Don´t they do any sports themselfes ? Did they watch any Olympics before ? No, we don't do sports and never watched any olympic game before, too busy fighting off monkeys in the forest while dodging muggers. It's mostly herd behavior, some start it and it propagates. They believe its how they can help their team, "the 12th player". Football, volleyball, handball and so on players should be able to handle this kind of situation fairly well. I'm not defending senseless booing. It's very disrespectful to boo in sports like archery, golf, shooting, tennis and that horse jumping obstacles thing (equestrian?). But whatever, I`m done with this subject. Serbia vs China volleyball gold match is about to start.

And at least for the 400m the current runners are not very close, either. I guess doping was on another level back then?

Damn, they could not do it, Botswana beating the US would have been amazing.

I guess doping was on another level back then? That's a popular theory. There's a lot of East German and Soviet records that stood for a long time among some others Woohoo the men didn't get DQed for something in a relay!

But considering the fuzz the world and this thread is making about it (its fair), i am 100% sure that its not as offensive around here. Booing is not necessarily used to offend, it can be a way to "sway" the judges if there is some sort of voting involved and you think the other guy should win, or simply showing support to the one side by hoping the other screws up. Like in a penalty shootout when you hope the guy misses the shot or that the goalkeeper won't reach the ball. Around here, people will boo. Again, i also think it sucks, both for the meaning it takes elsewhere and for the attitude, but loud people are loud. You can actually hear the brazilian crowd applauding and booing at the same time. I think its a shame, i would welcome a rival with as much respect as possible. edit: One interesting example is Argentina, they will always be booed because they are our rivals, even when there is no actual rivalry in the specific sport. But we don't have anything against them and if they are matched against us people will most likely be thrilled about it.
