundred times easier than the topright ones.

Unfortunately, upgrades are not retroactive. (Actually don't quote me on this, upgrades are not retro active if you are loading from a save, which makes sense really).

But yeah, like it has been said, macro up, 4 rax with 3 reactor and 1 techlab seems to do the trick. Wait till you get a critical mass of rines and then smash that bottom left 3x hatcheries. Then the middle 1 hatch is simple!
Eh?

tried it, upgrades are not retroactively given when repeating missions (ie: no stimpacks, no flamers) from the mission archive :S

i keep getting slaughtered when I get anywhere close to those bases

I would sent a replay if I could but I just ended up geting 5-6 rax pumping rines, kept a large ball in my base with a large ball moving around hatchs.. I think I ended up geting 6 -7 hatch with that strat. Got both upgrades as well.

I did it by just running out with my army composing of mostly marines + medics. I took out one base, and halfway took out the other base. I got the achievement and just reloaded before I attacked. You don't need to finish the mission, just killing them and failing works as well.

im really getting frustrated , im tryin to built as many marines as possible and a few medics,
when there r only 5 minutes left i try to go for the left hatcheries but they still get raped by these zergs.
so how many wbf`s do u have?, i have like 15 but i obviously cant build enough marines fast enough.
if i try to repair and build bunkers i lose even more resources and time.
I really dont see how i can get this archievment.
Maybe if you got some more infos or tips i would appreciate that.

so i finnaly made it
this time i immediately built a dozen wbf`s and a third building for the marines.
Then i pretty muched focused on constantly building marines and some medics.
It was pretty easy this time to destroy the hatches. I guess i have to get some more xp in sc2.
Thanks for your comments guys, it really helped me out.

i'm having trouble with the OTHER achievement on this mission, the one where you can't lose any buildings . . . I beat the whole mission without losing any buildings even on hard, but I didn't get the achievement . . do you need to protect the civilian buildings too?

no you only need to protect your own buildings, i did on normal which was very easy
remember not to sell a building or you wont get the achievment.

Yeah, that's how you won anything on SC:BW campaign too.

1) Turtle
2) Econ saturation
3) Huge army
4) 1a2a3a (with micro where actually required)
5) Profit.

Same thing happend to me while playing on Normal. I protected all the buildings and didn't lose any and just didn't get the achievement at all. Pretty lame, could be a bug.

Notice that you have to beat the mission without losing or salvaging any buildings.

Maybe you salvaged your inner-most bunkers? If so, then it doesn't count.

This might answer some of the issues:
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/cusgw/for_those_of_you_going_for_the_achievements_in/

In the mission "Zero Hour", there's an achievement (Hold the Line) where you have to survive without losing or salvaging any structures on Normal difficulty or higher.

Keep in mind that the end-mission cinematic has at least two nydus worms popping up inside your base. If you built somewhere where the nydus worms are supposed to pop up, the game destroys your buildings to make room for the nydus worm in the cinematic. Yes, that's right, you can still fail the achievement IN THE CINEMATIC after the mission's supposed to have ended. Don't put your buildings where the nydus worms are supposed to spawn.

Edit: This is mission 3 in the Mar Sara campaign. In fact, build as little as possible, just in case.

As several have said:

First:
You CANNOT just get tech upgrades. When you go back, you play it as if you were that particular tech level. IE, what you had the first time is what you have now.

Second:
This MUST be done on Hard difficulty to get the achievement. So, people saying "just play on casual"... no go.

Now, how did I do it?

I salvaged my front 2 bunkers, and put 4 guys in both of the bunkers on the second level, closest to my barracks. I put x2 cores on my Barracks. I just pumped Marines. I did it with Medics several times... could never get it. I'm sure others can, if not, try Marines only. I got just enough gas to give me the 2 upgrades for the Marines.

Other than that, lots of SCVs. Lots of Marines. Go rescue everyone you can. I immobilized my main group of troops after the second group appeared AND that left wave of zerg came. (Right after the call a wave from the left come, so let the bunkers do their thing, then go.) I think cleared the road of any zerg unit producing creep and any crawler up to the initial ramp up to the western zerg base. I held there and kept clearing out what came. Made sure no creep was added.

