I'm not even sure what this discussion is about. The T-Wolves's performance is not going to determine the Cavs's performance.

No one ever has. Look at early Jordan or Garnett and you'll laugh at how ridiculous the notion is and why you shouldn't take writers who back that claim seriously. yep, even Allen Iverson said during his infamous interview "how the hell am I ganna make my teammates better by practicing!"

Haha that's the article that the people in the Reddit thread about if Love is overrated absolutely destroyed. Not only is all of the data cherrypicked, it's cherrypicked incorrectly.

Jordan's first year: finished 38-44 and lost in 1st round of playoffs, had a completely dumpy supporting cast (here) Jordan's 2nd year he was injured didn't play much Jordan's 3rd year: finished 40-42, got swept by Boston in 1st round, Jordan's supporting cast is beginning to develop. Chicago has Paxson and Charles Oakley now (here) Jordan's 4th year: finished with 50 wins, lost to Detroit in 2nd round. Jordan's supporting cast is here, Pippen, Grant, Oakley, Paxson, but they're all super young (here) Jordan's 5th year: finished 47-35, lost to Detroit again in east finals this time. (here) Jordan's 6th year: finished with 55 wins, lost to Detroit in the east finals, taking them to 7 games. Phil Jackson starts coaching. (here) Took until Jordan's 4th year for the Bulls to put his supporting cast around him, and it took that nucleus 3 years to develop into a champion.

Pierce can't replicate Ariza, and Webster will probably miss a month of the season, but his injury isn't one that will really put him back in terms of skill so it's likely when he starts playing he'll produce similarly. The Wizards got a lot deeper: Blair and Humphries are solid additions. Gortat is still in his prime and is a good starter, Nene is still good but may miss 20-30 games due to injury (but again they've got a lot of frontcourt depth so it won't be as much of an issue). Then you look at Wall and Beal getting a lot better than they were last year. If Otto Porter and Glen Rice Jr. make an impact, this team could pretty easily snag the 3 seed in the East. I don't think Toronto got much better and neither did Atlanta sans Hortford coming back from injury. The Hornets improved dramatically. I think Bulls/Cavs will be 1st and 2nd, and vying for the 3rd seed in my opinion will be Wizards/Heat/Hornets, then Atlanta/Toronto can go anywhere from 4-7 along with whichever of the previous 3 doesn't get 3rd seed. 8th seed is likely a tossup between a bunch of teams. Milwaukee, Knicks, Pacers, Nets. I think Milwaukee will be decent, I mean they were projected to make the playoffs last year and they added Jabari.

Bottom line is that I don't think there was much of a gap between TOR and WAS at the end of last season, so it wouldn't take much for one to finish ahead of the other this coming season. I'd reserve "almost impossible" for statements like the Lakers making the playoffs or PHI finishing above .500 (or even less...).

Again, we're not talking about teams that have a substantial gap in talent. This isn't like comparing SA/OKC/LAC to SAC/LAL/MIN or CHI/CLE to MIL/PHI/BOS. The difference in win totals between TOR and WAS was only 4 games. ATL (albeit without Horford for most of the season) finished 6 games behind WAS.

When 538 was about to start, Nate Silver (or maybe it was somebody else) displayed a graph that showed that the average journalism major is above average in the verbal portion of the SAT but below average in the math portion. Old school journalists chose their profession because they were terrible at math in school. Can't really help them.
