We should have made it being in Qatar the reason not to go, would have saved our face in case we don't make it. Yilmaz and Haaland are going to destroy our back line.

With Qatar it's like, it's bad for literally every possible reason. They have no culture for football. They have no climate for football, and shit has to be moved to the winter to accommodate that. And then 6500 people have DIED?? building stadiums for this event? It's such a staggering number. Honestly FIFA comes off as a really villainous group. A couple Norwegian clubs are pushing for a boycott, but ya, not gonna happen, because as abhorrent as all of it is, it's still the fkn world cup. There's part of me that wants to commit to not watching it this time cause this time, it's just too egregious, but fk, I'm still prolly gonna.

Sport has a unique ability to uplift and inspire, almost everything about the decision to give the World Cup to Qatar pisses all over this. Fuck the travelling fans, fuck the club game, fuck the calendar, fuck the quality of the games. Fuck this. I just find it awful on so many levels. The custodian of the world game making this decision to a state that is pretty egregious in all sorts of areas. Most nations have black marks against them in one way or another don’t get me wrong, but few nations engage in the elite pumping money into international sport to improve their image in the way Qatar or Abu Dhabi do. While largely not actually reforming at home, it’s not like these awards are conditional on such matters. If we were seeing rapid improvements on human rights with the award of the World Cup, then absolutely dragging countries into the global standards would be a net gain for the world but evidence of that is pretty skant. I’m only one football fanatic out of millions, but I can’t in good conscience watch a tournament where workers who’ve had their passports seized only to die working on stadiums and infrastructure is a thing. Unlike say, China getting the Olympics, or Russia getting the World Cup (which has a rich football history to be fair and from all accounts I’ve read was a great place to visit), there’s an additional human suffering solely from getting the World Cup. So rather than it being an incentive to improve, it’s actually causing more people to toil in horrendous conditions.

Again, not defending the idea of Qatar world cup or anything -- it's a shitty place to host a football tournament for sure. But there are plenty of things to dislike about it without resorting to twisting facts and blatant disinformation; that just makes any real criticisms appear less credible.

There are over 2 million migrant workers in Qatar, and the 6500 figure covers all migrant worker deaths in a 10 year period. Like, they're not talking about people dying on construction projects specifically, they're including people getting hit by cars and shit. Now, I'm sure that the awful conditions those people are living and working in are a contributing factor to their deaths, but I'd actually be curious to know, what's the typical death rate for people of those demographics in their home countries. Somehow I doubt that lower class workers in Bangladesh or India have significantly better outcomes on this. On this you are correct, although I have read that that figure is really lowballed, although as you say it’s a figure for deaths across general construction and not solely World Cup projects. On the other hand if you’re filthy rich as a country, with your denizens throwing money at sport across the board, you probably shouldn’t have a situation where migrant workers have their passports held on to and can’t leave the country. Amongst other things. If Qatar had a few trailblazers funnelling money into sport and it was an equitable exchange between prestige and them generally behaving better to various groups of people, even if slowly then that’s one thing, as it is it’s pure PR with nothing but the gloss. And it works too! Granted it’s Abu Dhabi in Manchester City’s case but woe betide anyone criticising their money to regenerate areas of low income Manchester and why they’re doing it. Hey it’s not as if football is clean across the board, and the Olympics sure as fuck aren’t, I think my particular line in the sand (joke vaguely intended) is when sport becomes a PR venture for the emirati

It's the same problem that west has regularly when dealing with rich autocratic countries. Someone like FA would be in dire straits if they took a stance on human rights in China and China decided to pull the plug on premier league tv deals. No chance that happens, is there?

And my favorite bar in winter doesn't show any sport (it's a bit of a higher class establishment) anyway. But will I turn on the TV when I'm at home doing nothing? Probably yes :/

It’s a pretty good pipeline, the raw material’s now there and clubs are happy to take a punt on American talent. I think Pulisic and Reyna are a step up on talent wise from the best of the last generation, so things are moving in a good direction. South America can’t keep hold of its real top talent, who are moving earlier and earlier, indeed the strength of North and South American football are probably trending in opposite directions, I think it’s quite conceivable that MLS will outstrip those leagues in a reasonably short period of time.
