ALSO, in terms of a neutral it is also "not the most entertaining" way to play. It is entertaining of course, when the team is playing to 100% and passing around for fun producing many attempts on goal etc. Well you can never be 100% safe but naturally the less time a team has the ball the less likely they are to score. Thats kinda like.. you know.. math.

They could have at least try to purchase Otamendi or another central defence. I genuinely think United's defense is the best in the league by a fair margin. They play a high line and concede very little. Smalling is looking absolute world class, their fullback duo looks the best in the league imo. Scheiderlin/Schweinsteiger is great at shielding the defense. Blind is the odd one out, but doing really well in his ballplaying role, apart from the unfortunate game against Swansea. Their problem is attacking impotence. Memphis is really immature as a player, too wasteful, bad decision making but really the only player to take any risks apart from Herrera. Mata just gets muscled off the ball what seems like 15 times a game, Rooney has had some really poor games and Van Gaal hasn't really figured out who to put in the 10 role. Fellaini is the biggest goal threat even as a sub, and that is pretty bad. But if they click some time soon they can still win the league. Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool not looking good either. Man City looks scary as hell though.

It just seems that most of the buys this summer made LVG's job harder then easier which doesn't make any sense.

wow. I don't know why but I've always had this image of rooney as a 6 foot 2 guy who can overpower people.

It's funny because in a way, it's the most offensively minded football imaginable (every single pass had to be in the direction of the opponent's goals- attacks would happen immediately after possession was gained), but in reality it ended up resulting in very defensive games because the other team did not disregard possession and thus would just have the ball 50 meters from Norway's goal while Norway had 10 players behind. ;p I also think that skill level (especially passing) has improved to such a degree that the basis of the philosophy (better to have opponents with possession near their own 16 meter than for you to have possession at your own 16 meter) probably no longer holds true, but I do think overall possession on its own is a pretty meaningless statistic.. And last, I think the 'stylistic' problem, in that fans of possession based football find the other boring and vice versa, is something that only occurs when the two styles clash. If you have two possession based teams, they will both keep pressing for the ball, which keeps up the pace. Two that want to keep the ball in the other half will constantly be attacking, just failing a huge percentage of the time. But when they clash, you get this, possession based team looks for opportunities to attack, but those aren't really there all that often because the other team is so clamped down on defense, so they just end up passing the ball around for a couple minutes. But then the defensive team also doesn't have any real stretch on the field and long balls thus just result in the loss of possession because there aren't enough players around to assist the target man, so we go back to possession based team having the ball. ;p
