Still, getting beaten by penalties is annoying. I think the only thing you can do is give props to Gladbach. Gladbach is a minnow compared to City; MUCH less money, got picked apart during the summer transfer window, recently lost their manager during the season, and they don't have the European experience that almost any other club does. The Wolfsburg loss is more disappointing, but Wolfsburg also should be a clearly worse team than Man U. They lost De Bruyne (without properly replacing him) and, of course, don't have anywhere near the amount of resources that Man U does. I think the games are still a big indictment of the Manchester clubs' quality. Gladbach is a bad club sitting near the bottom of the German table and Wolfsburg is maybe the 4th or 5th best club in Germany this season, so the fact that they out-played the Manchester clubs for large portions of these games should be worrisome for them. That said, it is the beginning of the year and the group stage, so there's a lot of room for growth for both of those clubs.

Anyway, Wolfsburg is a good team, beating them 2-1 home on an average day is something every team should be 'satisfied' with. And City won a champions league match on away field - that's something every team is satisfied with as well. Barcelona struggled more with Leverkusen yesterday - though I guess that might be an indictment of how they will do without messi. ![]() It's certainly too early to reconsider them as part of the very top clubs. From what I've seen, there's still a clear 1-3 BBR, then 4 PSG, then Juventus and some Spanish English German teams fight over 5-10. Honestly past 6 months is probably the only period of the past 10 (15?) years where you can argue that no English team is a top 5 side, and they're gonna have to actually do something impressive to change that.

Still, a frustrating round from a Bundesliga perspective, 3 close matches against the financial giants of world football, and all of them lost 1-2 after a good start. Of course, Bundesliga's own financial giant is once again crushing any opposition, but that's hardly any consolation ![]()

If they can produce enough strong players and the odd star that doesnt get picked off (unlikely) I think they will steadily improve in the next few CL cycles. They lack consistency which is just an experience thing imo.

With douchebag Jesus gone, this team is extremely likeable. Atletico put a ton of pressure but they were not able to score more than once due to a great defensive cohesion from Benfica.

After all, we're in the pot1 of the draw. Great defensive cohesion from Benfica yesterday, and a lot of heart!
