At least for men's. AFAIK countries are only allowed to field 3 players above the age of 23 in mens soccer. Don't ask me why, though.

What's the better way to rank countries, by number of golds or by number of total medals?

Number of medals is more representative of which countries are big and have big olympic teams. Golds are more representative of how well a country did.
Hence number of medals are more consistent olympics to olympics, but golds vary more.

I think it's the same as in Tennis or Basketball, where people don't care that much when you're not playing for any money. Plenty of players think olympics is corrupt, and giving the system what they want, when really you might not care that much about country pride and exposing yourself to Zika (which a few Tennis players who withdrew cited, included the best Canadian tennis player), is not worth it.

At least for men's. I think it's the same as in Tennis or Basketball, where people don't care that much when you're not playing for any money. It's a combination of several aspects: -Only three players ages 23+ alowed per team. -Olympics taking place in the middle of season preparation. -Clubs can veto (at least the over 23 players) players from being selected afaik, which is not the case for the world cup/EURO,. I'm not 100% this is the main reason, but I think it is because FIFA doesnt need the olympics (unlike any other sport) and so does not have much interest in helping a potential rival to the world cup. -Here in germany, we had a discussion if the german team qualifying would further take away the spotlight other sports deserve, but rarely get because ootball dominating all other sports outise of the few days of the olympics. Selecting some superstars might have provoked some backslash.

Fiji's rugby team is ridiculous. Their monsters were just running Brazilians over a few times

I don't think Road Cycling, Golf, Soccer, Rugby, Basketball, or Tennis need the Olympics.
I don't know much about soccer, I was more talking about the events I'm more familiar with (cycling and tennis). Your reasons make sense, and yeah, I dunno about the last reason, but I do think it's a bit silly watching the Olympics for Basketball or Football/Soccer. The teams are all wonky, play is lower level, people care less about it, idk.
For me the, the heart of the Olympics has always been Athletics, Gymnastics, and Swimming... Then there's the other sports that need to be there because hey, they're sports, and then those sports that nobody really cares about at all, but they're nice watch once every 4 years for an hour. Those are the sports where the athletes end up working at McDonalds 15 years after winning a Bronze medal (I personally know two in a similar situation).

Also players are already burned out playing one international tournament in the summer after the regular season, which generally a bunch of them will (the European Championship is on the same 4-year schedule as the Summer Olympics) it's just not really feasible in this age to play another. And soccer is way too big for its top tier tournament to be an event among multitudes, hosting a World Cup is basically as big an undertaking as hosting an entire Olympics.

As a long time follower of Tour de France, I have absolutely no doubts on what makes Phelps such a swimming monster. The Lance Armstrong of the Swim! He reminds way more Indurain who never have been caught but I wanted a strong example who shared the same nationality. And I am not even happy of his coming retreat as another creature of the American federation will succeed him. But hey, let's booed Efimova, that's way funnier!

Just came back from Germany x Canada female soccer match.
I know little to nothing about female soccer, but schland sure disappointed me, while Canada surprised me. The overall feeling I had is that Germany team is better technically, seemed to have the most ball possession, but Canada held strong and scored well. In the end, I believe it was a fair result.
But sincerely, Brazil is way above these two, I expect nothing less than a gold medal.
About male soccer, Brazil sucks so bad I feel ashamed when the players enter the field.

I do not have the slightest clue about womens soccer, but according to german TV, both Canada and Germany fielded a B-Team for that match, since they would advance anyway. Might be only their reason for losing, though.

We got 4 x 4th place already, so that's that
we dont have any serious sport support.
First you lack facilities except for 20 football fields in every small town, then you lack organisation and recruiting like US does in highschool and then you have to balance pro sports with your career since pro sports isnt a career for most sports.
So dont excpect any serious competing except for the few talents that get though the system.

Classy crowd at tennis doubles, cheering 1st serve misses, booing break chances against the BR team

Dang Hope Solo just had an epicly terrible game to draw Colombia. US still wins the group though so it's basically just a warning.
Blunder 1 Blunder 2
For how big an upset the draw was, the combined goal difference between the teams in the last 5 games was US 18-0.

Just heard Serena lost to Svitolina, huge upset after Djokovic losing 1st round in men's tourney

I think I'd cheer for Phelps even against a Brazilian...

A spiritual repeat of his 2008 victory in the 100 fly - probably 2nd at 199m, clenches the gold with a quick do-or-die stroke. You can tell Phelps is getting old though, the last 50 left a lot to be desired. Still, 20 golds...
