The conspiracy theory would be that Goodell's best buddy in the world is Robert Kraft and he did his best to cover for him. The reality is that the league probably said 'hey we don't know how those balls got deflated after inspection but don't do it again,' and now that it's happened again, and very publicly, they're being forced into action. Probably very much like spygate.

Well I think Mike Tomlins was more of a moments stupidity but obviously really fucking stupid and not at all excusable - I would completely agree with a suspension. This, provided that what is currently being reported is the truth, suggests not only premeditation but also that it has been an ongoing thing leading to the biggest question: 1) How long has it been going on? 2) Is this the only way they have tried to get an illegal edge? The thing is, between spygate (no matter how little impact you assign it) and now this it shows a very rotten culture which will be hard to cleanse if BB remains.

The NFL would be nuts if they didn't just handle the balls (heh) after this What Belichek does in trying exploit the rulebook is kind of like what Roger Neilson did in hockey. didn't he basically do that few years ago in that 18-1 season or something

I just like the team. I've liked them since I was in third grade when I didn't understand football, and I didn't change my allegiance when I started to understand it. I'm kind of a casual ND fan, to be honest, as I'm not the biggest fan of college ball anyway.

Yeah, we'll see. I haven't been as hardcore about football the past couple of years. The rule changes have affected my feelings pretty heavily, and this weird disciplinary stuff they're doing just irritates me... I don't play fantasy anymore, so that takes away a lot of it, and I'm generally really busy with school and work. But we will see how it goes next season. My friend and I are talking about starting a sports page of our own, including a podcast. The idea being that it'll be two reasonably educated fans having sports bar/barbershop sports conversations. We think we're pretty funny guys, and when we start ranting, it can be really funny. If we bring some intelligence to that conversation as well, then I think we'd have a somewhat unique style for sports talk. I don't know where that'll go, but I'll probably be more involved with watching sports next year. The opposite of that is why I kind of like the Fox hire for Chicago. In my opinion, you need three major items from a head coach: 1) Motivate players, 2) hold players accountable, 3) build a great coaching staff. Items one and two are obvious, but I define item three as being able to adapt your scheme to your players. I strongly dislike when teams try to force players into a scheme. It usually ends with them being terrible teams. The ability to adapt to their players is why the Patriots have had so much success for the last 15 years. They're constantly changing what they do based on the talent that's on the team. I saw the same thing out of Fox in Denver. He went from Orton to Teblow mid-season, and they maximized Teblow's skill set. Then Peyton came in, and they changed everything again. I was really impressed with that ability. I think that in his first year there, they ran a bit of a hybrid D (base 4-3 with some 3-4 mixed in at times because that's what they drafted for in the two years prior). And that Fox immediately hired a guy that's known for a 3-4 D tells me that he's willing to be as adaptable on defense (his strong suit) as he is on offense. So I'm excited for that. I'm not excited to see him down the ball in the fourth with a minute and two timeouts left, though. But there are a lot of positive aspects to his coaching style for which Bears fans should be excited. This guy in SF seems like the opposite of that from what I've seen of him. And it's always a problem for me when a person is a bad public speaker. If he's nervous in front of cameras and people that don't matter, how can he handle the pressure of telling a guy that his play sucks, or that his attitude is shit and it's hurting the team? How can he he deliver impactful messages to a 2-4 team and turn the season around? How does he build and develop trust if he can't clearly articulate his message? His lack of ability in a press conference is pretty telling, in my opinion. And he's not pulling a Bellicheck and basically telling the beat writers to fuck themselves with every shitty answer he gives, he just couldn't answer questions well.

Maybe it's helping them not fumble the ball (this was brought up on the radio. The Vikings who were caught warming the footballs up, and the Patriots who were caught deflating the balls, fumbled the least of any teams in the league), or maybe their guys don't dangle the ball out to get it punched out as often. Most of the fumbles I see occur are because of poor ball security. The runner is flailing around like an idiot, or he's got the ball down near his hip instead of up at his chest where it belongs. And Belicheck doesn't put up with guys fucking up, so if they're out there fumbling a bunch of times, they're not playing anymore. It's fucking dumb and people should get over it. I know there has to be some sort of penalty here, but it's really not that serious. Maybe like a 3rd round pick over this to show that cheating, regardless of how minor the infraction, won't be tolerated. I agree with the one guy saying it's the intent to cheat that's really the problem here. But to the guy who said something about another Super Bowl with an asterisk (might have been the same guy), are you serious? Firstly, it's not that big of a deal. Secondly, "enjoy your fourth Super Bowl" is a ridiculous thing to say when they still need to beat one of the best teams we've seen in the last 15 years. And keep in mind that this is coming from a guy that wants that team to never win another game.

Which just makes the whole thing even dumber. The weather wasn't cold enough for it to really matter in that game and I've heard a couple QB's on sports shows saying it's primarily a mental thing for QB's and doesn't provide a real advantage. So why the fuck did someone do it? Brady would be the one I'd think was guilty of saying something to someone not BB, simply to make himself more comfortable. Rodgers disagrees with that sentiment. If you've ever thrown a football that's highly inflated and then thrown a slightly deflated ball, you'll feel the difference. And it's silly to think that the same difference isn't felt at a higher level. I'm certainly not claiming to be a good QB, but a slightly deflated ball makes a massive difference for my accuracy because I can grip it so much better. And I don't think there's any reason to think that'd change because they're pros. That said, I stand by my statements that I don't think it heavily impacts Brady at all. The guy is a fucking stud, and I don't think a couple PSI would make such a huge impact on him. And with all of that said, I think the NFL needs to hang onto the footballs once the team hands them over. Let them scuff them up and do whatever they want to do prior to the official check in, and then have league appointed ball boys in the game. Subtract the ball boys' salary from each team in order for the league to pay for it. There is a very simple solution to this problem.
