ah, she's cute too
I was thinking about n6 and some reserve. The former plays for a Brazilian team.

Edit: gold for China. Lang Ping becomes an ever bigger legend.

Get some context. You're talking about a country which has won 5 world cups and 0 olympic games. I'm 30 years old now. I remember when I was 10 (1996) the commentator said "Brazil has never won a olympic gold medal in football". I was 10. That national team had Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and Bebeto as main players and failed. It lost to Nigeria 3-4 after being up 3-1. Jump 4 years forward. 2000. I was 14. Our main players were Ronaldinho (yea that one from Barcelona) and Alex (de Souza, mostly known from Galatasaray, although he's had a great career in Brazil and was considered a rising star back then). In 2004 I was 18. It was supposedly one of the best sub-23 teams ever in Brazil with Robinho and Diego (Porto, Atletic Madrid, Werder Bremen etc) as leaders. iirc it didn't even qualify for the Olympics. 2008. I was 22. Ronaldinho (again), Pato, Robinho, Thiago Silva... fail. 2012, I was 26. Neymar and Ganso. Fail. In 2016 we've finally won it. Before watching all these failures I heard about 1988 when Brazil lost to URSS in spite of having Taffarel, Romario and Bebeto.

So, yeah, it doesn't mean a lot to other nations. But any Brazilian who likes football has basically grown up hearing all the stories of how our best players failed to win olympic gold and now we finally have won it.

Man u got to feel for Lee Chong Wei, finally beat his greatest rival Lin Dan but proceeds to lose in the finals again for his 3rd straight Olympic silver. Think he might be the yellow of the Olympic games. And Malaysia really unlucky to lose all 3 of their badminton finals. Still no gold for them yet, got to wait till the next games i guess!

German football team can be happy to get silver. They pretty much were some kind of random team that practised for like one week prior to the tournament, coming out of pre season preparations.

Officially the first country in history to improve on a host games performance. Hoping to buck the trend and improve once again in Tokyo. Will be interesting to see how many countries copy our funding model and if it works for them.

Doesn't this more likely say that your athletes did not prepare for 2012 enough?

Unfortunately for that narrative we have golds in more sports than any other country. 6 in cycling compared to the US with 16 in swimming. Go and bully them instead!

How many additional medals did you get in track & field compared to 2012?

Swimming man... imagine if athletics had different, asinine, slower and less efficient ways of getting to the finish line and people got medals for it:

- 100m backwards sprint
- 200m hopping
- 400m skipping
- 50m running on your hands

I mean, I was a champion in breaststroke in elementary school so I'm kind of biased towards it but its still way slower than freestyle.

We got half as many golds in athletics this time around (from 4 to 2) with one more in total (from 6 to 7). I'm guessing you want to point to Russia being disqualified, but they're really not direct competition for many of our medals. Genuinely, this is not a freak result but rather the result of continued investment (including what is essentially crowdfunding) and development of a strong sports infrastructure.

Definitely a valid observation, which is why it isn't a surprise that swimming has a lot of the most "decorated" Olympians. They are favored in the numbers game in that sense.
History will sooner or later sweep the European Union away without mercy.

It's a very good funding method because many athletes are then professionnals in a field where almost none of the competition are. At the same time, nobody speaks of the drawbacks of this system so I wonder what they are.

The drawbacks are that instead of promoting 'grassroots' sports organizations, this model gives the finger to just about anyone who isn't in direct contention for Olympic medals right here and now. It's pretty much against the original spirit of the Olympic Games and in long term it can backfire quite heavily because the sports that aren't performing well currently aren't likely to have any big breakthroughs while the sports that are currently flourishing due to good funding aren't guaranteed to keep producing stars as years go on since funding is an important but not the only factor.

That said, very impressive result by the UK this year regardless.
