I felt so much karmic satisfaction in the second kick that missed. It's only right to whiff it after the momentum leading to that moment smacked of illegitimacy.
And holy cow that fullback ^.^

A german wide reciever was drafted, which was a big deal, but got cut. I believe he is out of the league. A Norwegian kicker played preseason games some years ago, but also did not make the 53-man roster.

Also other Germans in the NFL: Sebastian Vollmer - OT, New England Patriots Marc Nzechoa - LB, Dallas Cowboys (injurylisted right now) Markus Kuhn - DT, New York Giants Kasim Edebali - LB, New Orleans Saints Björn Werner - LB, Indianapolis Colts

I'm really starting to think the NFL brass is trying to "discourage" mobile QBs. How else could those helmet hits be ignored by referees?
|
In real time most of those were probably very difficult to see as helmet to helmet. I remember watching the game and really only thinking one was helmet to helmet. The rest looked like good, clean, hard hits.

Hopefully they continue this trend because it does make the league more interesting.

its a lot harder to make a call when you are on the move. standing motionless the way baseball umpires do for 95% of their calls gives an official a much better chance at an accurate call.
perhaps once a set offensive play is broken and guys are running in every direction the officials are on the move as well making even harder to get a call right.
i like mobile QBs in the NFL and i hope they remain and the NFL finds a way to make the correct calls on these helmet-to-helmet hits.

QBs like Lulay or Burris or Jeremiah Masoli can do it all athletically and are often the best athlete on the field. there's only 9 teams in the league so that's 3 right there. Burris has 5,500 career rushing yards and throws on the run all the time. How many CFL running backs have 6,000 career rushing yards? Masoli had almost as many rushing TDs and passing TDs during college and in the CFL he is always throwing on the run.

The head to head hits they should really be watching out for are the ones where one player hits another with the crown of his helmet. One of the hits on Newton was facemask to facemask, which I don't think should be a penalty. That's the sort of accidental hit that they should just let go.

based on some post, yet no single player from europe became/is a "world star" by playing NFL?! Same happened in NBA until ~2000 who a nonamerican player (finally) became a world class player. Nowitzki is one of the first people.

Other than the kid at Dortmund (who is still a baby) can you think of any stars?

Broncos being dirty as fuck, no one outside of denver is suprised.

Without a euro league anymore there's not enough money or endorsement opportunity to make Europeans choose it as a primary sport. Could make plenty of money and have more opportunity for other sports

The NFL is not popular outside of the US. Basketball has a decent following in many European countries, especially in Eastern Europe. I think it is the second most popular sport in the world right now. Before Nowitzki, the NBA had players like Petrovic, Kukoc and Divac.

Hockey has a lot more foriegn players but I wouldn't say that its more popular then basketball. China is really trying to make it a thing for their new generation of people but they and the rest of the world just can't come close to the american college basketball into pro basketball pipeline.

I don't think that last hit on Newton (by Stewart, which got flagged) was that bad. I'm not sure how Stewart is supposed to tackle Newton in that situation. Stewart has to make the tackle quickly because Newton wants to throw the ball, and Stewart is smaller than Newton so trying to wrap up Newton wouldn't be very smart. I think Stewart tries to hit Newton with his left shoulder, but it is hard to get your head completely out of the way when making a tackle. The bigger problem is that Newton does nothing to protect himself from the hit which he knows is coming.
I like mobile QBs but sometimes I think they should just take the sack. QBs should get protection from officials but some QBs need to do a better job of protecting themselves too.
