Watching indoors is quite compelling. I get the basics of the tactics and there is tremendous athleticism and skill consistently on display. Beach seems less compelling to me. With less people it seems to go much faster, with just an exchange or two before a point is scored, and defense seems difficult with such a large area to cover. It often seems like whoever gets first spike off pretty much gets the point, barring misplacing it or an error.
beachvolleyball to volleyball is like snowboarding to traditional ski. Trendy sport gone olympics.
also to the other guy, the athletes have an insane amount of technique in swimming, i greatly enjoy watching it. I think its harder for non swimmers to watch as they just see a million water races. But also i do agree the world swimming org has problems handling doping, i really dont like seeing known cheaters win medals.

That might have been the case when it started but nowadays I really enjoy beachvolleyball way more. They have different rulesets, the field is smaller 2 x 8m x 8m (normal: 2 x 9m x 9m) and it's way for taxing. Not only because less ppl but moving/running on sand. It's less about tactics and studied attacks and more about athletic in general
Last but not least it's incredible fun to jump to a ball and land in the sand :D

The suction-bruise thing reminds me of when MLB players making tens of millions of dollars every year thought nylon "phi-ten" necklaces were making them perform better. And hey, if you have a psychological confidence from wearing one then go right on ahead, but appeals like "they play a sport therefore they know better than science" seems odd.

Yea Gatlin is a pretty big black mark. The fact that you don't get lifetime ban for first offense isnt great in my book...but the fact that you can get two 4 year suspensions and still be allowed to compete....smh

France is quietly having his worst international event in judo I've ever seen. France is usually the second best nation (behind Japan) but right now I don't see us getting more than 4 medals. Gneto, Pavia, and today Piétri. All previous world medals holders crashed and burned like crazy. I'm also surprised by the lacking performance of Brazil in these Olympics. I would have expected to put a lot of money on Judo as they had good performances at London.
In rowing however, we may have a historic performance with NZL and GB being very average (despite being professionals) while Italy is over-performing !!!
Meanwhile a Libanian just got disqualified (severely) and didn't want to leave the tatami. LOL !

Our 4s men are gonna walk it, our 8s look in contention to match favorites Germany our Women 2s have not been beaten in 38 races! So im quite hopeful in that I'll be VERY surprised if GB match London's total of 9 medals with 4 titles. I'm saying that compared to the money poured into rowing, they are not impressing me the way they did in 2012.

Meanwhile Germany ..... zero medals.... ZERO! What the hell? We are supposed to be in the Top 5!
We got 4 x 4th place already, so that's that

I would be surprised if we matched all 9 but no reason we can't get 5 plus i think :D

Edit : No team medal in Eventing for Germany. Edit: Or not, because Mark Todd just screwed up and had 16 penalties.
FIRST MEDAL FOR GERMANY !!!! GO GO EUROPEAN BROTHER !!!!
BUT FRANCE JUST GOT THE GOLD IN EVENTING !!!!!!

We got 4 x 4th place already, so that's that "Supposed" in which sense? Realisitically, USA, Russia, China, and to a lesser the UK (benefitting from heavy investments due to London 2012) should finish ahead of us no matter what, and Brazil is a host nation with a massive potential. Also from what I understand, other nations like Japan, South Korea, Australia seen to invest heavily into olympic sports, in particular such which have the potential to yield several gold medals. I'd argue that if we were to finish ahead of all of them, that would consitute an overall successful olympics. Also, if you look at the schedule, was there any event before today were a german was really among the favorites to win? Maybe Biedermann, but otherwise?

Just from a historcial point of view i can see, why there is a certain expectation (I don't neccesarily agree with that, because I have no clue about a lot od diciplines). Since the reunification, germany has been 3rd twice, 5th twice and 6th twice. I am am not sure, how far that can be taken as a measure today; 3rd is certainly out of the discussion, but having a place in the middle of the top 10 (5-7) would be quite nice.
I agree with you, that the golden hopes are mostly later though (Mens handball and field hockey teams are well on their way too later stages, some rowing medals will probably come in as well), not much lost yet. ARD&ZDF are just making a huge drama out of every elimination.

An MLB player got suspended 160 games for PEDs the other year because of a substance that entered his system by using a children's cold & flu medicine. And those guys have much more money at risk than Olympians do.
First strike bans seem right based on the IOC's pompous "Olympic Ideal" nonsense, but in reality the science just isn't that precise.

I understand that the World Cup means more for soccer in terms of countries fielding their absolute best, and more players are apparently committed to playing in it, but why is it the soccer in Olympics are kind of just "Nah I'll pass".
At least for men's.
