Here's the program components of the top 3 in the women's figure skating free skate + Show Spoiler [component points] + So, all the figure skating experts who thinks that Sotnikova didn't win fair and square, please tell us where Sotnikova was overmarked!

Choreography, Interpretation, Transitions - it's a joke, Costner und Yuna were so smooth, fit all their movements to their music and Sotnikova just filled her program with difficult moves which is fair and fine (and she also got deserving points for that) but it was not on the same aesthetic level as the other two

LOL. And for all the figure skating experts who thinks that Sotnikova DID win fair and square, please tell us where Sotnikova WASN'T overmarked!
Can't just have one side do all the hard work if you're trying to have a real debate, if there ever can be one!

Anyone in Korea or can read Korean? Wanna know how badly Nate and Naver are blowing up over the figure skating mess. God I hope netizenbuzz starts translating these articles quickly, because it seems like S. Korea is going to war with Russia over this.

Its nice to see that the highest trending is 연아야 고마워 - Thank You Yuna. Other than that obviously everyone is saying that it yuna should have won and comments about corruption/worst olympics/so sad for Yuna T_T etc. and they are a lot of articles about foreign reactions for example katarina witts statement on german television( just saying kim yuna should have won)

It's subjective. You guys shouldn't really put too much value in the end result, if you felt Yuna is better does it really matter that she won silver? It seems to me that all three girls were really close in terms of skill and whoever smiled the most towards the judges won. Besides none of you can say that you are neutrals either considering the amount of Yuna adoration around here

Julia might as well retire now... cause she ain't winning gold in Pyongchang... No fricking way.... I'll be damned if she does.... Karma should always be a b*tch....

Seriously, it's over. Finished. I LOVE Yuna, but she has the silver, Russia has the gold. Not worth arguing about.
For what it's worth, Yuna is a bona fide class act. She's donated competition prize money and huge sums of her own money to relief efforts, including the typhoon in the Philippines. Despite her fame, she remains humble and forward-looking. She's beautiful and intelligent and I look forward to seeing what greater beauty she creates in the world around her in the coming years. Really, her best years are still ahead of her.

Well, according to the german TV she has announced her retirement before Pyeongchang today after the competition, as she does not want to face the pressure of running in Korea...

I'd be very surprised if the Russian figure skating team medals in 2018.
IMO, the person who lost the most is Yulia. She'll probably be in her prime then...

Oh man I couldn't wait to get home to see what Hawk posted after that, lol.
Didn't disappoint.
I just hope tomorrow's game is as close, far more worried about that game.

Yeah, I was referring to her life outside the rink.

^ Apparently, she had more "difficult" jumps than Yuna... Hence, the fatigue and alas the execution on that jump... Mao, by far, had the most technically difficult free skate program, and yet she couldn't score higher than her....

Can't just have one side do all the hard work if you're trying to have a real debate, if there ever can be one! The judges of this event have stated their opinion, and then a bunch of ppl here claims that something is wrong with the scores. If you guys are so sure that something is wrong, then it should be easy for you to point out all the mistakes the judges did in detail. Saying things like, Kim Yuna was more artistic, or she had better choreography just doesn't cut it. That's just subjective bullshit that doesn't hold any legitimacy, unless it's a opinion that is hold by most (ie not 1 or 2) experts, and with that I mean real experts.
I would never attempt to defend the scores, simply because I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a proper judgement.
This was going to be a huge controversy no matter what. That is unavoidable in a sport where the rules and the ratings aren't perfectly clear cut. Kim Yuna absolutely crushed her opponents last year in the World Championship, but the competition then and today is like night and day. That's something that I don't think most ppl realize. Kim Yuna didn't lose the gold today, she won the silver. That's how fierce the competition was. If Kostner had won, ppl would have complained too, maybe not to the same extent, because she's not as easy target as this russian girl. It would have happened though, it always does.

Remember Vancouver? Plushenko vs Lysacek? The same shit - just reversed. You have more difficulty jumps? Well, sucks that you don't win.
The real annoying thing is the inconsistency. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadruple_jump_controversy

Can you guys decide if it was the technical elements or components that was overmarked?

Except the execution from Mao from was greater than that of the russian's with a more difficult program.... Your argument doesn't work here cause lysacek had the lesser program but greater GOE, and the reverse for Plush.... And why the hell are you bringing up quads vs. tiple triples... The scoring implications in that are far greater and nothing in the ladies program even compares.... Maybe Triple axel combo vs. all the other triples combinations...
|
Sotnikova received negative GOE on that jump in the gif, so that alone isn't the determining factor. What she had over Yuna was her seven triples vs Yuna's six. All Yuna needed was a 3-Loop, which has a base value of 5.10 (or 5.61 after half-way point). Unfortunately, Yuna doesn't attempt 3L anymore because of her injuries.
Admittedly, at a choreography stand point, Adios Nonino felt a bit lacking. (damnit David Wilson). Nowhere near her last 2 free skates. But then again, there's nothing great about the choreography of Rondo either. Just compare the PCS of the top 5 girls, it's quite obvious what's going on. I could even concede the standing, but not the point differential. Sotnikova's free skate marks was a droplet away from breaking Kim's world record from Vancouver!
I would still put Asada first in the Free Skate, but unfortunately she wasn't in the final group, thus getting low-balled on the PCS. And perhaps stingy GOE marks as well.
