Stolen from r/nba
What NBA fact blows your mind?
- Michael Jordan never lost more than 2 games in a row from November 1990 until he retired from the Bulls (for the second time) in 1998. That’s why he’s the true GOAT
- John Stockton would still be the all-time assist leader even if he didn’t play the last six seasons of his career.
- Kareem Abdul Jabbar almost joined the ABA instead of the NBA but then ABA commissioner George Miken forgot to hand Kareem a cheque for $100,000 up front, killing both their chances at getting him but also effectively killing the ABA.
- That Pistol Pete predicted his own death 14 years prior. http://www.opencourt-basketball.com/pete-maravich-predicted-his-future-in-1974/
- Anything to do with Wilt Chamberlain. One of them was the fact he had 78 points and 43 rebounds in a game. Imagine if that happened today lol.
- Westbrook has the same amount of MVPs & scoring titles as Kobe Bryant
- Maybe not entirely mind blowing, but Grant Hill playing into his 40's after having so much of his best years decimated by injury is pretty damn impressive.
- The Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead.
- The fact that Kareem basically never got a debate for his GOAT case. Pretty much just MJ vs LeBron in here. (Although I believe MJ is the GOAT)

I always said that Kareem is closer to Jordan than #3 is to Kareem...

If we go by stats, Lebron would have won it 10+ seasons already. If Harden remains consistent, he has the "robbed twice" narrative. What would Lebron's be? Playing his best basketball in his 15th season at the age of 33 is just as good or better than any narrative out there Stat vs. stat, LBJ's best is worse that Harden's best. Plus, Harden is a way better ball handler and distributor, a more deadly shooter, and a more versatile scorer. And when you add Harden's "robbed twice" narrative, he edges ahead of LBJ.
I don't disagree Harden's stats are better, but if you're of the theory that MVP is narrative driven then LeBron has a good shot this year because his "4th prime" narrative is one of the dopest narratives of all the narratives

Here's one that took me by surprise: JR Smith is about 7 or so 3's away from passing Kobe on the all-time 3-pt made list

I would pick Kareem first.

A lot of great scorers in the past weren't really great 3-pt shooters. Even today, some of the top scorers like Lebron and Westbrook aren't great at it. They just occasionally had big games because of the volume they took. If I had to guess, I would say that the volume of Kobe's 3-pt attempts vary wildly per game. The bigger surprise in the equation to me is JR Smith since I don't think of him as one of the top shooters in the league. I guess playing a lot of seasons on teams that gave him the green light made up for it.
On the other hand, plenty of 3-pt specialists in the past didn't take many shots. Players such as Steve Kerr didn't take near as many 3-pt shots as some inferior shooters take nowadays.

^Steve Kerr also only averaged 17.8 MPG on his career

congratz to Justin Jacobs. i cite his work quite a bit. a really good analytics guy... less than a week ago i told him it'll be a shame once he gets hired by an NBA team and can't publish any longer. he just got hired by the Orlando Magic as their senior basketball researcher. good move by Jeff Weltman
Jacobs isn't just a math guy... he is a former NCAA basketball player. bad news for his readers.. good news for him. here is his web site. https://squared2020.com/
6 minutes into the game and Casey has OG, Siakam, and Poetl on the floor. Casey has balls. this is the right move i'm just surprised he has the balls to do it. $50+ million in players sits on the bench while $5 million in players plays in the 6th minute of quarter 1.

toronto playing like total crap and OG is like +10. he is a holy terror on defense.
|
It's nice that you encouraged him to be hired JJ. I'm a fan of his articles as well.
|
i just figured he would get hired because of the quality of his published work. This happens every time with the best analytics guys. they publish really cool stuff for a while. it gets gobbled up like free candy. a big hitter like an NBA team or ESPN hires them. then they can't publish any longer.

i'm naming my first son "Fred Van Vleet". undrafted... under 6 feet tall... unselfish... plays the scheme the coach designs every time ...rolling around on the floor to grab loose balls.... draining ice cold 3s...