When the third group came, I pushed up the ramp, targeted the zerg units, then back to crawlers. Back and forth until I was through. Then, I took out the first base the the left. Killed all of the crawlers that remained while also disposing of the Zerg units. After that, just take out the hatcheries and move north to the next base. Rinse and Repeat.

I should say that about half way into my First assault on the western base I sent a group of Marines to reinforce, which was definitely needed if you use this technique. Before hitting the Northern base, I took the small group that was created at my base and moved them into my main Army. (They just held at the road)

Especially at the Northern base, there are a couple crawlers that you can just maneuver your guys around and just hit the hatchery and any Zerg units that come. That makes it fairly easy and less troublesome.

Good Luck!

Yeah, most SC:BW was just that-

1) Turtle with MINIMAL forces
2) Econ hardcore, never stop building workers
3) Expand early as possible whie see 1).
3) Dual upgrades
4) Then make 15-20 gateways/rax/hatcheries, GG

Same applies to Warcrat 3 too. You just gotta have patience and reach critical mass (150-200 food). That's the biggest mistake of beginner RTS players. They send 50 food army 4 times and get them all killed when they could wait til 200 and rape all for the same money.

Same for SC2, OP. If you think you're dying, it's because you simply don't have enough units. If you're racing against time, you find the sweet spot to mass everything and finish it at once.

Well i really don´t see the problem with that achievment. There are only like 2 spinecrawlers 5 hydras and some mutas definding the hatches and you can just streamroll them with about 150 food of marine medic. The attack waves are pretty lame on hard just some lings and hydras. If you have some bunkers and patroling svcs all you need to do is like getting 3 rax and pumping a big bio ball and attack move.

To the people who suggested sacking those outer bunkers, thanks! I finally finished it using that strat. I put 2 reactors on the first two Rax, and got enough gas for both upgrades, then stopped getting gas. Just made a crap ton of 1/1 marines and decimated the SW zerg base with 3 hatches, then killed one of the north hatches for my 4th.

I almost died, from not having enough guys protecting my base, but you don't actually need to beat the mission if you just want this achievement. Thank god, I don't have to use the original portraits anymore.

I found it to be pretty easy, I simply walled off with three bunkers (with marines in) at the right side, a bunker (with marines in..again) and a barracks on the left side, then procceeded to macro up a forced of medic+marine. Keep making SCVs, having 3-4 at each choke really helps out with repairs etc.
Just build up units, then walk right over the south western bases, kall hatcheries but let the drones live. They'll rebuild, kill another hatcery while they're rebuilding.

Man, for the "Hold the Line" achievement, I thought "no salvage" meant no repairing, so I went on deactivating auto-repair on all SCVs, building 6 bunkers at both chokes, tons of towers between them, and keeping 8 marines in front of the bunkers so they absorb damage. What was really a pain is that at some point in the mission, you are given an SCV that automatically goes to repair your bunkers, and I thought I had to catch it before he got there. Twice he did, and I restarted because of that. I'm such a noob. I didn't understand why I kept on failing the mission. Gotta be those towers in the middle being destroyed by the nydus in the cutscene. The last time, I skipped the cutscene, so that may be why I got it.

I struggled with that achieve initially too, but after reading what others did, I realized I was making it much more complicated than need be.

Here's what I ended up doing:

I salvaged my front two bunkers, built another rax, two reactors, one tech lab, a refinery, and pumped SCVs until saturated, all the while pumping rine/medic.

I save the first group in the NE corner pretty shortly after announced. Then around the 10 minute mark I take my M&M ball to the SW base with the 3 hatcheries. Change your rally points to near the base. Do some minor micro (not fighting units and spine crawlers simultaneously while they are uphill, for instance - just pull back and kill the units then run up).

After killing those 3 hatcheries, save the troops right up the ramp. Change your rally points and then proceed further NW to kill the last hatchery

I got this achievement yesterday. I salvaged the innermost bunkers and did a fast bunker push just outside the left base. I had three bunkers at the right choke which easily defends that side with some scvs repairing. Then I slowly pushed until I could bunker right below the ramp of the left base. Then I lured the waves that gathered up on the ramp and got them killed at my bunkers and then rushed up the ramp with a large force of marines.

With one minute left I did an all in push of the top hatchery taking every single unit I had, including scvs and the marines defending my base. I was able to take out the hatchery before my units died. Meanwhile, my base was getting destroyed, but I lifted my CC away and it died literally to mutalisks one second after the countdown expired

Just macro up a giant ball, get the 1/1 upgrades save the people who need help and during the final save around 9 oclock go south. Kill two spine crawlers, rape the 3 hatcheries then back off and turn around again, by that time they have ordered drones to construct new hatcheries.

Destroy one of those, get achievement, go back win game.

As for the hold the line without destroying or salvaging bunkers, make two additional bunkers (one on each side), use marines to soak damage in front of bunkers and have svcs repairing.

TLDR :p

But this is the way I did it.

I salvaged the two top most bunkers. Use the extra mineral to get the economy going and throw down another 3 barracks. You can rescue all the marines if you want. Pump out marines and medics until about 11 minutes left and then push out across the northern bridge. Destroy the two hatcheries in the northern part of the map and then retreat back slightly. The AI will rebuild the hatcheries and in a few minutes attack and destroy them again.

I had about 90 food worth of marines, and 16 food worth of medics. 5 minutes left, I attacked the bottom left base. The one with 3 hatcheries, I pulled my units back and fought the base-defending army w/out the spine crawlers. I brought the units back that were being pummeled by the hydralisks, and I lost about 20 food worht of marines. By the time I killed the 3 hatcheries, it had 2 minutes or so left. At this point, units were pouring out of the nydus, so when heading up to the top left base, I was getting constantly harrassed by zerglings/roaches. By the time I got there, I thought I could quickly snipe the hatchery, but I was wrong. I had probably 50 or so food of marines sniping it, but the mutalisks and the constant stream of units stopped me before I could snipe teh hatchery, I've tried doing this strategy a couple times, each failing in the same way. I've decided I need to attack earlier, so I've tried. The problem is I can't get enough marines to do anything, and the base defenses rape them. (50 food or so of marines) I have 4 barracks, one with the tech, like someone suggested, and I had the upgrades, and its on faster. I just can't do it. D: The other achievement was a cake walk. All you have to do is build 2 extra missle turrets in the front, and 1 on the left side. And have 2 extra bunkers on each side, and about 4 scv's on each side to repair the bunkers. Save it after every wave if you're scared, that way you can load if you're not watching and a couple roaches snipe one of your bunkers.
I love you.

Also worthy of note, if you take the top left expo where there's 2 hatches (also least defended) and leave the drones alive, the drones will remake those hatches. Let them morph into new hatches and kill them immediately. bam, achievement.

I kept trying to break the bottom left expo to no avail b/c I'd wait too long to push out - between the forces already there and the nydus worm it never ended. Tried it like 4 times this way, then tried the method I outlined and got it first try.

omg that was annoying.... took about 15 attempts to do it, kept failing after getting the three lefthand hatches. eventually i got my micro and macro right and had a second force ready to bolster my battered main army when i went in to attack the final hatch.....

As above is salvaged my outside bunkers and fell back. Dropped a third rax with reactor, saturated my mineral line and then pumped marines and medics until i had about 140 foods worth of units total.

Then i struck out and took out all the spine crawlers just outside my base, left a few troops behind to stop any new ones going down and microed upto the three bases... remember to focus down enemies and just ignore the spine crawlers (let your medics do some work lol) once you get the first two hatches down you can take out the crawlers.

While you are doing all that keep pumping marines and medics and set them to rally just outside your base. Meet up with your main force as it leaves where the three hatches were, and go up the choke to the top left base, again focus everything down.... especially the air units (spalsh damage hurts!) and then just take out the base. done
When there is nothing left to lose but your dignity, it is already gone.
